BHS Bucks Principal's Update
April 2021
Dear BHS Bucks students and families,
Returning from spring break is always tough, for both students and teachers. Although you might think that having a vacation should make it easier to come back to school, in fact, it is just the opposite. Our routines have been disturbed, the sun calls to us, and the school year is later than ever this year, making the last few months of school last a lifetime. Compiling to this, our state requires that we test our kids the week after our county calendar puts us on vacation. It's not ideal, but we will get through it, like every other year. After all, if anything, this last year has taught us to be resilient and take things in stride. However, we do need your help in getting students to school, even when they are unmotivated and don't want to get out of bed.
I am so proud of our staff and students for not giving up in what seems like insurmountable obstacles. I am proud that we have come together to support or school family and community. I am proud that we have so many students excelling in an unprecedented age of education. I am proud of my staff who have gone above and beyond their classroom walls to connect with students and support them in their time of need. I am so thankful for all of the blessings that surround me, the students, and the staff at Buchanan High School.
Together, we are #BUCKSTRONG!
April ICE Schedule
Assessment Update
Our juniors are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to participate in the MME (Michigan Merit Exam) that is comprised of three different tests on three different days. All juniors will take the SAT on Tuesday, April 13th, WorkKeys on the 14th, and M-Step (Science and Social Studies) on the 20th. Due to the rigors of the junior testing, they will be allowed to leave school once they have finished and given their best efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 13 & 14th.
8th grade students will test once again at the end of April (27th and 28th) for the M-Step (Science and Social Studies), and again in May when they take the NWEA test for the last time this year.
We understand that none of these tests are ideal when we have missed so much learning this year due to closures, quarantine and remote learning. We will do the best we can to accommodate student needs while complying with the demands of our state mandates. However, we hope you will help us in being supportive of your students no matter what the test outcomes. They have gone through a lot this year (and last year) and quite frankly, these test scores don't determine what is truly important; who they are as people. We hope that they do their best and move on, and put this year in the books, leaving only a memory of what it was like to live through a pandemic.
Summer School
HIGH SCHOOL
Due to the large amount of course failures, Buchanan High School will once again offer summer school for students who need to recover credits due to failed courses over the year. This is a great opportunity for students to keep the pace and earn credits to be able to graduate with their class. The district has applied for grant funds to help pay for this cost. Courses will be online using the Edmentum platform. All courses will be made available free of charge.8th GRADE
We will offer an in-person 8th grade summer school that will focus on English and Math. Any student who has failed two or more semester courses in a core area will be retained. Students who failed a class during the first or second semester of 8th grade are strongly encouraged to attend.

Published in the New York Times!
Well, our own senior Serynn Nowlin is a FINALIST! Her work, along with only 29 other students across the nation, was featured in a special PRINT edition of the New York Times and she's also receiving $100 for her work (they don't typically pay students AND this is the first-ever section entirely devoted to teen work AND they typically only publish the winners on the Learning Network online). She wrote a found poem and a narrative and they chose the narrative that was written about participating in Buchanan's BLM March. The found poem was a collection of lines from her journals throughout 2020. Mrs. Neal says that both are fantastic!
In Mrs. Neal's classroom, students study past winners of the contests during mentor text study and analyze author's craft. She is so excited and can't believe that students across the U.S. will be studying Serynn's work for author's craft in the years to come.
We are so happy and extremely proud of her! You can read an article about it in our local news by clicking this link. https://leaderpub.com/2021/03/17/buchanan-high-school-student-named-featured-finalist-in-new-york-times-writing-contest/
