Lottery is Open Now!
- The 2023-2024 lottery for Charter Schools is still open but closes February 10, 2023! If your child has any siblings that are not currently enrolled into Chesapeake Math & IT North, but you wish to enroll them, now is the time to enter for a seat for the upcoming school year. Please be mindful that a sibling is a brother or sister by blood, marriage, or adoption living in the same household (friends, cousins or two separate families living under the same roof do not qualify as siblings.) If your potential student does not have a student ID number please reach out to your boundary school to obtain one.

Hello Parents/Guardians!
As we are now into cold/flu season and also still dealing with COVID-19, this note serves as a gentle reminder regarding a few things related to student health.
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
1. Sick children need to be kept home from school; to include excessive coughing, sore throat, runny nose/congestion, vomiting, and/or high body temperatures (fever). Resting at home will help them get better more quickly and will prevent them from exposing other children or the staff to their illness.

Please note, we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann (sally.warf@pgcps.org), Dr. Fryson (tfryson@cmitelementary.org) and Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org). Saturday Academy
Saturday Academy is in session this Saturday, January 28, 2023. Drop off by 9:00 a.m. and pick up by 11:00 a.m. Saturday Academy will be in session February 4th, 2023. Saturday Academy will not be in session February 11, 2023 as that is the STEM Fair date.

Tutoring start 1/30/2023
Tutoring begins January 30, 2023 for students who have been invited for Math tutoring only. Students who have been invited for Reading Tutoring will begin Thursday, February 2, 2023. Pick up is promptly at 4p.m.

Brag Tag Valentine Grams
Brag Tag Valentine Grams will go on sale January 27-February 8th. Tags will come with a cable ring which will allow your scholar to attach to lunchboxes, backpacks, etc.

Hello Kindergarten Families,
It is the end of January already, and next month we will be highlighting “Black Resistance” for the month of February.
Please check the weather daily, so your scholar is dressed appropriately for outdoor recess. Please make sure that you are reading any messages via dojo, class story, or emails pertaining to your scholar’s class.
Homework is posted by the end of the day on Fridays, for the upcoming week. Please make sure that your scholar is completing their homework assignments, they are graded on completion weekly. If your scholar is in enrichment, please provide your scholar with a homework journal daily, so they can work on the assignments in enrichment.
We are looking for chaperons for an upcoming field-trip that we are planning for the kindergarten team. If you are interested, please make sure that you go through all the required steps to be fully cleared to volunteer. The date will be announced when we have confirmation.
We are looking forward to celebrating the 100th Day of School. We are asking that you create a 100th Day of school T-shirt for your scholar to wear.
We have completed our MAP Assessments and we are finishing up with our Dibels Assessment for our Kindergartners. Our final Assessment for the winter will be the DRA Assessments, that will be completed over the next couple of weeks. Please make sure that your scholars are well rested and eat a balanced breakfast so they can have a clear mind and be ready for the upcoming assessments.

100th Day of School February 7, 2023
Tutoring will begin January 30, 2023 (you will be notified if your scholar has been selected for tutoring).
If you signed your scholar up for clubs, their afternoon dismissal is for them to be in holding with the enrichment scholars. Please remember the days that your scholar is in a club. If they are usually a car or van rider, they will not be at their regular scheduled dismissal area. If for some reason they are not to go to their club that day, please notify your scholar’s teacher ahead of time, so they can be at the correct dismissal location.
ELA: We are working to demonstrate the understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to stories. We will also be reviewing syllables, using the clapping method when saying the word, blending syllables to form multisyllabic words. These are our sight words that we will be working on for the week: any, come, play. We will use our site words in sentences, and write them correctly on lined paper.
Math: We are finishing up our Topic 9, learning all about teen numbers. Writing the numbers 11-20, represent numbers with objects, identify numbers in a group, and Identify the unique symbol that goes with each number word. We will continue to use math manipulatives to assist with solving mathematical problems.
Science: We are discussing different types of severe weather, tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and lightning. We will also discuss how we are to be prepared for these types of weather conditions. Practicing tornado/earthquake drills in the class, and how we can stay safe.
Social Studies: We are reviewing describe the relative location of a person, place, or thing. Providing clues such as landmarks to describe a location without giving the direct address. (absolute location)
Health: We are continuing to talk about the importance of taking care of our teeth and visiting the dentist. Why are our teeth important to us? How should we take care of our teeth? Ask the students how they should take care of their teeth. Why is brushing teeth important? We will watch the video and see if the students were correct. Discuss why they should stay away from sugars and a lot of acidic foods
Friendly reminder: Class dojo is one of our main forms of communication for any classroom activities, events, and messages. Please make sure that you are connected to your scholar’s Class dojo. Teacher emails and the communication folder are other ways to stay connected as well.

Your scholar should have a full set of extra change of clothes (uniform) that can be kept in their cubbies.
Please label all of your scholar’s items, sweaters, jackets, water bottles, lunch bags.
If your scholar’s form of transportation changes for dismissal, please complete the necessary forms and upload into the document as well as notify your scholar’s teacher.

The 100th Day of School is February 7th! We will be celebrating the number '100' all day and we encourage first graders to wear "100 year old" costumes depicting how they will look at 100 years old.
Please remember that if your dismissal plans change, notify your child's teacher via dojo as well as the front office before 1:00 p.m. on the day of the change.
Additionally, please ensure that your child is dressed warmly when they arrive to school in the mornings. We have outdoor recess at 10:20 a.m. if the temperature is at or above 32 degrees. It is important that students are dressed appropriately for the weather.

ELA: Next week in reading, we will begin Unit 3. This unit is titled "Our Traditions." Throughout the week we will use theme to determine key ideas in fables. The spelling pattern will be long i: i, ie, i_e, igh, and y.
Math: In Math, we will be working on Topic 7. This topic covers problem solving using addition and subtraction.
Science: We will be presenting STEM Fair Projects and learning about Earth's land and water.
Social Studies: We will be learning about community leaders.

This week in Reading, students will continue to work on Unit 3: Lesson 1 with the historical fiction Below Deck: A Titanic Story. Students will continue to work on the following prefixes pre-, dis-, in-, im-, and non-. Students will also continue to read and analyze their third grade novel Sarah, Plain, and Tall. In Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 3 Communities Build a Nation.
In Math, Scholars this week are taking our mid-year cumulative benchmark. This will be a review of all the math skills we have worked on in 3rd grade! Then we'll jump straight into Topic 9, fluently adding and subtracting up to 1000. In Science this week, we are devoting this week to presenting and learning about each others' STEM Fair Projects. We'll cap off our week of presenting with 3rd grade's field trip to the Maryland Science Center!

Our 100th day of school will be on February 7, 2023. Students are invited to wear or create a shirt to celebrate the 100th day of school. Please see the attached picture for reference.
Also, we will be doing STEM stations in class to celebrate the 100th day of school. We will be making cakes out of Play-doh and candles, building a tower with numbered cups, making shaped glasses with pipe cleaners, and making party hats out of pattern blocks!

Fantastic Fourth Graders!
We strongly encourage parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your scholar's progress in all academic areas. Students can redo eligible assignments within a week of being posted. Weekly check-ins with your scholar about his/her grades is a great way to setting goals and reflecting on progress.
We are in need of hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and facial tissues. The cold and flu season is upon us and we would like to continue to keep our classrooms germ free.

100 Days of School:
Our 100 days of school celebration will be held on 2/7/2023. Students have the option of dressing like a 100 year old person or representing 100 on their attire. Be creative! Thank you for your participation!

RELA
This week in RELA, we finished Unit 2 and took our Unit 2 assessment. Next week, we will begin Unit 3: Reflections. Our first week's focus will be on: Analyze Characters, Make Connections, Words with Latin Roots, Prepositions & Prepositional Phrases, and Analyzing an Opinion Essay.
Social Studies:
Students will continue to dive into Chapter 7: Life in the Young Republic. They will learn how the U.S. grew rapidly in the 1800s by exploring the leaders in government and their impact on society. They will also learn about the War of 1812 and how it brought strength, pride, and unity to the American people as a unified culture. They will dive into the processes that African Americans, women, and other groups experienced with the lack of equal rights and the harsh impact that this had within their communities and lifestyles. Let's go Tigers!
Math:
This week in Math, students will solve problems using models, including cases of fractions with unlike denominators. Students will use place value and sharing to divide greater dividends. Dividing with 2-digit divisors is just an extension of dividing with 1-digit divisors.
Science:
In Science this week, students will wrap up "Patterns in Space" and close out with an end of topic test.

Tigers have presentations this week and next. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to finish their projects and critiques. Projects include portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, abstract, and other activities that develop their understanding of depth of field and value. We will continue to stress craftsmanship as a priority.
Music
Hey Tiger families! Students in grades 3-5 are deep in their digital audio workspace unit, and are using this week to REMIX popular songs! We are making a choice between a Beyonce song, a Steve Lacy Song, and a Glass Animals song and adding beats and instruments according to the BPM and KEY of the song! Rock on Tigers!
Grades 1-2 finished up their instrument families unit and are creating their own imaginary instruments. Grade 1 is the lucky group that will get to execute their designs using recycled materials in two weeks!
