Principal's Corner
Greetings Harvey Dunn Families,
Conferences will be held on the afternoon and evening of February 6th and the evening of February 9th. Conferences are a great time for teachers and parents to connect. It is an opportunity for teachers to share students' academic progress along with their social and emotional growth. You should have received an email from your child's classroom teacher regarding conferences with a link to sign up. If you have not seen the sign-up in your email inbox, reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
If you would like to connect with a Specials Teacher or Counselor, you can reach out to them via email below to schedule a time, or feel free to stop by their classroom to visit with them during conferences.

Counselor Corner
Hello, Harvey Dunn families!
As we head into the second semester, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind you of some of the resources available to support families in our community. If you have questions about these resources, or have needs in another area, please feel free to reach out to me via email at jamie.craghead@k12.sd.us, or at the main office number, 605-371-4120.
Feeding SD Backpack Program
Harvey Dunn partners with Feeding South Dakota to provide participating students a take-home bag of nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods over the weekend. Families can receive one bag of food per child at school, and can stop or start the program at any time during the year. If you are interested in enrolling, complete the digital enrollment at the link provided. You can also contact Mrs. Craghead directly. Backpack Program Enrollment: https://forms.gle/CqtxujwkALvdA5WK7
Mobile Food Distributions
Feeding SD also has mobile food distributions throughout Sioux Falls on a rotating schedule. Families are eligible to visit any of these sites one time per month to receive fresh and frozen produce, dairy, meat, bread, and non-perishable food items. See the Participation Form for schedule of dates and times below.
Community Engagement Center
The Sioux Falls School District's Community Engagement Center is located at the Axtell Park building at 201 West Avenue. This is a resource available for all school district families. They can provide winter coats and snow gear, socks and underwear, and school supplies. They have a Birthday Closet for families to utilize, computer access and assistance, and a variety of other resources they can connect families to. They have a food pantry that can be accessed once a month IN ADDITION to any other community food distribution or giveaway. See the flyer for details below.
Helpline Center
If there are other needs your family has, or you are looking to get connected to other resources around town, the Helpline Center is a great resource! You can call 211 to speak to someone who can direct you to what you're looking for, or you can visit their website for a wealth of information about resources for basic necessities, financial assistance, housing, transportation, mental health, and more. See this link to check out what they have to offer: https://www.helplinecenter.org/2-1-1/
Again, if you need help connecting to these programs or any other resources, please reach out to Mrs. Craghead at school! I am happy to help!

Random Acts of Kindness Week
Hy-Vee Reusable Bag Program
The Hy-Vee Reusable Bag Program has been extended through February. Harvey Dunn Elementary raised $45 during the month of January. Harvey Dunn Elementary School receives a $1 donation from each purchase of the $2.50 reusable red "My Heart" Bag at the Hy-Vee store located at Hy-Vee 1601 South Sycamore Avenue, Sioux Falls SD.
JA Volunteers - Thank You!
We want to extend a special thank you to the volunteers and teachers listed below who participated in Junior Achievement this school year. JA volunteers shared their knowledge with our students about careers, money, owning a business, and ethics. JA volunteers teach engaging and interactive lessons while sharing their career journey. We appreciated the time JA volunteers spend in the classroom making an impact!
National Mentoring Month - Thank You!
In January, we celebrated National Mentoring Month! We are so grateful for our community volunteers who donate their time and energy to our Harvey Dunn students through the LSS mentoring program.
If you want to know more about becoming a mentor, contact Mrs. Craghead, our school counselor, for more details!
Parking Lot Reminders
Students' safe arrival to and departure from school is a top priority. Please take time to review the reminders below. We are all here for the same reason, the children. When we all follow the guidelines during drop off, you help your child start their day off in a positive and safe manner, as well as the other families around you. Thank you for doing your part to make this process and procedure work.
- Park vehicles in the parking lot and walk students to and from the school using the crosswalks. If you are choosing to drop off students, use the circle drive or north drive.
- Only vehicles with handicap parking permits can park in the handicap spots.
- When pulling up in the circle drive or north drive before or after school remain in your vehicle and move forward as the line moves. This helps keep traffic moving.
- Students exit on the passenger side of the vehicle. In the circle drive, once you are in the student drop-off zone, students exit the vehicle. When more students are exiting the vehicles, we are able to move traffic through more efficiently.
- The north drive might be a faster alternative for morning drop-off when the circle drive is busy. Remain in your vehicle and move forward as the line moves. This helps keep traffic moving.
