Principal's Message

Sunny Heights Families,

The Warren Early Childhood Center is partnering with the Indianapolis Urban League to offer a program, Read and Rise, to our parent community. The foundation of the program is aimed at promoting reading and literacy development in the home. Their mission is to reinforce that parents are a child's first and most important teacher.

ECC will host three family literacy workshops as outlined below:

Thursday, April 25; 6:00-7:15 p.m.- Focus on Birth to Age 4

Thursday, May 9; 6:00-7:15 p.m.- Focus on Kindergarten and 1st Grade, up to age 7

Thursday, May 23; 6:00-7:15 p.m.- Focus on 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade, up to age 9

IUL teaches the workshops, provides dinner, how-to guides for parents and reading materials for children. ECC will provide child care for families whom would otherwise not be able to attend.

If you come by school in the next few days, check out the Lost and Found table in the front office area to see if any of your child's items may have made it there. All items that remain will be taken to a charity for others in need to use on Friday, April 19th.

ATTENTION 2nd & 3rd Graders

Sunny Heights Science Olympiad

Join us!

MSD Warren Township is starting Science Olympiad at the elementary level! Currently, the team from Raymond Park is going to the National Competition!

What is it? Science Olympiad is a competition in which students compete in various areas of science such as Earth Science, Biology, and Engineering. (It is not Chemistry, aka potions, at the elementary level.)

We will meet to choose and work on projects on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:45 to 8:30. Practice/work sessions will be: 4/11, 4/16, 4/18, 4/23, 4/25, 4/30, 5/2, & 5/7. The competition will be held at Raymond Park Middle School on May 8th, time TBD.

PTA Presents......Popcornopolis!!

April 1st – April 17th Sunny Heights students will be selling Popcornopolis popcorn. Money and orders are due on Wednesday, April 17th (CASH Only). Popcorn should arrive by mid-May.

The flavor selection will be these five:

Caramel, Jalapeno Cheddar, Kettle Corn, Unicorn and Zebra

Prices will range from $7 - $39.

There will be prizes for each student who participates!

Take Charge of Your Digital Life

Digital Families Community Event – Monday April 22nd at 6pm

Located at the MSD Warren Township Administration Building at 975 N. Post Road

Dear Warren Township Families,

Raising children in the age of smartphones and social media brings new challenges and concerns for all families. That is why we are inviting you to join the Warren Township Council of PTAs at 6 pm in the MSD Warren Township Administration Building located at 975 N. Post Road for our Digital Families Community Event. This event will promote safer and more responsible use of online technology among children and families.

During this event your family will learn together about the importance of digital safety and online behavior through various workshops (Healthy Habits, Online Presence, Password Strategies, Privacy and You, Building Empathy, Family Tech Talk, and Ask a Student Center). Some of the things you can expect to talk about are password security, online communication, and how to be a connected as a family online. 98% of kids 8 years and younger have access to a smart device. It's important that our families know how to keep each other safe and be the best versions of ourselves online. We hope to see you on April 22nd to get the conversation started! Pizza and drinks will be provided at the event. Raffle Prizes will also be awarded! Please RSVP using the form below or through our Facebook page "Warren Township Council of PTAs".

Warren Township School District has a new app and website! The purpose of the app and website is to provide regular updates through the live feed, district news, and

district events sections as well as other important district information. The app includes easy access to the weekly breakfast and lunch menu, staff contacts, district documents, bullying and safety reporting form, and much much more. Looking for talented students at SH!

Looking for talented students to perform in the Sunny Heights Talent Show. Can you sing, dance, juggle, twirl a baton? If so, you can show off your talents on May 17th at the Sunny Heights Talent Show. A flyer will be coming home next week with more information.

ILEARN ASSESSMENT

3rd and 4th graders will take the new statewide assessment called ILEARN. This is the assessment that has replaced ISTEP. The ILEARN testing window opens on Monday, April 22nd. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students and assesses the areas of Language Arts and Math. Fourth grade will have additional Science assessment that they will complete. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - MONDAY, JUNE 3RD

Monday, June 3rd is Warren Township's last day of the regular school year (barring no further

weather closings). This date has been extended due to the following weather closings: November 15th and January 30th. All students will be dismissed early on this day.

Grades 5 - 12 will be dismissed at 1:30 pm

Grades K-4 will be dismissed at 2:30 pm

Lunch balances

If a student has accrued a substantial balance, the student will be provided a choice of two alternate meals at a reduced rate of $0.50. Parents may check student account balances by using the link provided to the Lunch Parent Portal.

A NOTE FROM NURSE ROBERTA

Flu season is here. Your child's health is very important. Sometimes it's hard to tell if your child has the flu. Common symptoms include coughing, fever and chills. A fever can increase in just a few hours to very high levels. If your child is sick it is very important to keep them hydrated. Some examples include: water, Popsicles, juice, Pedialyte and Gatorade. Children, elderly and anyone who has chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more at risk from the flu. Flu can go into pneumonia which can be very dangerous. A child does not have to look sick to be sick. I am here as a resource for you. If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call at 317-532-2903.

CLASSROOM VISITS

In an effort to keep all children safe, anyone wanting to visit the classroom, have lunch with a child, and/or go on field trips must come to the school office to complete a background check. Please bring ID at that time. Visits are limited to 15 min. throughout the day. During those 15 min., parents are not able to talk with teachers. We do not want to interrupt class time. If you would like to meet with the teacher, schedule a meeting with the teacher prior to your visiting the school.

It is never to late to join our PTA. Joining the PTA allows you and your family to meet some great people. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, to build a rapport and discuss issues that are on your mind. $7.00 is all it takes to become a member. Please ask your child's teacher for more information.
