Weekly Update February 25, 2021
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed the early start to the weekend. Let’s hope this is winter’s final push! March always brings the promise of spring and new beginnings. It is always a treat to watch the students as they observe the changing seasons. The children rush into school to report on the first flower they’ve seen poking through the soil, or the first butterfly spotted in our courtyard. And spring sports and outdoor activities are always welcomed and anticipated with so much excitement. Soon, we will also “spring ahead”, as we gain another hour of daylight on March 13th.
In addition to all that Mother Nature has in store for us, we are excited to welcome families into the building on March 9th and 10th for conferences. As a reminder, conferences are an adult event; and we will operate on an early release schedule each day. We can’t wait to celebrate all that your students have accomplished thus far. See you soon!
Classroom Tidbits:
Preschool- learners were taught that Q & U stick together. They learned how to write the letters Q & U and the sounds they make together and apart.
Kindergarten--students started the planning process for writing all about books.
Grade 1- writers were being brave when writing. They are practicing choosing a word that is the best fit even though it may not be the easiest to spell.
Grade 2- writers are learning about lab reports and completed an experiment together while filling out a science lab report with a question, hypothesis, materials, procedures, observations, and conclusion.
Grade 3- students are going through the writing process of revising and editing in effort to publish their opinion pieces.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Physical Education News
Hi Everyone!
It has been an exciting and action packed 2021- with no signs of letting up in 2022!
Pre K, K and Grade 1
With clear expectations, the children have the PE routine down to a science and they look better than ever. From stretching and exercises to jogging and fitness, the children have done an amazing job! Some of the activities we completed included jumping rope,, hula hoops, ball skills and cooperative games. Their jumping and coordination skills through jump ropes, jumping sticks and skip-its have been very impressive. We also continued to work on their gross motor skills such as skipping, galloping, and slides.
Grade 2 and 3
As always, our PE classes begin with a detailed and progressive warm-up, including prolonged cardio fitness exercise, either through activities or jogging. We continued with our ball skills, now into using our hands, while starting our beach ball volleyball unit. We focused on eye-hand coordination and various technical shots ( modified) and reaction time, as the children worked on their own against the wall and progressed to partner work, culminating with advanced play at the net ( modified height ). We will continue our beach ball volleyball unit until the second week of March. The children LOVE the beach ball volleyball unit.
Thank you for all your encouragement and support at home!

K-5 Math Program Update
The East Hampton Public Schools is deeply committed to providing our students with the best education possible in order for each student to be fully prepared for every level of schooling and ultimately for college and/or career. As we provide that high quality education, it is essential that our parents have information regarding educational programming. In the 2022-2023 school year, we anticipate a change to our core math resource at the K-5 level.
The last time the East Hampton Public Schools conducted a review of its core math resource was the 2015-2016 school year. At that time, our core math resource GO Math! was selected for implementation in our elementary classrooms. Your learner has worked with this program since they started school. The GO Math! Program, however, is being reissued by its publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The next version of the program is called Into Math. The transition of an elementary math program in our school district is something we consider very important and worthy of rigorous review. Rather than simply accept a revised version of the product, the East Hampton Public Schools is taking this opportunity to conduct a pilot of math materials.
It is critical that we pilot math materials in our classrooms in order to review the curriculum resources carefully, provide our own teachers the opportunity to assess the tool, and to observe our students’ comfort with the program design. Our pilot programs include Into Math, Bridges in Mathematics, and Illustrative Mathematics. Ultimately, our teachers provide instruction aligned to the Connecticut Core Standards in Mathematics as adopted by the State Board of Education. These resources are a tool to assist them in that process. Each child’s mathematics instruction is aligned to their grade level standards which is consistent across the grade level.
As we research math programming for the East Hampton Public Schools we will focus on instructional materials that meet the needs of our students and that represent best practices in mathematics instruction. We will analyze student performance data, teacher observations, and feedback from students to inform our decision-making process.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me to discuss them.
