Canaan Middle School Update
February 9th, 2024
Principal Corner
Dear Canaan Middle School Families,
As we near the middle of February and prepare for the month of March, we have some exciting updates and reminders to share with you:
Talent Show Sign-ups: The Talent Show is fast approaching, scheduled for March 20th. If your child has a special talent they'd like to showcase, sign-ups are due by February 23rd. We're eagerly anticipating the opportunity to celebrate the amazing talents of our students and showcase their skills in front of their classmates.
Think Big Space Trip: Our 5th-grade students recently embarked on an exciting trip to the Think Big Space, and the final groups are set to visit on February 13th. These trips offer invaluable hands-on learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting, allowing students to explore and engage with real-world concepts.
MAP Assessments: Our MAP assessments will be starting soon, extending into March. These assessments are essential for us to gauge student growth and tailor our support accordingly. We encourage all students to approach these assessments with their best efforts. 6th grade will take Math on Feb. 20th and 21st and ELA on Feb. 22nd and 23rd. 5th grade will take ELA on Feb. 26th and 27th and Math on March 6th and 7th.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. Enjoy the amazing sunshine we have had in this unseasonably warm February!
Warm regards,
Mr. Walter, Principal
Canaan Middle School
5th Grade Update
In 5th grae math, we have FINALLY wrapped up Bridges Unit 3 which focuses on Decimal introductory concepts. These included standard / expanded / word forms, place value, fraction equivalence, comparing, ordering, and adding / subtracting decimals. We have taken two quizzes where students, as a whole, have shown amazing growth. On Thursday, we took our test over Unit 3 and students were able to finish on Friday, if needed. Moving forward, we are going to spend the next couple weeks focusing on whole number multiplication and division through multiple strategies (including the standard algorithms). By the end, we will be able to solve expressions such as "234 x 567" and "4,302 ÷ 54" using whichever strategy students prefer.

Counselor’s Corner - Mrs. Hein
The focus for this month’s lesson is to learn techniques to resolve conflicts peacefully. Fifth-grade students will learn the importance of being able to identify the problem, develop possible solutions, evaluate the best option, and implement a plan, where the result is a “compromise” or “win-win” resolution. This activity provides students with the opportunity to practice strategies through role-playing a variety of situations.
