Well, there is nothing like a snow day the day after we return from vacation! We always welcome fresh snow on the playground, as it gives students plenty of opportunities to play. It's especially nice in late winter, when the sun is higher and the days are warmer.

Thank you families, for helping your child participate in our Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Because of the snow day, we don't have a final total at this time, but I anticipate a good result. It was a really fun way to wrap up the week before vacation. Students were so engrossed in their reading that the building was eerily quiet! Again, many thanks to our PTA for helping with making and delivering our special treat.

If you can believe it, our second trimester ends on March 10th! Teachers are finalizing assessments and getting prepared for conferences near the end of the month. Classroom teachers will begin sending home information on signing up for conference. Evening conferences will be held on Thursday, March 23rd.

Our Jump Rope For Heart event took place during your child’s PE class March 1-3. Your child learned about the importance of doing cardio exercises, such as rope jumping, for a healthy heart! They used both short and long jump ropes with some challenges mixed in. Pledge forms for anyone wanting to donate to the American Heart Association (AHA) were sent home with your child prior to vacation, but donating was not required to participate. Please return them or go online if donating (make checks payable to: the American Heart Association). Donations must be turned in no later than Friday, March 24th. Thanks to all our PES families, we are still tallying our results. It was impressive how much reading our students accomplished. If you have pledge sheets and money to turn in, please do so, in order to wrap it up. Any checks should be made out to Phippsburg Elementary School or PES. Thank you for your generous support.

The Bath Area Backpack Program is a local organization that provides snacks at school and supplemental meals for home throughout RSU1. Their aim is to make your life a little easier. PES would like to invite your child to be a part of this program. Feel free to try out the Backpack Program, and opt out if it doesn’t suit your family’s needs. Please contact Terry McCartney by email at tmccartney@rsu1.org or 389-1514 to sign up.

Do you, or someone you know, have a child living in Phippsburg that will be five by October 15th? If so, they are eligible for our full-day kindergarten class. Please call Mrs. Doran at 389-1514, and we'll add them to the list for this fall, and contact you when we schedule Parent Information Night and Kindergarten registration and screening. Advance notice helps us to ensure we have enough materials. We look forward to assisting you.

PES holds a marine permit and is looking for saltwater creatures for our touch tank. If you are still fishing, and you happen to catch a small sea creature (fish, starfish, small crabs, hermit crabs, sea urchins, sand dollars, clams, mussels, sea cucumber, etc.) we'd love some for observation in the school's tank!

The next 8-week K-5 Mad Science before school program begins April 5th and ends May 31st. If your child is interested in participating in Mad Science's Secret Agent Lab program, please register online at maine.madscience.org by March 24th. We need a minimum of 10 students to hold the program at PES (parents provide transportation to school on these Wednesdays). Scholarships are available; if interested, please contact Mrs. Doran at 389-1514 by March 24th. See FLYER for details.

Your PTA is looking for someone to fill the role of Treasurer at the end of this school year. This individual should be detail oriented, able to work numbers, balance a checkbook, and pass a basic background check. Attending PTA meetings is NOT a requirement.
