Integrated Arts News
What is Happening in Spanish Class?
Lothrop Spanish students have been busy these last several weeks, enriching their Spanish comprehension practice with cultural studies and thematic arts and crafts. Students in third through sixth grades pivoted from their various units to a study of Día de los Muertos traditions in Mexico, comparing and contrasting these with Halloween celebrations in the U.S. (which occur around the same time but are very different). This cultural unit culminated in a challenging, “origami-inspired” craft project: students created a Día de los Muertos Ofrenda altar (pictured) dedicated to someone/something they love, adorned it with traditional Día de Muertos decorations, like candles, pan de muerto, portraits, etc., and detailed all of the components of their altar in Spanish (practicing their presentational writing standard). The 3-dimensional aspect of the project proved challenging for many students and required extra class time to complete, but that extra effort only added to students’ satisfaction with their finished project. I was very pleased with the care and the personal touches students added to their Ofrendas.
Lothrop middle schoolers have now resumed their study of Spanish-speaking countries, and are embarking on a multi-stage research project with a creative twist—I look forward to sharing more of their work in our next Spanish letter. Our younger students are hard at work expanding their conversational vocabulary and enhancing their Spanish comprehension through games, interviews, songs, and more. My fourth graders have made huge strides in their understanding of complex Spanish sentences, and third graders are not far behind.
What is Happening in Music Class?
There has been a lot going on in the music room! Kindergarten, first and second grade students have been working on beat, rhythm and matching pitch through fun songs and games. Third and Fourth graders have been diligently working on the musical and have learned the first two big songs! Fifth and Sixth graders have been preparing for their concert on Thursday, December 14th at 6pm.
Mrs. Bruce would like to recognize the chorus for providing music for Pittsford's Veterans Day Ceremony and also for the Village Farm's Sap Bucket Tree Lighting. The singers did an amazing job at both events and represented Lothrop well while giving back to their community. Mrs. Bruce would also like to acknowledge Bailey, Carolyn and Morgan, who auditioned for the District Music Festival in November. The girls had to learn a challenging song and then sing it in front of a panel of judges. They did an excellent job and Mrs. Bruce is so proud of them for representing Lothrop!
Mrs. Bruce is looking for volunteers, with building experience, who would be willing to help build sets for this year's 3/4 musical, James and the Giant Peach. We are also looking for donations of materials (lumber, hardware, paint, etc) to help build the set. Please contact her if interested at cbruce@rnesu.org. Thank you!

Girls on the Run 2024 Information
Volunteer to be a Girls on the Run coach for Lothrop School this spring! The impact of a Girls on the Run volunteer coach is as boundless as it is beautiful. Girls on the Run is an after-school program that uses a research-based curriculum to empower, increase self-worth, and spark joy in its participants.
Not a runner? Haven’t coached before? No problem! Girls on the Run VT (GOTRVT) provides training, easy to follow lesson plans, supplies and support for a transformational season. Our season begins the week of March 18th, and ends with a celebratory 5K on Saturday June 8th in Manchester. The team will meet twice weekly for 90 minute sessions to connect, move, learn and have FUN! Fun fact, this is GOTRVT’s 25th anniversary season!
Coaches:
We do require 2 coaches to be present at each practice, and highly encourage having 3 coaches registered for when life happens, whether one coach gets sick or has plans to be out on a practice day.
Registration fee:
For the registration fee, we do not want finances to be a barrier to girls getting the benefit of participating in our program. Caregivers have the option to utilize a payment plan and a sliding scale within the registration form. Coach teams can also seek out funds to lower the registration fee equally for all participants, in which case the sliding scale and payment plan are still available to caregivers.
Key Dates:
Coach registration opens: November 7, 2023
In-person Coach Training: early February 2024
Participant Registration opens: February 28, 2024
Season begins: Week of March 18, 2024
5K Celebration in Manchester: June 8, 2024
Coach registration is now open. Visit gotrvt.org/coach to learn more or sign up to volunteer. Questions? Contact GOTRVT at anne@girlsontherunvermont.org or 802-871-5664.
