Principal's Message

Hello Eagle Family,

Classes have started. Students have the routine. Now it is time to add a few middle school social opportunities to the calendar for students. These include invitations to participate in Student Council, Eagle Wings, Scholars' Bowl, athletic events, and so much more. Some of the meetings are held after school, which means parents must arrange transportation. However, these are wonderful opportunities for students to make life-long social connections.

September reminds us that we are in the second month of school. This means grades are available for review in Schoology. Remember students must maintain an average of 70% in all classes and fewer than 15 tardies/early dismissals per school year. Please make sure your child is passing each class and arrives daily before 7:20. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Have you seen a message like this around school? Mrs. Toni Morris, our media specialist, personally crafted these beautiful and unique signs from repurposed materials. Each one has the message "Be the Light....Be Extraordinary!" We love her creativity and hope you will be on the look-out for one of these uplifting messages in classrooms and areas around campus! When you see her, be sure to tell her which one is your favorite!

Chromebook Reminders

Students, your school-issued Chromebook should be brought to school every day with its charger and case. Students should get into the habit of charging Chromebooks at night to reduce classroom interruptions. Please be responsible with your Chromebook and do not leave it in classrooms, the cafeteria, or the gym, as you will not be allowed to disrupt instruction to retrieve items left elsewhere. If you have any problems with your device or your account, please ask to see Mrs. Toni Morris in the media center.

Make-up Picture Day

If you were absent on Picture Day, photographers from Jim Owen Studios will be here on Monday, September 26 for Make-up Picture Day. Any student or faculty/staff member who did not have their picture taken should plan to do it from 7:15 - 8:15 am on this day. Please ensure that your student is in full compliance with the uniform policy. Science Fair

Thank you to the many parents and students who attended the Science Fair information meetings on August 23. Your commitment to your child's success is evident! If you were not able to join us, please talk with your student about their science fair project and be sure that you both understand the expectations and deadlines. Clark-Shaw is top middle school!

Clark-Shaw did it again! Through the efforts of our students, families, and supporters, we were again named the top middle school in Mobile County for 2021-2022 by the American Heart Association. Led by Coach Peabody, our school raised over $2,000.00 to support heart research through the American Heart Challenge. Way to go Eagles! Be on the lookout for this year's fundraising activities during Healthy Heart Month in February.

Our opening football game at home vs. Semmes went down to the wire, and in a thrilling finish, we emerged victorious 7-6! With less than 2 minutes to go and on a 4th & 1, quarterback Leartist Williams pitched the ball to running back Jacob Massey who took it all the way to the end zone! Henry Sprague kicked the extra point, and when Semmes had a chance to score, our defense (Tylin Dosse-Beulah and DeMarcus Hector) came away with an interception! The Eagles let the clock run out as they took the victory formation. Way to go Eagles!!

Student Attendance at Games

Students are required to remain in uniform if you stay after school for athletic events. You cannot change clothes for safety and security reasons. Your school uniforms help us easily identify our CSMS students for supervision purposes and in case an emergency arises. However, if you are attending with a parent, this rule does not apply.

All students should be picked up promptly after each event or you will lose your attendance privileges.

Student Council

It's time to elect homeroom representatives for Student Council! If you are interested in running, you must complete and return an application form by Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Candidates must have a B average and no suspensions on file. Student Council meetings will be held after school twice a month on Tuesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 pm in Mrs. Mattern's room (220). School-wide officer elections will be held later this month, but only homeroom representatives are eligible to run. History Lovers- this is for you!

If you love history, you should consider getting involved in National History Day! Clark-Shaw students have been successful at the local and state levels and have even had projects compete in national competitions! This year, we will be hosting a small group of students after school on Wednesdays to learn useful research skills and deeply investigate historical topics. See Mr. Roberts for more information.

Eagle Wings Service Club

Eagle Wings will have its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 6th. Eagle wings is a student-driven, community service and leadership club that is sponsored by Mr. Roberts and meets in his classroom (room 217). It is open to all students in grades 6-8. To attend the meeting, please bring back the signed permission form available from him or your homeroom teacher.

Strings in Schools

Interested in playing the violin, viola, or cello? Once again, Clark-Shaw Magnet School is partnering with the Mobile Symphony to offer string classes taught by professional musicians during school hours. Science Project goes to Nationals!

Brooke May, a 7th grader at Clark-Shaw Magnet School, was selected as one of 10 students in the entire state of Alabama for the Broadcom Masters competition. Only 300 students in the nation are recommended for this competition after winning at their regional and state levels. She will find out later this month if she will be invited to compete in Washington, D.C. as part of the 30 national finalists. Brooke's science fair project looked at the effect of traditional soil vs. water beads on the biomass of collard green plants. The goal was to determine if water beads were a good replacement since they are lighter and more easily transported for space or in case of soil contamination. Her project won 1st place in the school-wide science fair, 2nd place in the regional science fair, and 3rd place in the Alabama state science fair in the category of animal, place, computational & bioinformatics sciences. She was also awarded the Auburn University Biological Sciences Award for Outstanding Poster in Animal and Plant Sciences as well as the Auburn University Society of Women in Sciences and Mathematics Achievement Award. Congratulations, Brooke, and good luck!

Notes from our Nurse

Our Covid guidelines have recently been updated. Students and staff exposed to Covid whether in the classroom or in the community no longer need to quarantine UNTIL or UNLESS they develop symptoms. This is regardless of vaccination status. If your student develops symptoms, you should keep them at home and contact the nurse for further instruction. Covid symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, congestion, trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, abdominal pain or stomachache, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting or sore throat. If your student tests positive, you should contact the school nurse, and keep them at home for at least five days. Please remember that with any illness the student should stay home until they are 24 hours fever-free without medication. Also, please remember that if your student is absent to send a parent note or a doctor note to cover the absence. Carpool Reminders

Thank you for adhering to our carpool procedures to ensure a safe and efficient take-in and dismissal. For the safety of everyone, please keep these things in mind:

1. No cell phone use is allowed while driving on campus.

2. Please switch lanes ONLY when directed by staff to do so.

3. You may not leave your car parked unattended in one of the 4 car lanes.

4. If your windows are tinted, please roll down your window so staff can see your thumbs up or thumbs down sign.

Report Bullying or Threats

The Mobile County Public School System is using "One Voice Matters," which is an anonymous reporting system for students to share information about bullying, threats, or abuse which may be impacting them or someone they know at school. To participate, students can text OVMCPS to 444999 or go to https://www.myovm.com/ and click on "Submit a Report."

Student Planners

Parents, did you know that your student was given a 2022-2023 planner in early August? This is a great tool to help them stay organized with homework assignments, science fair due dates, extracurricular activities, and other important dates. These were purchased using federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) grant funds. If your student did not receive one, please have them ask their social studies teacher. We want to encourage all our students to use these to have a successful year!

Spanish Plaza Tile Project

The Mobile Historic Development Commission is partnering with the city of Mobile to revitalize Spanish Plaza, and you can be a part of history! They are desperately seeking local artists to create some beautiful pieces of art with the original tiles that were removed from Spanish Plaza. These beautiful tiles could make many different pieces of art, all while helping with the revitalization of the park they came from. More information can be found at this website: [click here].

Mobile Mathematics Circle

Do you love math or the challenge of tackling mathematical problems? Consider participating in the Mobile Mathematics Circle, a weekly gathering of middle and high school students guided by professional mathematicians. Sessions are free and will be held on Mondays from 7:00 - 8:00 pm via Zoom. The first meeting is Monday, Sept. 12. To register, [click here].

Schoology & Student Grades

Schoology is the learning management system used by Mobile County Public Schools. It is the platform teachers use to take attendance, assign grades, and publish instructional materials for students. Students who have been absent should log into Schoology and check each course for assignments and instruction they missed. Parents and guardians, you are asked to please monitor your child's progress on a regular basis. Our PTA needs you!

Family membership forms are being sent home this week to encourage families to join our Clark-Shaw PTA for $10. There is also a convenient way to join online [click here]. Joining PTA does NOT require you to volunteer on campus. But for those who would like to help, several opportunities are available, including dance committee, awards committee, concessions and ticket sales, Spring Fling, and other events. We appreciate the efforts and support of our parents and families, and we hope you will consider joining!
