VEX Robotics World Championship
By Mr. Haiola
Last week our sixth grade robotics team participated in the Vex Robotics World Championships. They had the opportunity to meet teams from about forty five nations. Kanui and Noelle, along with other Native Hawaiian students represented Hawaii in the Parade of Nations. After four hundred and eight teams were divided among five divisions, our students competed for three days with eighty teams in the Technology division. After getting nicked by the jitterbugs, we sat in forty sixth place midway through our second day. After a strong finish to end the day, they moved up eighteenth place. After their final two drives on day three, they finished ranked twenty fourth out of eighty teams. Congratulations to the sixth grade team on a wonderful season. Thank you to their parents for your support. Also thank you to Pam Yamakawa and Nami Dolan for assisting our team.
May Calendar of Events
HPD Stranger Danger Presentations
Our Community Police partners were able to share a Stranger Danger presentation to all of our students in preschool to second grade. Their favorite part was yelling "stranger danger" and practice running in place.
Project Vision to Learn
Mahalo to David Dijos and everyone at Vision to Learn for providing our students with free glasses.
'AINA Chef Visit
Terri Langley was our 'AINA Chef this year. All of our students were able to participate in making their own banana pudding recipe with three simple ingredients. We are grateful that 'AINA in Schools was able to accommodate for all of our students to participate by coming to school two different days. Check out the recipe in the picture below.
First Grade: Field Trip to Manoa Heritage Center
By Mrs. Lee
1st graders went to Manoa Heritage Center on Friday, May 3rd. They learned about vermicomposting, played a plant memory game and toured the Kaahaaina Garden. There were so many connections they made on their visit from all the things theyʻve learned from Kumu in Hawaiian Studies and our Haleiwa community field trips. Please click on the picture below to watch a video of the 1st grade field trip.
Fourth Grade:
By Ms. Yonekura
The 4th Graders have been busy connecting to our Hawaiian Culture. We went to Na Mea Kupono for our 2nd learning cultural experience and prepared our own laulau. We made laulau with pork fat, meat, Hawaiian salt, kalo, and sweet potatoes. Kumu steamed it for us and we tasted our laulau back in school. They were very ʻono! Then, we went on a field trip to the Iʻolani Palace and Washington Place. Both of these places were home to Queen Liliuoʻkalani. We got to experience first hand where the aliʻi once lived. It was a mesmerizing experience! We also performed "Lili ʻUe" at Washington Place. After we returned to school we talked about what we saw at both places and wrote our own compare and contrast paragraphs. We didnʻt realize how many similarities both of these places share!
Fifth Grade Camp Erdman Field Trip
By Trustyn Ching, Kyrie Freitas, and Kaimana Mossman
On April 30th our 5th grade class went to Camp Erdman for a field trip. The class learned teamwork by working together and listening to each other. We also went on the alpine tower which helped some people to overcome their fears of heights and created goals for climbing as high as they could. During our hike, we learned about different types of plants and trees. And, we found crystals! In archery, we listened to our range commander to learn how to hold and aim our bows and arrows.
We wish we could have stayed the night, but it was a lot of fun!
Hawaiian Surfing Association State Championship
Congratulations to our 6th grader, Emma Falk, on taking 2nd place in the Hawaiian Surfing Association (HSA) State Championship held at Ala Moana Bowls. Emma competed in 3 rounds against girls from all over Hawaii in 2-3 foot surf. In a four person heat in the finals Emma caught 2 good waves, pushing her into second place. By placing second, she secured a spot in the USA National Surfing Championship that will be held in San Clemente, CA this summer. We wish her well at the national competition!
