AV News From Mrs. Blaney
August, 2023
Dear Families,
Our staff started the year with a sunflower theme. On a cloudy or rainy day, sunflowers turn toward each other to share their energy. The sunflower is a symbol of strength, stability, and loyalty. By supporting one another, we gain the stability to help those around us. That's our goal here at Arroyo Vista Elementary. We are here to help. We are here to serve.
The school year is off to a great start! Students are in the full swing of the school year. They are enjoying their new classrooms, schedules, teachers, and friends. This newsletter will share some of the events of the past month and give you a preview of what to expect in September.
Sincerely,
Emily

Updates
Second Step Monthly Character Traits
AV uses the Second Step curriculum to deliver Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to students in their classrooms. We also have school wide themes called character traits. This month, the character trait includes three parts: being safe, being respectful, and being responsible. We want our school to be a welcoming place where every student feels like they belong. On Friday, September 1, the Wildcat Virtual Assembly will include an introduction to this trait as well as reminders to students of our school rules.
Leadership Opportunity for AV Parents
If you are interested in serving on the Arroyo Vista School Site Council, please email me at eblaney@spusd.net with the following information by Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 PM. I will use this information on a ballot so that all Arroyo Vista parents can make an informed decision when they cast their vote.
1) Your Name
2) Short biography of 3-5 sentences to include why you want to represent AV families on the site council
3) Name and Grade of Child(ren) at Arroyo Vista
4) Telephone #
The first School Site Council Virtual Meeting will be Wednesday, September 27 at 3:15 PM.
Staying Comfortable in This Heat
We use the Heat Index pictured above. Students are reminded to drink lots of water. They should be wearing sunscreen and light-colored clothing, and they should bring water bottles. Please label the water bottles with student names.
COVID Protocols
SPUSD follows the LACDPH guidelines regarding COVID-19. Therefore, families are no longer required to notify the school when a child tests positive. However, when the school is notified about a COVID case, the health office notifies the teacher, but SPUSD is not required to notify all families and must not share any identifying information about particular students.
We practice environmental mitigation measures like HVAC, cleaning, daily cleaning by our custodial staff, and encouraging hand sanitizer and hand washing. It is helpful for parents to look at the county data about transmission trends in general if you wish to take extra personal measures.
If you have questions about returning to school/work after having COVID-19, please follow these LA County Guidelines for Isolation
PTA Reflections Contest
Reflections is a National PTA experience in which students can share their talents of dance, literature, music composition, photography, visual arts, and film production. The theme this year is "I am hopeful because...". It's a lovely theme, and I can't wait to see what our students create! We celebrate all entries and make the students feel special if they participate. Please encourage your children to do so!
