Family Engagement Tip of the Month
Talking About Kindness
Students need to feel like they belong in school. Some of that feeling of belonging comes from other students around them; parents play an important role in ensuring their children are helping other students in their class feel like the belong. We often tell our children to be kind, but kindness is an abstract concept and can be difficult to teach.
How can you teach your child to be kind?
Model kindness - Be aware of how you talk about the people around you, how you treat strangers and your family members. You can use examples from your own life to help a child understand what it means to be kind.
Identify the emotions of people around you - When you see someone having a strong emotion, ask your child, “What do you think they’re feeling?” Identifying the emotions of other people can help your child understand how their classmates may feel.
Teach specific actions and phrases - Even as an adult, it is difficult to know what to say in tense situations. Give your children phrases to use so that they are ready for different situations. For example, if your child hears their friends making fun of someone, they could change the subject, walk away, or say something like, “That wasn’t nice"
Kindness doesn’t equal friendship - It’s ok for children to know they don’t have to be friends with everyone in their class, but they can treat everyone with kindness.
