Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe, Try Your Best

February 10, 2023
I Love to Read Month
February is I Love to Read Month. Attached below is the calendar of events for February.
Wacky Wednesday
Wednesday, Feb. 15th is Wacky Wednesday. Get silly! Wear your clothes backwards, inside out or mismatched!
Camp Read S'more
Friday, February 17th is Camp Read S'more. Bring a flashlight to camp out and read a good book!
Black History Month
February is Black History Month. This is a time that we recognize the many contributions of African Americans to the United States. We will introduce students to a variety of black people that have made and/or are making a significant difference to our country and the role that they play in our lives today.
New Diverse Books
Media Specialist, Rebecca Glassing, has done a great job of bringing in more diverse books for our students to read. It is so important for students to see themselves in books and in the curriculum. Below are three examples of books that are now available in our Media Center for students to check out.
Hair Love by Matthew Cherry
Figure It Out, Henri Weldon by Tanita Davis
Just Right Jillian by Nicole Collier
Language
Words have power and they matter. Our children are always listening to the words and language that adults use....and then they copy it. You can imagine what it is like hearing a kindergarten student drop an f-bomb in class. Please be aware of the little ears listening at all times. Thank you!
Trading Cards/Toys
Please have children keep any and all playing cards and toys at home. These items just end up causing a distraction at school, especially when they get lost or taken. This includes Pokemon cards.
High School Jazz Band Visit to Bridgewater
The Northfield High School Jazz Band under the direction of Nahal Javan stopped at Bridgewater yesterday to perform for our students. They did an amazing job! It is always fun to see former Bridgewater Bears!
2023-2024 KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION
February 17 - Registration Deadline for Kindergarten
https://northfieldschools.org/about/enrollment/
We had an amazing group of incoming Kindergarten families in on Tuesday night, and we are excited to see these families in the fall! If you have questions, please contact the office at 507-664-3300. I will also be sending out a monthly newsletter specifically for incoming Kindergarten families with additional information.
Kindess Retreat
The Kindness Retreat for fourth-grade has been re-scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 22nd. In the meantime, we can practice kindness every day!! I doesn't cost anything to treat others kindly every day!
Sleep
Sleep is so important for all of us, and this includes children. Children need 9-11 hours of sleep each night, and adults need at 8-9 hours each night. Children who are sleep deprived struggle during the day and have behaviors that mimic that of ADHD. Continuous sleep deprivation takes a toll on children and their ability to learn. I know we have some students who are awake well after midnight; this does not allow for enough sleep when they have to be at school at 8:20. Please help your child get enough sleep at night so they have a clear mind to learn during the day.
