Canaan Middle School Update
October 27th, 2023
Principal Corner
Dear Canaan Families,
The past two weeks have been filled with a flurry of activities and events that have left a lasting impact. Let's dive into the details!
Unity Day - Unity Day was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the past weeks. Our students did an exceptional job, and we couldn't be more proud. It was a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity, teamwork, and collaboration.
STEM Day - STEM Day provided our students with a hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through various engaging activities, they had the chance to immerse themselves in the exciting world of STEM. We have many pictures of these events later in the newsletter.
Donuts with Dudes and Muffins with Misses - We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended "Donuts with Dudes" and "Muffins with Misses." These events created special moments for our students to bond with the significant adults in their lives. The success of these events would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and the generous contributions from our school community.
Parent-Teacher Conferences on November 6th As a reminder, our upcoming parent-teacher conferences will take place on November 6th. This is a chance for parents to engage in meaningful discussions with our teachers about their child's academic progress and any questions or concerns they may have.
Cookie Dough Fundraiser Pickup on November 6th - Mark your calendars for November 6th! This is the day when you can pick up the items from our cookie dough fundraiser. We extend our gratitude to all who supported this fundraiser, as the proceeds directly contribute to enhancing our school's programs and activities.
In conclusion, the last two weeks at Canaan Middle School have been a testament to the enthusiasm and involvement of our school community. Together, we create an environment that nurtures and empowers our students to reach their full potential.
Thank you for being an integral part of the Canaan Middle School family. We look forward to many more exciting events and opportunities ahead.
Warm regards,
Mr. Walter, Principal

5th Grade Update
Today during WIN period, the fifth grade also had their first quarter awards ceremony. Students were recognized for earning straight As and honor roll (All As and Bs). Teachers also recognized students who demonstrated outstanding effort, teamwork, character, and perseverance and growth during the first grading period. Congratulations to all the students who earned a certificate or ribbon today!
This week marked the beginning of the second grading period. Parents, if you are not yet signed up as an Observer in Canvas, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher to get a pairing code so you can view his/her grades and set up notifications for missing and low assignment alerts. Some parents accidentally signed up for a student account instead of a parent account! If that's the case, you won't be able to set up the notifications.
Finally, please make sure you are checking out the 5th-grade electronic planner each week! This is a great way to stay on top of what your child is learning and might need to complete at home each week. Just make sure you're clicking on the tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet to find the most current week's assignments.
Counselor's Corner - Mrs. Hein
The lesson with 5th graders this month focused on staying safe online. Students will be able to:
Understand the benefits and risks when interacting with people online.
Identify examples of online interactions that may cause red flag feelings.
Develop strategies for making responsible decisions when communicating online.

Common Sense Media
Common Sense Media is an online tool that can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding media use. This tool can be used for many types of media, including books, movies, video games, and apps.
Canvas is a Learning Management System that is used in grades 5-12 at Jonathan Alder. You and your student will find a lot of information about the school and your student's classroom through this platform. It is VERY important to stay connected and log on to Canvas. This link should help you log on and explain Canvas.
Talking Points
We are excited to share that our staff members will be using a safe and easy to
use two way communication tool called TalkingPoints to communicate with
families. Families have three easy ways to use TalkingPoints to communicate
with their children’s teachers for free! You can use text message, download the
app or use it on the web at https://talkingpts.org/families/. Once you log in to
Talking Points, you should be able to see your students and teachers.
