Taylor Talk
Hey Wildcats,
I hope this Taylor Talk finds you well and brimming with the energy that comes from a rejuvenating holiday break. Welcome back! As we dive into the second semester, I want to extend a warm welcome and share my excitement for the incredible academic journey that lies ahead.
The past few weeks offered a chance to recharge and reflect on our goals, but now it's time to hit the ground running. Let's keep our noses to the grindstone and focus on personal academic achievements and growth.
Here are a few thoughts to inspire and guide you as we embark on this new chapter:
Set Personal Goals: Take a moment to think about what you want to achieve academically this semester. Whether it's mastering a challenging subject, improving your study habits, or aiming for higher grades, set clear and achievable goals for yourself.
Begin with the End in Mind: Envision the successful academic journey you want to experience by the end of the semester. What accomplishments do you see? What challenges have you overcome? Starting with a clear vision can help guide your actions and decisions along the way.
Embrace Challenges: Growth happens when we step out of our comfort zones. Don't be afraid to tackle challenging assignments or explore new topics. Each obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Time Management: Plan your time wisely to balance academics, extracurricular activities, and personal interests. A well-managed schedule is the key to staying on top of your studies while also enjoying a well-rounded life.
Seek Support: If you find yourself facing difficulties, remember that support is always available. Reach out to teachers, classmates, or counselors if you need guidance. We're all here to help you succeed.
Celebrate Achievements: Whether big or small, celebrate your achievements along the way. Recognize your hard work and accomplishments—it's a powerful motivator to keep pushing forward.
This semester is a canvas waiting for your unique story to unfold. Your dedication, resilience, and passion for learning will shape not only your academic journey but also your personal growth.
Remember, you have the potential to achieve remarkable things. Your efforts matter, and each step you take brings you closer to your goals. Begin with the end in mind! Seniors- graduation! Underclassmen- passing and exempting semester exams!
Let's make this semester one filled with personal triumphs and academic successes. Together, we'll create a learning environment where each of you can thrive and shine.
Here's to a fantastic and achievement-filled semester!
Mr. Taylor
West Limestone Report Card
The Alabama State Department revealed school report cards in December. West Limestone earned a 76. We are very disappointed with this score, but look forward to working together with students, parents, and the community to help increase our school next year. The score is determined by the following factors: academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, college & career ready indicators (CCRI), and chronic absenteeism. EL Proficiency is also an indicator.
Here's some more information on the report card factors: Academic achievement and growth looks at our ACAP and ACT scores. The ACT scores used are only the scores of last year's 11th graders who took the ACT at West in the spring. The graduation rate is determined by how many students in this year's cohort graduates. Cohorts start with each 9th grade class. CCRI is determined a number of ways but looks at how a student is either college or career ready. Chronic absenteeism is the percentage of students who have over 18 absences regardless of excused or unexcused. Students who have over 18 absences a school year affect our grade negatively. EL proficiency is determined by the proficiency of students who take the ACCESS test. These would be students who have English as a second language.
To help increase our score for West, we need everyone working towards a common vision. We are better together! We want West to be a place "Where Every Student Thrives." We are more than a score, but the score is what is reported and whether we like it or not, it is what it is, but it doesn't have to stay what it is!
Here is part of our plan to increase our scores:
- 1. We plan on administering the practice ACAP tests and a mock ACT on January 4-5. This will give us data we need to adjust our instruction to help our students thrive.
- 2. Continue with monthly Problem Solving Team PST meetings
- 3. Continue with grade level data meetings.
- 4. Administrator walk-throughs and observations
- 5. Staff walk-throughs
- 6. Wildcat Hour: We have created a 29 minute period devoted to meeting the needs of our students. During this period, teacher will focus on students deficiencies and continue to challenge our top students.
- 7. Bi-monthly Department Meetings to check on progress and support.
- 8. Continue our after-school tutoring on Wednesdays.
- 9. We hired 2 intervention teachers who are working with students weekly.
- 10. Bi-monthly incentives - Rewards and/or Club Day during Wildcat Hour
- 11. Working with the State Department's Department of Special Education to help close the achievement gaps with our students with disabilities.
- 12. Working with our District EL Department and EL teachers to help close the achievement gaps in students of Hispanic ethnicity.
- 13. Last but not least---Build relationships! People work harder when they know you care. Let's continue working together to promote student achievement.
Help us by continuing to encourage your child to be present in mind and body each day! #BetterTogether

New Bell Schedule: Starts Monday, January 8
Personal Technology Acceptable Use Agreement reminder
The use of any personally-owned technology at school is a privilege, not a right.
The District reserves the right to place conditions on, restrict, or prohibit the use of personally-owned technology on its property, including the use of personal online accounts.
Cell phones, personal mobile devices, and wearable technology must be in silent mode and kept out of sight in a locker, backpack, or other location away from students during school hours.
Personal earbuds, headphones, and other personal listening devices are prohibited. Exceptions may be made by school or district administration in case of school or weather emergencies.
Disciplinary Actions
Students are responsible for their behavior as it relates to technology. Therefore, students who are issued individual accounts shall take responsibility for keeping their login IDs and passwords secure.
School and/or district-level administrators will make the determination as to whether specific behavior has violated acceptable practices. Disciplinary actions for violating the AUA will be commensurate with those outlined in the Limestone County Board of Education Student Handbook. In certain cases, financial penalties may apply. Violation of cell phone or personal technology rules will result in:
- First offense: The student’s device will be confiscated by a staff member and held in the main office until the end of the school day. A school administrator will contact parents/guardians. The student may pick up the device from the office at the end of the school day.
- Second offense: The student’s device will be confiscated and held in the main office until the end of the school day. The student’s parents will be contacted and will be required to pick up the device from the office.
- Third offense: The student’s device will be confiscated and held in the main office until the student’s parents are able to come pick it up. The student will be assigned three days of in-school suspension.
- Fourth offense: The student’s device will be confiscated and held in the main office for five days. The device may be banned from school property. Parents will be required to pick up the device from the office. The student will be assigned five days of in-school suspension.
- Fifth and subsequent offenses: The student will be referred for alternative placement.
To review the complete LCS Student Technology Acceptable Use Agreement, please see pages 66-70 of the 2023-24 Student Handbook.
A Message from our District Nurse
Encourage students, parents, and staff to take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
- Encourage students and staff to stay home when sick.
- Inform students, parents, and staff about the importance of staying home when sick until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever* or signs of a fever (chills, feeling very warm, flushed appearance, or sweating) without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
Encourage hand hygiene among students and staff through education, scheduled time for handwashing, and by providing appropriate supplies.
- Teach students and staff to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their bent arm. If they use a tissue, they should put the used tissue in a trash can and wash their hands.
- Provide adequate supplies within easy reach, including tissues and no-touch trash cans.
- Teach students and staff to wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, dry hands with a paper towel, and use the paper towel to turn off the faucet. If soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol may be used.
- Include handwashing time in student schedules.
- Provide adequate supplies, including clean and functional handwashing stations, soap, paper towels, and alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Encourage students and staff to keep their hands away from their nose, mouth, and eyes.
- Encourage routine surface cleaning through education, policy, and the provision of supplies. How To Clean and Disinfect Schools to Help Slow the Spread of Flu.
- Routinely clean surfaces and objects that are touched often, such as desks, countertops, doorknobs, computer keyboards, hands-on learning items, faucet handles, and phones. Empty trash cans as needed.
- Use general cleaning products that you normally use. Always follow product label directions. Additional disinfection beyond routine cleaning is not recommended.
- Provide adequate supplies, such as general EPA-registered cleaning products, gloves, disinfecting wipes, and no-touch trash cans.
- Match your cleaning activities to the types of germs you want to remove or kill.
- Flu viruses are fragile, so standard practices, such as cleaning with soap and water, can help remove and kill them.
- Studies have shown that the flu virus can live and potentially infect a person for only 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on a surface. Therefore, closing schools to clean every surface in the building, is not necessary or recommended to slow the spread of flu, even during a flu outbreak.
- Some schools may include other cleaning and disinfecting practices in their standard procedures to address germs that are not removed or killed by soap and water alone.
Educate students, parents, and staff on what to do if someone gets sick.
- Teach students, parents, and staff the signs and symptoms of flu, emergency warning signs, and groups at higher risk of severe flu. (Lists are provided at the beginning of this document.)
- Those who get flu-like symptoms at school should go home and stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Those who have emergency warning signs should get immediate medical care. Flu: What To Do If You Get Sick.
- Those who get flu-like symptoms and are at higher risk of severe flu illness should ask a health care professional if they should be examined. People at Higher Risk of Developing Flu–Related Complications.
- Separate sick students and staff from others until they can be picked up to go home. When feasible, identify a “sick room” through which others do not regularly pass. The sick room should be separated from areas used by well students for routine health activities, such as picking up medications. Sick room staff should be limited in number and should not be at higher risk for severe illness if they get sick.
- Antiviral drugs are prescription drugs that can treat flu. These drugs can reduce the number of days that a person is sick and also may prevent serious flu complications, but not everyone needs to be treated. You can only get them if you have a prescription from a health care provider.
- Antiviral drugs work best when started within the first two days of illness, but they also may help reduce the risk of severe illness even if started two or more days after onset of illness for persons who are very sick.
- Although most people will recover from flu without treatment, antiviral drugs are recommended for people with flu who require treatment in the hospital; have a progressive, severe, or complicated illness; or are at high risk of severe flu because of an underlying medical condition or their age.

TITLE I STATUS
We are a Title I School. Our status as a Title I School is determined by the percentage of students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Title I Schools are provided federal money based on their rank of the percentage of free/reduced lunches within our school district. This money provides schools with the necessary funds to hire staff to reduce classroom sizes or interventionists who work with students to close achievement gaps. Some schools use the money to purchase software, provide professional development, or provide other instructional materials needed.
Based on last year's free-reduced lunch count, our school will receive about $148,824.12 which will be used to hire two teachers and two interventionists. Of that amount, $2276.17 will be used for Parent & Family Engagement.
These funds are highly beneficial to our school, so please complete the free/reduced lunch application today at https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/PickDistrict. The link is found on our webpage www.westlimestonehigh.org and on the District webpage www.lcsk12.org. Choose "Alabama" and then choose "Limestone County BOE" for our school district to start the application.
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES: If you feel your child could use some school-based counseling or you would like some recommendations for outside services, please see our school counselors Mr. Bob Watson.
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION: When your child is absent, you have 3 days to return a note for it to be counted excused. Notes after 3 days will not be accepted unless, in the case of truancy, the judge allows overdue doctor's notes.
CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: To address problems with chronic absenteeism, students in Grades K-12 who accumulate 18 or more absences, whether deemed excused or unexcused, are by definition chronically absent and will not be allowed to participate in non-academic school activities (e.g., prom, in-school games, dances, and field days).
E-LEARNING DAY: Each student who meets the requirements of the E-Learning Day Policy, can use up to 6 days a year without being considered absent. See the E-Learning Day form below for the requirements.
NO PASS/NO PLAY: Athletics and other extra-curricular activities are valued parts of our schools. Students must maintain high academic standards in order to participate in these activities. For the immediate preceding school year:
High School - Students entering grades 10-12 must have passed 6 subjects that total 6 Carnegie units of credit with a minimum composite numerical average of 70 (must include the four core: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies).
Middle School – Students entering grades 8-9 must have passed 5 new subjects with a minimum composite numerical average of 70 in those five subjects.
