Principal's Message

Sunny Heights Families,

We have had a GREAT week at Sunny Heights Elementary! Our students celebrated Black History Month with a school-wide assembly, then had a great family evening presenting their projects on history making African-Americans. Everyone in attendance learned a little and had a lot of fun!

Spring Break is just 10 school days away...can you believe it!! We want to make sure we get the most out of the next two weeks. Monday we will begin celebrating Read Across America with a spirit week focused on the importance and fun of reading. Please stress this with your children and make some time to read with them whenever possible. Also, our 3rd graders will be taking the IREAD test beginning March 11.

4th Grade Co-Ed Basketball Tournament

Mark your calendars for the 4th Grade Co-Ed Annual Basketball Tournament held in the Warren Central Fieldhouse on Friday, March 1st and 6:00 p.m. Please plan to attend and support our students and the Warren Arts and Education Foundation. ILEARN ASSESSMENT

3rd and 4th graders will take the new statewide assessment called ILEARN. This is the assessment that has replaced ISTEP. The ILEARN testing window opens on Monday, April 22nd. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students and assesses the areas of Language Arts and Math. Fourth grade will have additional Science assessment that they will complete. IREAD-3 Testing

3rd graders will take the IREAD-3 Assessment during the week of March 11th - 15th. This is a critical statewide standardized assessment. The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment measures foundational reading standards to Grade 3 students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010). Order forms have been sent home with your child to purchase a 2018-2019 Sunny Heights yearbook. There are additional forms available in the office if you need one. The cost of the yearbook is $12.00 and the pages are all in color and will have the students individual portrait in their classroom, club photos, classroom photos and activities that have happened this year at Sunny Heights. Reserve one for your child today!

Mission Statement: The EXCEL Program is designed to meet the unique academic and affective needs of highly talented students through a cooperative, enriched, and accelerated academic program where each person feels significant and appreciated.

The curriculum in the EXCEL program is differentiated and faster paced. Students will work above grade level.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - MONDAY, JUNE 3RD

Monday, June 3rd is Warren Township's last day of the regular school year (barring no further

weather closings). This date has been extended due to the following weather closings: November 15th and January 30th. All students will be dismissed early on this day.

Grades 5 - 12 will be dismissed at 1:30 pm

Grades K-4 will be dismissed at 2:30 pm

It is that time of year when we need reminders to make sure our children have appropriate clothing for recess. We will be going outside for recess if the temperature and the wind chill are above 20 degrees.

A NOTE FROM NURSE ROBERTA

Flu season is here. Your child's health is very important. Sometimes it's hard to tell if your child has the flu. Common symptoms include coughing, fever and chills. A fever can increase in just a few hours to very high levels. If your child is sick it is very important to keep them hydrated. Some examples include: water, Popsicles, juice, Pedialyte and Gatorade. Children, elderly and anyone who has chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more at risk from the flu. Flu can go into pneumonia which can be very dangerous. A child does not have to look sick to be sick. I am here as a resource for you. If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call at 317-532-2903.

CLASSROOM VISITS

In an effort to keep all children safe, anyone wanting to visit the classroom, have lunch with a child, and/or go on field trips must come to the school office to complete a background check. Please bring ID at that time. Visits are limited to 15 min. throughout the day. During those 15 min., parents are not able to talk with teachers. We do not want to interrupt class time. If you would like to meet with the teacher, schedule a meeting with the teacher prior to your visiting the school.

PTA

It is never to late to join our PTA. Joining the PTA allows you and your family to meet some great people. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, to build a rapport and discuss issues that are on your mind. $7.00 is all it takes to become a member. Please ask your child's teacher for more information.
