Message from Mrs. Phelan
I hope you had a festive Halloween weekend! Friday nights, Trunk or Treat was a huge success. I am amazed by the level of creativity that went into decorating trunks. Hats off to the FTO for running such a fun event for our kids and adults!
Last Monday, I had the pleasure of presenting at the School Committee Meeting on behalf of Lowell School. It was Lowell's month to present a Learning Showcase. The presentation didn't go exactly as planned due to some technical issues. But with the help of tech wiz Mr. Chen, we turn our presentation into a video. Please take a look the students are absolutely adorable.
I can't believe November will begin on Tuesday. Don't forget, we will turn clocks back Saturday, November 5th!
With a grateful heart,
Stacy

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT SCHOOL
Dear Families,
A number of our students have personal electronic devices (PED) that they bring to school. At the Lowell, we recognize the value and importance of these devices and are actively teaching students on their responsible use. The reason for this message is because we’ve noticed general distracted behaviors such as students scrolling through screens / apps and exchanging text messages with their grown-ups on their smart watches.
Our students know that phones should be in their bags and turned off, and we will share our expectations around smart watch and general PED usage upon their return. If you have a urgent matter and need to communicate with your child(ren), we kindly ask that you communicate with the front office first and we’ll be sure to pass the information.
Should you have questions regarding PEDs, additional information could be located in the Student / Parent Handbook. We greatly appreciate your assistance to create a supportive learning environment for all of our students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Phelan
A reminder to families about the district guidelines for personal electronic devices. The information below is from the 2022-2023 Student/Parent Handbook. Please review the guidelines below and discuss them with your student.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
To better protect students from misuse of handheld devices the following guidelines have been established:
1. In the school building, personal electronic devices (PED) should be off, unless specified otherwise by the teacher. PEDs may be used during school hours under the supervision of the teacher only.
2. Any use of these PEDs outside of teacher supervision is strictly prohibited. Faculty/staff have the right to confiscate a PED and turn it into the principal’s office. The student may pick up the device at the office at the end of the school day. Repeated offenses may require the parent to pick up the device.
3. Urgent messages between parents/guardians and students must be communicated via the main office.
4. The school is not responsible for the maintenance, loss, theft or damage of any personal electronic device.
5. All use of personal electronic devices is commensurate with the District’s Acceptable Use Policy.
Scenes From Last Week
Ms. Krishnan and Ms. Arekar lead our Diwali Celebration in Grades 1 & 2
Two Lowell School mothers (Sheila Krishnan mother to Merra Cambell in second grade , and Sneha Arekar mom to Om Dubey in grade one) visited Lowell on Monday. Grades 1 & 2 students had the opportunity to create a rangoli out of colorful sand with their classmates. They also had the opportunity to sample a delicious treat call Gulab Jamun which taste very much like a donut soaked in maple syrup.
What is Diwali?Diwali celebrates a Hindu god coming to Earth to destroy a demon that was destroying peace on Earth. In another, it celebrates a prince's royal homecoming after years in exile. As a whole, the Festival of Lights, which is Diwali, marks the victory of good over evil.
What is a Rangoli?
Traditionally, Rangoli is an art of decoration drawn on the floor or the entrances of homes. It is thought to bring good luck, prosperity on the house and in the family, and to welcome guests. Some mothers in India do this activity every morning, or on a special festive occasion like Diwali, Onam, and Pongal.

Scenes from Lowell West
Fifth graders in Ms. Sudbay and Ms. Walker's 5th grade classroom participated in an engineering design challenge this week. They had to work together to design, build, test, and redesign towers that could hold a large eraser. Students could only use 2 sheets of paper and masking tape to build their towers. Students had a blast as they worked through the design process and grew a deeper understanding of the hard work, cooperation, and perseverance it takes to be an engineer.
Second Grade Parents Come Join Morning Meeting
Caregivers Are Invited to Attend Morning Meeting with Your Student
There are numerous benefits to starting each day with a morning meeting in the classroom that make it worth the few extra minutes each morning. It’s important to note that benefits are seen when morning meeting is a regular and consistent part of each day. Come join us and attend the morning meeting with your student. The schedule by grade is below. Please stay and have a cup of coffee with Mrs. Phelan and Mr. Chen and our SEL team. We will also review how Title One funds support teaching and learning at Lowell.
Here are a few positive outcomes that morning meeting can support:
- Builds meaningful relationships and establishes the trust (student to student and teacher to student)
- Sets the tone for a positive classroom climate
- Creates a space to highlight and discuss mental health needs
- Promotes the idea that all voices matter and are listened to
- Provides opportunities for teaching social, emotional, and academic skills
- Increases student confidence and self-awareness
- Motivates learners to do their best
- Supports academic learning
- Creates a kinder community
Simply put, morning meetings help all students do their best.

Enjoy three floors of activities for the young and young-at-heart including crafts, scent stations, traditional decorations, Náhuatl stories, decorating a sugar skull (extra $7 fee), painting demonstrations, folk dances and two live music performances. Outside the museum, visitors can purchase Mexican hot chocolate, café de olla, pan de muerto (sweet bread), and tamales from Jose’s Torta Mexicana. Mexican food trucks Tenoch and North East of the Border will also offer delicious tortas and tacos for sale.
Event activities are free with regular museum admission. Sugar skulls extra ($7 each). Free parking at the 52 Oxford Street Garage.
