Former North Eugene High School Building Send-Off
Join us from 5–9 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, to walk the halls and say goodbye to the building where 4J students and staff have learned, worked and connected since 1957.
Take a trip back in time by visiting classrooms decked out in each decade of NEHS's history so visitors can connect with fellow alumni and share stories. Concessions, stickers and commemorative T-shirts also will be sold at the event.
An assembly at 6:30 p.m. will feature the pep band, cheer and dance teams, and bagpipers. At 7:30 p.m., the drama department will host a special alumni night for their spring production of The Addams Family. You can learn more and buy tickets here.
The new, state-of-the-art North Eugene High School building, located next door to the old high school building, will open this fall. Look for information to come about a grand opening this fall.
North Eugene Staff Tours New High School Building
It was a magnificent day to show off the new North Eugene High School building.
North Eugene staff lined up under clear blue skies on the afternoon of Friday, April 28, excited to get their first look at their new home during a two-hour self-guided tour. They walked the polished hallways to check out their future classrooms as well as the library, auditorium, main gym and other features of the two-story, 215,000-square foot building.
The building drew rave reviews.
"It looks great," industrial arts teacher Tyler Tjernlund said. "It's going to be a real treat being in here next year. I can't wait."
Added social studies teacher Clair Wiles: "Walking through this building with its design features, it's such an incredible gift from the community to our kids."
One of Superintendent Andy Dey's top priorities for this school year is ensuring the well-being and safety of all students and staff.
Toward that end, you will be asked soon to participate in another anonymous online employee feedback survey — the second to be conducted this school year — as district leaders are committed to more regularly checking in and hearing from you. Look for an email, directly from Upbeat, with a link to the survey, during the week of May 8.
The aim of the survey, which was first conducted in December, is to collect your insights to help gauge the current culture and morale in 4J's school buildings, district office and other locations. We are committed to creating the best possible working environment both to support student success and to ensure your work is meaningful and propels you forward in accomplishing your career and life goals.
The survey is managed by Upbeat, a third-party vendor, and all information shared is completely secure and anonymous. As it's critical to have all voices represented, district leaders are working with building administrators and supervisors to provide you time for the survey, which takes about 20 minutes to complete.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Update to New Middle School Schedule
District leaders have decided to phase in the new middle school schedule, with an incremental change coming in the fall.
The coming school year will be one of transition toward the new schedule taking full effect for the 2024–25 school year. This fall, five minutes will be added to the periods on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday to accommodate a solid 30-minute block for Advisory/Flex.
The superintendent agreed with the committee of 4J educators developing the new schedule to phase in the changes. This approach provides more time for our district and middles schools to decide on staffing and complete teaching assignments, among other tasks, for the coming school year; for the committee to have sufficient time to analyze and develop a final draft of the schedule; and for staff to have more opportunities for professional development in preparing for the shift to a new schedule.
The short-term alternative schedule aligns with the values the committee identified in developing the new schedule by:
- providing equity of opportunity across all schools
- keep a period for Advisory/Flex for advisory lessons and enrichment/intervention opportunities with more discussions happening at the building level for next year
- not supplanting course instructional time
- offering a 15-minute break
We're committed to provide you with updates in this important process as they become available.
New HEPA Filtration Systems for Classrooms
Ensuring the health and safety of students and employees in our school buildings and classrooms is a top priority for 4J.
With that in mind, our district has applied to receive portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration units from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) for each room that is used as a classroom in 4J. However, the exact number of units we may be awarded is unknown as OHA is taking orders from all K–12 school districts in Oregon and demand may exceed the available supply.
We'll keep you updated as more information become available.
New 4J Printer Offers Numerous Services
Central Print is our district's new printer and does far more than basic printing jobs.
Employees can submit print jobs using the online form at bit.ly.com/4Jprint or scanning the QR code in this article. For rush orders, call their office at 541-342-3624
In addition to standard printing, Central Print can produce indoor and outdoor signs, including banners and yard signs, stickers, magnets, posters and window clings. It also can print business cards featuring a fetching new design.
All orders will be delivered to the district office and then distributed to your building. Standard turnaround times are 3–5 business days. Arrangements also can be made to pick up orders from the Central Print office at 1940 Don St. in Springfield.
Dependent Eligibility Verification is Here
Employees who have dependents on their insurance plans provided through 4J must submit documents soon to verify their dependents' eligibility — or risk losing the coverage.
As a reminder, the timelines to submit the documentation now will be split up by employee group, as follows:
• Licensed/MAPS: The deadline to submit the required documentation for all employees in the two groups is today, Friday, April 28.
• Classified: Employees in the group will receive their first notification of the verification process from OEBB by email on Friday, May 5, and by mail after Monday, May 8. A second communication will go out to employees who haven't yet submitted their documentation during the week of June 1. The deadline to submit the required documentation for all employees in this group is Tuesday, June 27.
Warmed Up? Another Walking Challenge Starts Soon
4J's benefits department is kicking off its next weekly movement challenge starting Sunday, May 7, through 4J's Walker Tracker program, funded by a Oregon Education Association wellness grant.
The goal is to achieve the equivalent of 8,000 steps a day through walking or other physical activities, for a total of 56,000 steps from May 7–13. Two participants who sign up for the challenge will be randomly selected to receive a prize. Once you are registered online, click on the "Challenges" tab to select the "Healthy Eating in 3 Ingredients" challenge to participate. Good luck!
