Freshman Focus @ JCHS
October 18th-22nd
Fall Field Trip Follow-Up
One group of teachers facilitated an activity titled Golden Nuggets. In this activity, students collected rocks from their surroundings and then ranked them within small groups. The rankings where then questioned as we asked the students to reclassify and consider that each rock contained an unknown amount of gold. This allowed students to debate internal, non-visible value of an object. Naturally, this conversation made students realize that outward appearance does not always tell the entire story while realizing that each and every student has a special, internal value.
Another group of core teachers facilitated Trust Dodge Ball. In this activity, one teammate was blindfolded while other teammates had to direct the blindfolded player. This activity was focused around the idea of knowing how to follow directions. Another key component was that you needed to listen to the appropriate person when receiving directions. In this activity, there was a lot of noise and activity. Students quickly learned that they needed to block out the noise that was not attempting to help them be successful.
In the upcoming week students and parents alike can look forward to grades being posted on Wednesday. The first nine week grading period completed on last Friday. We all hope to have the best possible grades at that time as we have been working in class, with RTI teachers and with Eagle Enrichment to help students. If your grade is not where you want it, please reach out to our Eagle Enrichment staff that was introduced in a previous newsletter.

Teacher Spotlight- Mrs. Ranetta Howard
My name is Ranetta Howard, I am a Chemistry/Integrated Science teacher at Johnson Central High School in Paintsville, Kentucky. I have been married for 19 years and have two boys. Hunter is 15 and Pacey is 11. Hunter is a freshman at Johnson Central and Pacey is in the 5th grade at Highland Elementary. I also have two dogs. Gidget is my German short hair and Maverick is my bloodhound. I am 41 years old and I have been teaching for 17 years. This is my first year teaching at Johnson Central High School and I am so excited to be here! I attended Southern High School in Racine, Ohio. I received my Bachelors of Science from Alice Lloyd College in 2002. I am currently working on my masters degree in education at the University of the Cumberlands.
I love being in the classroom and I truly believe that making connections with my students is the most important part of my day. I am so excited to be a part of the Eagle family and I am looking forward to future adventures here at Johnson Central High School. When I’m not in the classroom, I am very busy with my two boys. They both play football and are on the wrestling team. They both keep me very busy between practices and games or wrestling meets, but I enjoy every minute of it.
In my free time I enjoy being outdoors. I love to camp and go trail riding with my friends and family. My favorite season is summer. During this time, I love relaxing by the pool and kayaking on the lake.
