THE FRIDAY FORECAST
THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 12 - OCTOBER 16, 2020
World Mental Health Day | October 10
World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year, with the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
High School Seniors, Saavarni Chilukuri and Michelle Siu spent this past summer working and gaining skills on The Purple Hydrangea Project. The student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit fights to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health. Their mission is to promote equity in youth mental health support and foster an environment of understanding in which everyone feels comfortable reaching out for help without fear of being judged, ignored, or shunned.
Saavarni Chilukuri and Michelle Siu became very passionate about speaking out on mental health and wanted to share it with the community of Walnut by bringing the chapter to Walnut High School. The Walnut Chapter’s mission is to carry out similar and new projects in a community-based outlet. As high school students, they understand that dealing with the pressures of school and other personal issues can take a toll on one’s mental health, especially with Walnut High School being known for its academically excellent, yet competitive atmosphere. With this new club, they hope to be more connected with their peers, promote positivity, create a safer environment, and contribute to the community with their in-progress projects.
The Purple Hydrangea Project offers internships and staff positions, allowing students to be a part of an important cause and promoting self growth. Students are constantly working to obtain this ambition by carrying out outreach projects, hosting webinars, inviting guest speakers, and much more. Learn how you can volunteer by contacting Saavarni and/or Michelle at their email address provided below.

Mental Health Layers of Support
Peer Support is offered by our WHS Peer Counselors who are students who have been trained to listen. They are fellow students who will not tell you how you should feel. They are willing to listen and go through issues with you.
Our WHS Peer Counselors have training in how to talk with students without judging. They understand that confidentiality is the most important part of what they do. Peer Counselors will keep what you say private unless there is a risk of suicide, self-injury, child abuse, or a danger that you will hurt someone else.
Peer Counseling is not a club and represents a diverse group of WHS students. In fact, most Peer Counselors do not know each other when the year begins. This group of students only exists to support their fellow students during difficult times.
During these times, asking for support, or just finding a place to talk when you need to, is more important than ever.
If you would like to talk to a counselor or peer to peer support, please complete the form below and someone will reach out to you. We will be checking these messages Monday through Friday at 9am to schedule a time to speak with you.

ATTENTION PARENTS & STUDENTS: Beware of Scammers!
Attention parents & students. With everyone working from home right now, scammers are working overtime to get into your computer. There are various ways that scammers will try to get you to give them access to your computer. Here are just a few:
Phone call: scammers will call pretending to be from Apple Care or Microsoft Support. That is the first red flag, Apple & Microsoft will NEVER call you about an issue. You can ignore all calls from people claiming to be from either company.
Pop-Ups: Pop-ups are annoying to begin with, but they can be a sign of something bigger if they keep coming back. If there is a persistent pop-up claiming that your computer has a virus, close the window. Never call any number on the pop-up.
Email/Phishing: these are emails that look like they are coming from the actual company. They will generally have a link for you to click on to reset your password. Companies never send links to reset passwords in emails. Never click on the link.
If you give access to your computer to these scammers, they can lock your computer and ask for a sum of money to get it unlocked. They could also just delete everything on it. Be aware, be smart and protect yourselves. Go through the companies sites and official phone numbers if you have questions regarding a phone call, pop-up, or email.
RETURN TO ATHLETICS TIMELINE
Dear Walnut High School Families,
As we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and following the Los Angeles Department of Public Health Reopening Protocol of Youth Sports, we are excited to announce that we are in the process of welcoming our athletes back on campus for voluntary athletic workouts and conditioning. Our student-athletes and staff’s safety and well-being remain our top priority as we work together to bring our athletes on campus. As we prepare for this, we want to share a timeline that gives our staff, student-athletes, and parents time to prepare.
Important Dates:
October 9: Athletic Clearance Packets Due
October 14: Parent Informational Video @ 5:00 pm
October 19: Voluntary Fall Sports Return
October 26: Voluntary Winter and Spring Sports Return
Athletic Clearance Packets Due: All athletic clearance procedures must be completed and submitted by October 9. Failure to complete will delay your son/daughter's participation in athletics. Please click here to access the Athletic Clearance Procedures. If you have any questions regarding clearances, please contact Athletic Trainer, Faith Villanueva at whsathleticclearance@wvusd.org.
Parent Informational Video: Every parent must watch our “Return to Athletics” informational video that will be emailed out on October 14 at 5:00 pm. The video will include all of our safety measures that will be taken, including pre-workout screening, student-athlete arrival procedure, facility usage, athletic training services, student-athlete exposure protocol, as well as post-exposure return to play guidelines. At the end of the webinar, you will be asked to fill out a Google Form, acknowledging that you viewed the webinar.
Voluntary Fall Sports Workouts: Your child’s coach will send out detailed information regarding practice times, check-in/check-out locations, as well as conditioning cohorts as we begin our voluntary opening starting October 19. Please note that not all fall sports may begin on this date based on the coaching staff and athletes’ availability.
Voluntary Winter and Spring Sports Workouts: The following week, winter and spring sports will slowly transition back to campus based on information communicated from their coach. Coaches will communicate practice times, dates, check-in points, as well as conditioning cohorts. Please note that not all winter and spring sports may begin on this date based on the coaching staff and athletes’ availability.
Coaches will announce tryouts as we move forward with the return to athletics protocol based on recommendations from the Los Angeles County Department of Health. We understand that the situation may change during the school year, and we will remain flexible and adjust our plans as necessary. In the meantime, we are excited to welcome back our student-athletes as we work to reacclimate back to physical activity, and hopefully, athletic competition in 2021.
Thank you for your support of our coaches and students.
Sincerely,
Ryan Maine
Principal

ATTENDANCE COUNTS!
Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not on camera at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.
If your student is having difficulty logging in, please contact your teacher immediately, and remember to clear their attendance by the end of the day.
Beginning Monday, all single period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact their teacher to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. The teacher will then contact the attendance office to request the change. For full-day absences, please contact the attendance office by the end of the day.
We are so happy to see all of our students online and learning. They are working hard and making us proud. Keep up the great work!

Social Emotional Support for our Students
In 1997, 2004, and 2018, National studies found that school connectedness and family connection were the two most important factors predicting positive outcomes for students during their high school years.
It is critical that WHS, our students, and their families continue to improve our connection to each other.
At WHS we work to ensure that there are many layers of support that surround each student. Our goal is that if a student needs support, they are able to obtain support by choosing from several options.
The "Need Emotional Support" option on our webpage provides students a way to privately reach out and ask for support. Based on the student’s initial request, a staff member will reach out to first ensure their safety and well-being and then to listen. Often students need someone to listen as they process concerns they are having. Based on the issue, the responding staff member will assist the student to make connections to family members or other supportive WHS faculty who can help.
