Paw Prints Family Newsletter

January 12, 2024 -Vol 2 Issue 9
Principal's Message
Dear GNBVT Families,
I hope this Paw Prints Newsletter finds you in good health and high spirits despite the challenges that life often throws our way. Today, I write to you with a heavy heart, as our school community mourns the loss of one of our own, Jacob Pothier. It is never easy to navigate through such moments, but it is in times like these that the strength of our community truly shines.
Over the past week, our dedicated Guidance and School Adjustment Counselors, along with our compassionate teachers, staff, faculty, and administration, have worked tirelessly to provide support to those students who have been most deeply affected by Jacob's passing. Throughout this week we have used our Student Forum as a space for healing and reflection, fostering an environment where our students can find solace in the midst of grief.
As a father of three teenagers, each around Jacob's age, I cannot help but empathize with the pain that his parents and family members are going through. In the face of unimaginable loss, they are showing tremendous strength and resilience to keep their family together during this challenging time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we stand united as a school community to offer our unwavering support.
Tonight, we have the opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate Jacob's life and legacy. Our girls' basketball game at 5:00 pm and boys' basketball game at 6:30 pm, both against Sturgis West, will be played in Jacob's honor right here at GNBVT. The entire admission proceeds from these games will contribute to a scholarship established in Jacob's name, a fitting tribute to a vibrant young soul who left an indelible mark on our hearts.
I am confident that Jacob, with his larger-than-life personality, is rocking the heavens, and his memory will continue to inspire us all.
May he rest in peace.
Warm regards,
Principal Williams

Reminder of Student Technology Use Policy
Located in the Student Handbook:
STUDENT TECHNOLOGY USE POLICY
GNB Voc-Tech provides technology resources to its students to
promote educational excellence in the school by
facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication
with the support and supervision of the
administration. The use of technology is a privilege, not a right.
With global access to resources across the Internet comes the
possibility of material that may not be considered
to be of educational value in the context of a school setting;
GNB Voc-Tech firmly believes that the value of
information, interaction, and research capabilities available
outweighs the possibilities that students may obtain
material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the
district.
Proper behavior, as it relates to the use of computers, is no
different than proper behavior in all other aspects of
school activities. All students are expected to use the computers
and computer networks in a responsible,
ethical, and polite manner. This policy is intended to clarify
those expectations as they apply to computer and
network usage. Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary
action, a loss of computer privileges, and if
appropriate, legal action. Please read full policy here.
From the Health Office
COVID-19
As many are aware, COVID-19 remains within our communities.
If you are experiencing COVID-like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, headache, loss of taste and smell, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, you should test yourself for COVID. Symptoms can range from mild to severe.
If you test positive for COVID you should remain isolated for five days from the start of symptoms vs your positive test date. This day is considered Day Zero.
From there, count 5 days out and then you are able to stop isolating on Day 6 as long as you have an improvement of your symptoms and you are not taking medication to reduce a fever. The CDC recommends that individuals wear a mask through Day 10.
Please call the Health Center to speak to one of the nurses who can help clarify when you/your student can return to school. The nursing staff also works with the Attendance Office to ensure that absences related to COVID are excused. Please call our nursing staff to clarify any questions that you may have related to illness or absences.

You can find information related to COVID vaccinations at the following Mass.gov website:

Reminder--COVID Test Kits: The government is providing four free testing kits per household. Please see the link below to order if you are interested in obtaining these:
https://special.usps.com/testkits
The health center also does currently have a limited supply of test kits on hand should your student need to take one home. The nursing staff can provide these while supplies last.
Final REMINDER
Also previously shared for our senior class, YOG 2024, the Department of Public Health (DPH) is requiring high schools to report on the final status of meningococcal vaccinations. We ask that if you have not sent in proof of this vaccination in our last school year, please provide a copy at this time. We are required to report on this by the end of January 2024.
Flu Season:
As we head further into the flu season, consider getting a flu shot. The Centers for Disease Control recommends being vaccinated. While the flu vaccine does not always prevent the flu, it can help reduce the severe symptoms.
