February 2024
King's Kickstart
This month is significant because it is not only a leap year, American Heart Health Month, and Black History Month, but also a month full of love, friendships, and appreciation. I want to start by congratulating our Campus Teacher of the Year, Tashala Thompkins, and our Campus Teacher of Promise, Coach Tyler Darland! Your dedication to our students is essential and I am grateful to have you both as part of the Cougar family. Another huge shout-out to our wonderful counseling team for having a successful Course Selection night this past week. We honor them by celebrating National School Counseling Week! Thank you Mr. Harter, Ms. Durham, Mx. Castillo, Ms. Lamm, Ms. Black, Ms. Arias, Ms. Michelle Snyder and Ms. Janice Snyder for supporting our student's dreams in high school and beyond! I'm pleased to work with a team that works diligently to provide the best learning environment. Crockett and AISD will celebrate our School Resource Officers, Officers Guilbe and Guijarro, February 12-16 and our Food Service Staff February 26-March 1. Thank you all for your service to our community!
If you would like to recognize a valuable Crockett staff member submit a RAVE or nominate a Crockett Staff Member for a Salute Award by February 9th!
Our students continue to make history here at Crockett by making into regionals in wrestling and swim. Orchestra and guitar students received superior ratings in their categories! The Business Professionals of America students earned a place at BPA’s STATE Leadership. Crockett Musicians performed in our gym along with the Austin Symphony. Our Seniors continue to receive those exciting college acceptance letters!
As we currently work with the students on Course Selections for next school year. I would like to remind our families that we are holding students accountable towards the Texas 90% Attendance Rule. Students can lose credit in their courses if they have more than 4 unexcused (UNX) absences in that class. Please turn in doctor notes in when absent to crockett@austinisd.or and see the flyer below for opportunities on how to improve grades, make up hours for attendance, or earn credits to assure that we on staying on track to complete graduation requirements.
Bee Cave Bob, the armadillo did not see his shadow meaning spring is right around the corner with only 5 weeks until Spring break! Hang in there as I leave you with a quote, "Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." –Harriet Tubman

A Message from your Crockett ECHS PTSA
Hello,
Our next PTSA meeting is February 13th at 6:30 in the Crockett Library, and we will have a guest speaker!
Our Speaker will be Dr. Julia Clark who is a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas and will speak about "Supporting Your Teen’s Mental Health".
Todays’ teens are facing a multitude of mental health challenges and rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality are significantly higher than in the past. As a parent of an adolescent, navigating the parent-teen relationship can be overwhelming, confusing, and stressful. Many parents voice that that would like to have closer relationships with their teens, and are not sure how to go about best supporting their adolescents through today’s stressful world. This presentation is designed to help parents learn skills specific to the parent-adolescent relationship. Teens are welcome to join their parents for the event
Specific topics covered:
1. Typical teen behavior vs behaviors that are cause for concern
2. Validation of emotions while holding boundaries
3. Problem-solving collaboratively rather than combatively

January Teacher of the Month
Each month, Student Council asks the student body to nominate their favorite teacher for the esteemed honor of being Teacher of the Month. Student Council is excited to congratulate our January Teacher of the Month, Mr. Ward!!
According to his students, Mr. Ward deserves to be Teacher of the Month because:
He is very nice and helpful
He is really cool and awesome and funny
He makes learning fun and gives us snacks and is super supportive.
He always wants us to be our best and do our best. He wants us to be at an Academic Scholar level. He also calls us that which makes me feel like I could do way better than I did before. Always tells us to ask for help because he will help and walk us step by step until we understand it
He gives out snacks! and he is really good at explaining things and helping students
He is kind, respectful, funny, and just an overall great, well-rounded guy. Plus, he has awesome fashion taste.
We had several amazing teachers nominated this month, so we also want to give a shout-out to all of our nominees! Check out what students had to say about why they nominated these other awesome teachers:
Ms. Coro because she is sweet and so understanding.
Ms. Dunn because she's fire.
Ms. Lane because she is the most incredible art teacher.
Mr. Sepulvado because he teaches great and effectively while getting along with the class
Mr. Tomlinson because he's super chill and makes me feel welcome
Mr. Gannaway because he is the nicest person.
Mrs. Orr because she is super kind and understanding and awesome.
Ms. Hope because she has helped me with more things than just photojournalism like homework, getting better with cameras, and making me want to come to class. It's really amazing.
Ms. Harris because she's a great teacher.
Ms. Robinson because she is very kind and a wonderful teacher.

Health Reasons to Keep Your Child at Home
Fever: Temperature over 100º. Do NOT give medicine at home to bring the fever down and then send to school. If the child has a fever, they may be contagious and need to be kept at home.
- Your child must be fever free (without fever reducing medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen) for 24 hours before coming back to school
- Redness of the “white part of the eye”
- Yellow, green or clear discharge from the eye (lashes may be stuck together)
- Itchy eyes
- Eyelids may be red or swollen
- The child must be cleared in writing by a US medical provider in order to return
- Everyone at home should wash hands often with soap and water and avoid touching the eyes
- If running fever, student must stay home until fever is gone and bowel movements are “normal” for 24 hours without using diarrhea suppressing medications
- Have student drink plenty of fluids and seek medical evaluation for persistent temperature and diarrhea
- Texas State Law requires certain immunizations for children to have in order to be in school. Notice will be sent home by the nurse to notify parent when shots are due.
- Persistent cough / cold should be seen by a medical provider to make sure there is no flu, bronchitis or pneumonia
- Any vomiting, especially with a fever or other symptoms.
- A minor sore throat is not usually a problem. A severe sore throat may be Strep even if there is no fever. Keep the child home from school and contact a medical provider to be cleared to be in school. Documentation from a US medical provider in writing is needed for clearance.
- Children with a skin rash should be seen by a medical provider to be cleared to be in school
