Belridge Secondary ESC News
August 2023

From the Principals Desk
This term we welcomed Miss Emily Hughes back to our school and Miss Emma Fisher joined our team here at Belridge Secondary ESC - we know that you will enjoy working with all of the staff and students. Students in all year levels across the school have been working towards achieving success in all learning areas and Term 3 has started with IEP and planning meetings with families to set relevant and meaningful goals for the second semester. I would encourage you all to keep in regular communication with your child's teacher through the student diary that is provided, email or by contacting the front office on 9408 8050. Please also remember to notify the school and school bus if required if your child is going to be absent from school.
August has arrived and we are all looking forward to much warmer days ahead. Term 3 is always jam packed with many events and activities along with our combined Athletics Carnival which is being held on Friday 1st September 2023 and this much anticipated event is enjoyed by all. We look forward to seeing the determination, spirit and enthusiasm that is displayed by all students. Our final School Development Day for 2023 was held at the end of Week 4 and all staff participated in Professional Development which was the final of a three-part series in Collaborative Regulation that was delivered by Darin Cairns. These sessions have been an extremely beneficial learning experience for all staff and clearly articulates some useful understanding and strategies that align with our Positive Behaviour approach here at Belridge SESC.
Week 5 of Term 3 is usually celebrated as 'Science Week' at all schools across Australia and Belridge SESC was no exception. A massive thank you to Mrs Claire Semmens and Mrs Sharon Mandoreba who collaboratively organised a bundle of Scientific experiments and resources for use across the school. Students and staff all enjoyed participating in these experiments that tested their problem-solving skills, making predictions, cause and effect whilst having lots of fun to see what resulted! Along with our internal scientific focus, our school participated in the Joondalup Learning Community 'Science Week Challenge' with our students tasked with the job of creating and designing a Robot teacher. Congratulations to Years 7-3, 8-3, 9-2 and 11-1 that took up the challenge to create unique, talented and creative Robot teachers. Mrs Shayne Hutchings, Ms Lauren Thompson and I were required to select two finalists to showcase their creations at a JLC event and this was indeed extremely challenging as all classes went above and beyond in their creations. Well done to Years 7-3 and 8-3 who were selected as finalists for their Robot Teachers aptly named T.O.F.E (Teacher of Future Education) and C.E.R . (Classroom Education Robot) for their collective talents and creativity - budding scientists in the making each and every one of you!
There are so many highlights, news and students' achievements mentioned in this newsletter and we hope you enjoy the class stories and photos that follow. To our amazing Belridge Bulls Basketball Team that recently participated in an All-Abilities Basketball Carnival, hosted by the Perth Wildcats - thank you for your talents, efforts, sportsmanship and perseverance along with representing our school with pride. A big thank you as well to our coaches Mr Tom Cann and Mr AJ McCulloch for your organisation and coaching styles that encouraged and supported the team. We look forward to this potentially becoming an annual event.!
Last term we held a Cyber Safety Parent Seminar that raised awareness of the potential online social media. We encourage parents to be aware of the influence that many messaging platforms and common apps such as Snapchat and Tik Tok and how this can occasionally impact on social relationships. A range of family resources designed to assist parents to navigate the online world and be Cyber Safety aware can be found at Families - Cyber Safety Project
A reminder to parents who bring their children to and from school to please adhere to the one-way entrance at the front of the school and to avoid parking in the Emergency access vehicle driveway at the front of the school. Thank you for considering the safety of our students and staff.
We look forward to the second half of Term 3 and hopefully some warmer weather along the way!

Middle School News
Hello to all our Belridge Secondary ESC families. It’s hard to believe that we are now halfway through the school year. The start of Term 3 saw all students returning to a busy routine of schoolwork. Classes have also been involved in a number of events over the last six weeks including Science Week activities, JLC Science Week Robot Competition, Book Week dress up and activities, Student Council Youth Workshop and the Caltex AFL Football Clinic. The Caltex AFL All Star Program commenced this week with our year 9 cohort and will be conducted over four concurrent sessions. Each session runs for 1hour and focusses on skills required to play AFL. Activities include running, marking, kicking, handballing etc. Greg Clark from the West Coast Eagles ran the first AFL Football Clinic here at Belridge SESC and students thoroughly enjoyed the session. At the end of the 4 weeks Belridge SESC year 9 cohort along with other schools taking part in the ALL Star Program will come together to take part in the Caltex Cup.
Our year 7’s have settled into the secondary schooling routine and it has been great to see so many newly formed friendships. We have some of our year 7’s spending their break times in Lego Club while others are spending time with friends playing basketball or soccer or they are in the library having some quiet time while others are enjoying the newly built Ninja Playground. At the end of Term 2, over the school holiday break we had a number of pavement markings installed in and near our Education Support areas. Mathematics, alphabet and social skills are some of the playground markings that we voted on as a teaching group. Students have enjoyed playing these games with their friends during break times. The markings have also been utilised by classes to complement their maths programs and social skills programs.
Teachers have been extremely busy this term participating in a range of professional learning. We have been working through and reflecting on the Departments Quality Teaching Strategy (QTS) and we have recently commenced our third module on Emotional Regulation presented by Darin Cairns, Clinical Psychologist. Teachers have also been busy engaging parents in meetings to identify and establish IEP goals for Semester Two. Well done to all the middle school students on a great start to Semester Two.

Our focus in Week 2 this term was the Plastic Free Challenge. Our Enviro-mentals team rolled out an Innovation Solution Challenge where students brainstormed ideas to minimise our use of single use plastic throughout our school. Congratulations to our Senior School winner - Rory Johnson for his ingenious solution of asking customers to bring in their own containers to use for Cobra Cafe meals.
The Plastic Free Challenge ended with a Plastic Free Day on Friday and an innovative Planeteer QR Code Question Hunt which classes participated in around the school. Thank you to our Enviro-mental heroes Mr Simon Malloy and Mrs Carolyn Street for all their work in this area.
To support our Health Education and Protective Behaviours programs, students in our Year 10 and 11 classes are participating in sessions with Samara from SHQ to explore and develop their understanding, skills and strategies in selected areas. Samara has begun presenting to classes on Fridays and all feedback from staff and students has been very positive.
As part of our staff-wellbeing initiative to acknowledge and show appreciation for the commitment, care and support our staff give to ALL students EVERYDAY, Belridge SESC said GRACIAS by celebrating TACO TUESDAY in Week Three of this term. A big thank you to Mrs Paula Wearing, Mr Tom Cann, Mr Blair Finnis and students in 12-3 for organising the delicious taco fillings and to Mrs Franklin for providing the decorations. TACO TUESDAY was just a small way of showing our appreciation and it was lovely to see everyone enjoy their taco, the music, and Mexican accessories.
Our Staff Development Day was packed with informative, relevant, and meaningful learning for our teachers and Education Assistants at Belridge SESC. We welcomed Darin Cairns for our morning session where he presented Part Three of his Collaborative Regulation series. Our leadership and teaching team came together in the afternoon to continue our commitment to the Department’s Quality Teaching Strategy – Teaching for Impact initiative. The collaborative session focused on Building Engagement with discussions and group work around What Teachers BELIEVE and What Teachers KNOW. We look forward to continuing to explore and delving deeper into the Teaching for Impact overview, resources and supporting documents in future collaborative sessions.
SCIENCE WEEK came to Belridge SESC in Week 5 this term with many exciting experiments being carried out across all year levels. Our Science Superstars Mrs Claire Semmens and Mrs Sharon Mandoreba provided action packed opportunities for classes to learn about all things SCIENCE in fun and practical ways and it has been fantastic to see classes sharing their experiences and having lots of FUN in their learning.

Student Council Youth Workshop and Ordinary Council Meeting
BSESC Student Council were invited to attend the YOUTH WORKSHOP AND ORDINARY COUNCIL MEETING which was held on Tuesday the 22nd of August 2023. The inaugural Youth Workshop is always highly successful. The Youth Workshop was interactive and covered a range of topics including, but not limited to; education, leadership, identity and belonging. The Ordinary Council Meeting was a great learning experience for students as it highlighted the decision-making process of our Local Government Council and provided awareness of civic and community issues with the community. It was also a great opportunity for the City of Joondalup to engage with young people within the community and become aware of local issues which youth perceive as important. The six students who represented BSESC were high engaged in all activities and volunteered answers on a number of topics. We offered transport to and from the venue to the student councillors from Belridge Secondary College which was a great opportunity for our students across both schools to get to know each other and support our ethos of 'Two Schools One Community'.

Table Tennis anyone?
Recently the school purchased two table tennis tables for the students to use. A special thanks goes out to Mr Tom Cann for his hard work in helping to acquire these new tables. Terrific work Mr Cann!
In addition to the new tables, the school has also been fortunate to receive a donation of around $1000 worth of high quality table tennis equipment from a Perth based, table tennis bat manufacturer. This donation includes handmade bats, balls and nets. We thank Mr Shannon Woodbury from www.wakkibat.com for his generosity.

All Ability Basketball Carnival
Last week, a select number of students across Years 10, 11 and 12 were invited to participate in an ‘All Abilities Basketball’ carnival, held at Bendat Basketball Centre in Floreat, hosted by the Perth Wildcats.
Over the past five weeks, the players have been put through their paces on the court and boy did it pay off! “The Belridge Bulls” won all four games, sharing the championship with two other schools. It is fair to say that all the students of Belridge had an absolute blast!
So, without further ado, allow me to present a player and staff rundown of the day…
Joshua AKA “The Wall.” Josh was our master of defence. His defensive smarts and court awareness was pivotal to our defence and overall game play. Josh cheered on all his teammates and encouraged others when they needed a pickup.
Theo AKA “The Smiler.” Theo (as always) played every single minute with a smile on his face. Whether it was dribbling the ball down court, passing it off, or running back for defence, Theo was all smiles!
Kade AKA “The Stat Man.” When Kade wasn’t dominating the court and sinking buckets, he was on the sideline with his clipboard. Kade kept track of the overall scores, individual player points and kept us on point with our games. When Kade nailed a two pointer, the whole team went up in celebration, it was wonderful to see.
Blake AKA “The Ice Man.” Blake is a huge, and I mean HUGE, Wildcats fan. Not only was he super cool on the court, Blake froze when he got to meet Tai Webster (Perth Wildcats Point Guard) face to face! Blake was an awesome team player and joy to have as part of the Belridge Bulls.
Evan AKA “The Machine.” Evan was the engine room of the team, covering every inch of the court. He netted some baskets, but best of all, Evan played his role as Centre, picking up key rebounds and getting the ball down court. Evan was awarded for his efforts by winning the Sportsmanship Award for his team. Well done Evan and well deserved.
Marcus AKA “All Star.” Yes, Marcus was an All Star. Not only did Marcus score the most points from a Belridge player (26 points in total), he was also selected to play against five Wildcat Players in the end of the day “All Star” game. In this game, Marcus played against current Wildcat players Jesse Wagstaff (Wildcats Captain), David Okwera (ex. Belridge students), Alexandre Sarr, Michael Harris, and Tai Webster. Mr Mac put Marcus’s performance in this game perfectly, he said “the Wildcat players showed off, but Marcus showed up.” Marcus finished this game with two ‘swish’ free throws and a genuine steal of the ball off a Wildcat player. Congratulations Marcus, exception!
Jaxson was named “Captain Courageous” after taking a big hit in Game Two. In true captain style, Jaxon took a moment, dusted himself off and got back out on court without a word. This act of maturity showed real leadership, confirming that Jaxon’s selection as Captain for Unit Kobe was the right choice. Along side this, Jaxon worked his socks off, up and down the court, passing off to other players to shoot, and chipping in on the scoreboard himself. Well done, Jaxon, you were all class.
Euen AKA “The Go-To player”. Whether we needed a strong start, an explosive finish or someone to steady the ship at half time, Euen was the man. He played all over the court, providing strong defence, direct passing and attacking flare. You were fantastic Euen and a pleasure to have in the team!
James AKA “The King of The Court”. James was everywhere! He was picking up rebounds, hustling for the ball mid-court, and nailing twos at the attack end. In Game Three, James went on a scoring spree, netting 6 points, one basket after another. Great stuff James!
Judd Solomon, AKA “Batman’s Utility Belt”. Judd was knighted this name as there wasn’t anything Judd couldn’t do! He was up winning defence rebounds, dribbling down court, taking on opponents, making passes, driving to the basket, and helping to add to the team’s tally. Even a knock to his lip wasn’t stopping him owning the court. Well in Judd, super effort!
James AKA “MJ (Michael Jordan).” James loved scoring baskets and was our go-to player under the ring. James used his height to his advantage, netting key points in close games. Great effort James!
Finally, a huge thank you must go to the following staff members:
A massive thank you to Mr Steven “The Scorer” McMahon. Mr McMahon not only allowed most of his class to come and play for the day, but he also scored every game. Without a scorer, the students didn’t know how the game was going, and helped the team manage players coming on and off. Thank you for everything Mr McMahon!
A huge thank you goes to Mrs “Photoshop” R, who not only had to put up with a bunch of sweaty boys, but took photos the whole day, capturing all the highlights. The photos you took will be fond memories for all the players! PS: thank you for bringing the lollies too! Yum!
Last but certainly not least, a very big thank you goes to Mr “BIG” AJ Mac. With Mr Mac being a basketball legend himself, he passed on all his experience and knowledge of the game to the players. He set drills for the players to run, gave them help to play their positions, and provided valuable on-the-court instructions. As if this wasn’t enough, Mr Mac also refereed every game Belridge played, and without him, we wouldn’t have had an official to help manage to game. A huge thank you from all of us.
… And that is all folks. So, as you can see, a brilliant day was had by all. Basketball training at school will continue, and we will be looking out for future carnival such as this one, that we can be a part of.
Until next time,
Belridge Bulls…

Welcome back to Term 3, a term with many exciting events. With Book Week and the Athletics Carnival coming up in the second half of the term it is going to be an exciting time. But first, let's look at some of the fun activities 7-1 have done so far.
Students have been working hard on working together and being more social during classroom activities. This has included taking turns, working with other class members and answering questions in a group. As part of this move towards improving social skills, the students have also been practicing following the correct steps to wash hands and keep clean.
At the beginning of the year, students found it a little challenging to all sit together and join in with a whole class activity. Now, it has become a part of their daily routine. They love doing whole class reading, interactive whiteboard games as well as group instrument playing in Music. The students in class 7-1 have done an amazing job at working on their social skills. These skills will be helpful in the upcoming whole school Athletics Carnival (September 1st). The 7-1 team are looking forward to this exciting event.

7-2
7-2 have had a great start to Term 3.
We have some budding chefs in the class and have really enjoyed cooking on a Monday. The students have loved eating their delicious meals and so have the staff.
We have been doing coding lessons this term, watch out Elon Musk we have some real tech savvy students in 7-2. In D&T students are making a beautiful platter and candle holders and have really enjoyed doing this.
We are currently in training for the upcoming sports carnival, and the students have excelled in long jump and shot put, we have some future Olympians in 7-2, so watch this space!
In Music we have been fine tuning our guitar skills and learning to play 'Smoke on the Water.' In Maths students have been working hard to learn all about money management. In English we have been practising on expanding our language and writing descriptive sentences.
We are halfway through the term already and looking forward to the exciting things to come.
Thanks

We have had an amazing start to Term 3, with many celebrations. We have started new topics in History and Science, and we have begun a Cooking and Sewing program. We are still enjoying Music, Design and Technology and Art. We are also practicing hard for the Athletics Carnival.
Our class participated in the Science Week challenge and created a robot teacher, thank you to all of our families who donated recycled items to the cause. We were very proud to represent our school along with our class buddies next door in the final presentation. A very happy 2nd place to our team and school.
We have celebrated 100 days in High School by completing a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) activities based on the number 100. Everyone had a great day with lots of fun. There was lots of team work and communication to complete the activities.

The students have settled into Semester 2 with ease.
They are learning to program robots in Digital Technologies and have enjoyed dressing up to participate in Dance lessons. Home Economics has already produced some delicious concoctions, Ham and Cheese Toasties, which was just as enjoyable to eat as they were to make and Fruit Smoothies.
Their work in class has also been lots of fun. We have been learning about Medieval Europe in History, this involved a lesson where we went outside and learned to Joust, the students enjoyed this a little too much!
We have been lucky enough to have some new markings painted on the floors around school. We worked our way around a maze and had a game of giant Snakes and Ladders.
There is a lot happening this Semester, we have the Athletics Carnival fast approaching and Market Day in November.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Term 3 is off to a terrific start for the students and staff of 8-2!
Thank you all for a very warm welcome. My focus was to create a positive, safe and engaging learning environment for your children, and they have all responded positively to this. Everyone has quickly settled into new routines and completed a high quality of work across all learning areas.
In English, we have begun our creative writing unit of work, our literacy rotations are up and running, and we are using a range of technologies to share our ideas and perspectives across different topics. This has closely linked with Health, where we discuss the importance of being assertive, but also listening to others and being aware of how they are feeling.
Our class has been learning about the difference between rocks, crystals and minerals in Science, we have even grown our very own crystals! I have loved seeing students develop their conceptual understanding about what Earth is made up of and its many wonders.
We have also been working towards some important life skills in Maths, including budgeting, exploring different ways to pay, rounding total costs to the nearest 5c when paying in cash, and discussing the importance of learning these money skills. I am very proud of the growth I have seen from each student already, Well Done!
Cooking is always a class favourite and we have been cooking up a storm each Tuesday afternoon. Another favourite is Digital Technologies where we are developing coding skills to follow and create algorithms to solve problems using BlueBots.
I am looking forward to seeing students kick more goals over the next few weeks.
Take care,
Miss Hughes, Miss R and Mrs Beattie
8-3
We had an exciting start to Term 3. Firstly, there were a few changes to staff, we welcomed Mr Nethercott and Ms Alban to our classroom, but sadly lost Ms Gellard to another classroom. The students have taken this is their stride and have settled in beautifully with our new team.
Secondly, we entered two competitions this term. The first competition was for Plastic Free Day where the students had to come up with an idea on how we can tackle plastic waste to create a cleaner, brighter future and win a sustainable lunch pack. To our joy, Luke Hall from our classroom took the prize for middle school. Well done Luke we are so proud of you!
The second competition was for the Science Week Challenge (14th – 18th August) where we had to design a Robot Teacher to teach the class in case of staff shortages. This was a whole class challenge and the students have been hard at it, working to design and make the robot and create an advertisement to show case all its functions.
Until next time, take care and keep safe!

What an awesome start to Term 3!
We have started a few new topics across curriculum areas for this semester. In HASS, we are studying Geography and Economics and Business - what appear to be the two close favourites after History. While in Science, we are studying Physical and Earth Sciences which aligns with our studies in Geography.
Science Week 2023 – I must commend the students of 9-2 on how well they worked together in their groups to create their robot teachers. The thoughtfulness and insight that went into planning their project was amazing then to see this translated into their build phase using recycled materials. GREAT WORK 9.2!
Home Economics with Miss Robinson on Monday continues to deliver on the delicious food – this term the class have made fruit crumble, pita bread pizza, chilli con carne, chicken noodle soup and toasties. D&T on Tuesday and Friday has students making key hooks where they have each chosen designs to be burnt into the wood – looking forward to see how these turn out!
Great start to Term 3, 9-2! Excited to see what the remainder of the year has in store for us.
Katherine Vales
9-3
Term 3 has started on a high note with the class. After a well-deserved break 9-3 students are once again ready to work.
They have really come out of their shells this term as demonstrated by the discussions that can be heard each day. Students continue to support each other in class, social and practical tasks. Some help others with spelling, maths problems or answering question on taks. They are all keen to help each other out.
In English, students have been learning about verbs, adverbs and using different Tenses. Students were very excited to start on Tallies and graphing this term, they have been creating surveys and going around classes to collect data. In HASS we have had an awesome start to learning about communication across different platforms and through the past. In Health we have been learning about social media and working in groups to learn more about how to be safe online. Science is always the favourite, this term our focus is on tectonic plates and students are excelling at this. We are looking forward to creating earthquake proof buildings and volcanoes this term.
Our Year 9-3 students also participated in the Robot Teacher Challenge and made an awesome robot (ART) which they would sell for a quarter of a million!
Overall, the class has settled in well and we look forward to a great Term 3!

MAG 1
It has been a fantastic start to Term 3 for our MAG 1 class. This term has found students experience some changes with the introduction of a new classroom teacher and changes in their daily routine. Students have taken to staff and timetable changes extremely well and have settled into Term 3 with ease. The staff have been working extremely hard to ensure students are engaged in their learning and working towards their semester two goals. As a class we look forward to daily sessions where we come together as a class around the ‘Jelly-bean’ table to engage in shared book experiences and social experiences. We have been working hard on achieving individual literacy goals where students can engage in social activities and songs while also incorporating the use of their individual AAC devices.
Our numeracy block is coming along nicely with the use of manipulates and hands on experiences to support the understanding of mathematical concepts. Students are making great progress and enjoying the learning process along the way. For Science this semester we are learning about the tectonic plates and layers of the earth. We are also going to be building volcanoes which explode which I know the students will really enjoy.
For Art we will be exploring water colour paints and acrylics in order to learn about colour and contrast concepts. I have also planned a semester of cooking activities which will focus on skills to improve independence in the kitchen, safety in the kitchen, following a recipe, cleaning skills as well conversational skills. We have also booked sessions in our school garden. Whilst in the garden students will engage in using gardening tools appropriately and with purpose. We have planted some basil seedlings and have begun to cook various delightful dishes, including pizza, pigs in blankets and pancakes. The best part of cooking is the eating of course! We are looking forward to a productive term, filled with lots of learning and laughs!
MAG 1 Team
MAG 2
MAG2 have had a fantastic start to the term.
The students made banana pancakes as their first recipe from the FEAST program. FEAST stands for Food Education and Sustainability Training. We have modified some of our recipes from the ASDAN module: Meal Preparation and Cooking by using some of the tips from the FEAST program. Jarrah has made his own healthy recipes and Massimo has contributed some family recipes to make a class cookbook to be sold at Market Day next term.
To celebrate Plastic Free Day, Jarrah and Michael took part in a Planeteer QR code question hunt in which they navigated the school to find and answer questions about the environment. Mr Malloy rewarded the boys with an Eco Warrior trophy for their awesome effort.
The boys are excited to be back at Zone Bowling and often say hello to previous students from Belridge. They analyze their bowling scores the week after to determine who got the top score, the most strikes and progress made with their own individual scores.
Massimo celebrated his 18th birthday with 12-2 joining us to sing 'Happy Birthday' and share some cake.

Firstly, I wanted to acknowledge the parents, staff, students, friends and family who all attended the end of term Morning Tea. Students were amazing hosts and showcased their wonderful talents in the kitchen. Celebrating Australian culture whilst utilising Indigenous Australian ingredients proved to be a welcomed, relaxing send off to the term.
This semester our focus has continued with a class favourite of cooking; this time encompassing the world and hoping to create some variety to our dishes.
In English, students have been busy working on story writing using characterisation, news retells, spelling, recipe writing and reading the book "The Witches" by Roald Dahl. Book Week Dress Up Day provided lots of discussion in class. Students were telling me ideas of what they would like to come as. We had a couple of competitions running on the day for the best dressed and Book Week colouring in competition.
Our Community Access trips out to HBF Arena to participate in fitness have been fantastic and well enjoyed by all. Everyone participated with enthusiasm and showed respectful interactions with their trainer and out in the community.
Looking forward to the Athletics Carnival - we have been practicing when the sun is out!
Keep up the wonderful work!
From Iffah Doyle and the 10-1 Team 😊

Another wonderful start to the term, for the always impressive 11-1 class. The students have done amazing work on saving and protecting the environment on the Coastal Care program and are now moving onto their new placements for Semester Two.
Work skills - Riley and Thaya
"We have been practising different work skills like sorting pamphlets, working in the garden, helping out in Cobra Cafe and helping out with some canteen jobs."
IKEA - Grace, Sari and Jayden
"We like working at IKEA".
Jayden - "I like sorting the pencils with my favourite EA, Mrs Galupo."
Sari - "I like cleaning and wiping down the tables".
Grace - "I like working in the kitchen".
SCOUTS WA Recycling - Abi and Jada
"At Scouts WA Recycling we get all the cans and bottles, we wheel them to the compactor to be crushed. We also clean the tables that the bottles are sorted on. This is a messy job but very important because it is helping the the environment and raises money for the scouts".
The class also worked hard on their entry in the Belridge Science Week Competition. The talented 11-1 designed and created a robot teacher with amazing features like being made from recycled materials, having solar panels to be sustainable, extra arms to help more kids and super hearing so it can hear anyone who needs help.
Stay tuned and watch this space .
Keep up the great work 11-1.
Simon Malloy and Team 11-1

Kaya, Wow what a busy start to Term Three 11-2 has had! We can’t believe it is week 5. Our big news is that four of our students have started a school-based traineeship at GMS training Academy, in Malaga. This is an 18-month course which when completed the students will achieve a Cert II Supply Chain Operations. The students are out of school two days each week travelling independently (or as arranged by their family) to GMS. Students spend half their time each day in training and the second half of the day they work in the warehouse. As it is a traineeship, students are paid for the time when they are working which has been a wonderful learning experience about finances.
Hayden and Darian have started a new work placement for semester 2 at Mullaloo Coastal Care. They have enjoyed being near the ocean in the open, although they had to miss this week due to the extremely heavy rain. Here are the boys with a big pile of weeds that have removed from the dunes. Chrystal has started a new placement at the Belridge canteen where she has been busy cooking up pizzas and cheesies.
In this very busy term, we have also had two excursions. The first to the Career Expo, at the Perth Convention Centre, which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience where we learnt about all the different career options and industries in preparation for leaving school at the end of next year. The second excursion, with 11-1, was a DFES trip to Kings Park to complete an orienteering circuit. This was a fun day for all involved and we all managed to find our way back to base.
On top of al these activities we continue to complete lots of schoolwork. We are looking forward to the Year 11 River Cruise at the end of this term.

As we start our last semester of high school, students are nearing the end of their ASDAN module work. The class will be finalising all modules and putting the finishing touches on their work and files before Internal Moderation in Week 6. Once through this process students will be able to make any changes or corrections required before their work is submitted for External/State Moderation in September. All students have worked so hard across all 4 modules and it is pleasing to see their efforts reflected in their work files.
Well done 12-1!!
The class business continues to run, raising much needed funds for the Guide Dogs WA. The weather has hampered the Car Washing at times but when able to the students do an excellent job. So far the class has raised $250.00 for an excellent cause.
WPL has commenced for Semester Two with most students in new placements. We look forward to honing our work skills over the next few months in readiness for finishing school.
In DFES classes we have finished our First Aid lessons and are all excellent at knowing in an emergency we must call Triple Zero. The module on Fire and Prevention has begun and the Year 12's were able to visit the Wanneroo Fire Station and learn how firefighters go about their important job of protecting the community.
It is great to see students starting to show a greater level of maturity and showing their initiative when familiar tasks are required. Well done!
We look forward to a busy and enjoyable term in 12-1.

12-2
Our class had a busy end to Term 2, with an excursion to Mundaring with DFES on understanding the Deadly and Dangerous animals in our environment. It was a beautiful day in glorious Perth bushland, enjoyed by all.
We also had a sad, but special farewell on our last day of Term 2 to our wonderful EA Vicki McEvoy who retired. Vicki has supported all our students in the Cobra Cafe and in their Workplace Learning. We had a few songs on the karaoke machine to send Mrs Mc off.
In our final ASDAN Citizenship unit this term we have been investigating the post WW2 migration to Australia. Students chose a country and have looked at how the numbers and percentages of migrants have changed over fifty years from a selection of countries including: China, Germany, India, Lebanon, Italy, Greece, and Iraq. Students read stories of some of the migrants from their countries or interviewed family members. They created storyboards of movies they could make about the migrants.
We have also linked this study to our cooking in Cobra Cafe this term and will make some of the meals of these migrant groups. We have already cooked Spanakopita from Greece, Chicken Biryani from India and Lasagne from Italy. Yum!
In our Certificate II studies, students have completed units on filling in forms as well as interacting effectively with others in the workplace. Our class have also started their workplace learning for Semester II, with placements at IKEA, PetStock and Good Sammy's as well as new opportunities at the Cuddly Animal Farm and Rebel Sport.
We are all looking forward to a very busy and exciting Term 3.
