Principal's Message

Greetings KP Community,

As we approach the end of Term 1 in just a few weeks (Term 1 ends November 3rd) please make sure you are checking in with your student's School Counselor (Guidance) if your student needs additional support.

Spotlight on School Counselors (no longer using the term Guidance):

"Historically, the term “guidance counselor” was used to refer to counselors working in the schools. This term has evolved to “school counselor” as the scope of duties has changed and evolved...the American School Counselor Association encourages the use of “school counselor” to more accurately reflect the role (ASCA)." In addition to leading classroom lessons that support future goals and assisting with post-secondary planning, school counselors have a myriad of other responsibilities. "They also use data to identify students at risk of dropping out, refer students for intensive mental health support and treatment, implement positive behavioral support programs, screen students for signs of suicide, and perform a host of other responsibilities that extend well beyond career development. That is, changes in the role have brought about comprehensive school counseling programs that are designed to support school culture and mission instead of focusing solely on delivering services to students. (Harvard Graduate School of Education)”

PSAT/NMSQT: KP students had the opportunity to participate in the first digital PSAT/NMSQT exam last Saturday. Scores should be available to students who took the exam in 4-6 weeks through their College Board account or through the BigFuture School mobile app, if students opted in on test day. Students can create a College Board account here.

Financial Aid Information Night: DECA student group Debt Defenders, in conjunction with the KP School Counseling Department, are hosting a MEFA Financial Aid Night on November 8th at 6pm in KPRHS in the Library. This event is free and open to all KP students and families. This presentation provides information and clarity on the entire college financial aid application process. Attendees will learn about financial aid applications and types of financial aid, the factors that determine your aid eligibility, how colleges determine the amount of aid to offer, and the details of financial aid offers.

The Semifinalists are in the running for 150 college scholarships worth $20,000.

College-Bound Seniors--Important Information

Requests for senior transcripts and counselor letters of recommendation have been pouring into the counseling office this fall. The counselors are working steadily to meet the needs of all KP students. Historically, KP has over 85% of our senior class apply to college and over 50% of seniors apply with an Early Action deadline within October and November!

Please remember, the counselors work backwards from college application deadlines. To ensure a smooth process in sending your supporting documents out in a timely manner, please be sure to complete the following steps:

  1. Seniors should join the Google Classroom for the Class of 2024 and check it often for information, resources and how-to’s. All steps below are explained in detail in the resources in the Google Classroom. Join Code: 6jk6iut.
  2. Junior Questionnaire in the Google Classroom must be completed for your counselor to write a letter of recommendation
  3. Senior Update Form in the Google Classroom must be completed for your counselor to know if you require a letter of recommendation from them
  4. List all your colleges in Naviance (regardless of application type: Common App, Direct to Institution, etc.)
  5. If using the Common Application, Match your Common App with Naviance.
  6. Request initial transcripts in Naviance
  7. Check application deadlines in Naviance–this is where the counselors see your application deadlines!
  8. Keep track of deadlines. You do not want to miss a deadline or turn in a late application--You DO NOT need to wait for your counselor to submit documents for you to submit your application. We recommend seniors submit applications prior to the application deadline.

Homecoming 2023 Homecoming 2023

Homecoming Reminders:

The dance begins at 7:00 pm and goes until 9:30pm. Entrance is at the bus lobby doors. All students must arrive by no later than 7:30 pm. If a student chooses to leave early, they may not reenter. If a student is under 16 and does not drive, a parent must come to the door for pick up if it's prior to 9pm.

All school rules apply. Please see page 118 in the student handbook.

We are looking forward to a very fun night!

Universal Free School Meals for All Students

Governor Healey and the Massachusetts Legislature have made Massachusetts the 8th state to make School Meals for All permanent, beginning immediately for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year! School meals will be offered at no cost to all students.

Free and Reduced Cost Meals Application

Please note that even though meals will be free for all, it is very important for families in need to still complete the household Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals for the 2023-2024 school year. This allows districts to establish eligibility for other federal benefits and school programs. Families who have been eligible for Free and Reduced Meals in the past must apply again for 2023-2024. Please know that the application is confidential with only the Director of Food Services and administrators having access. All students receive the same meals.

King Philip Free and Reduced Meals Application

For more information on the School Meals Program, please visit the food services page on the district's website, King Philip Schools Food Services Department.
