Weekly STEM Announcements

This talk is entitled: Flow Cytometry Technology: Unraveling the Complexity of Tissues, Oceans, Crops…..and Vaccines. Flow cytometry is a technology that rapidly analyzes single cells or particles as they flow past single or multiple lasers while suspended in a buffered salt-based solution and it has a wide variety of uses. The talk will be given by Roxana del Rio-Guerra, a Faculty Scientist in the Dept. of Surgery at the UVM-Larner College of Medicine.

Seniors should make sure that their STEM Advisor know which capstone course they are using and what their project is. A rubric for the capstone project can be found in Google Classroom.

Cyrus Perkinson from Green Driving America will provide students with information about clean driving which will benefit the students and the environment. This talk will be in the LIBRARY during flex.

Graham Hawkes, a marine engineer and submarine designer, will be here to talk to us about the oceans. Mr. Hawkes has had a long and distinguished career at the forefront of underwater exploration. He will focus on opening your eyes to the fact most of the earth is covered by water and that we should have a more ocean-centric view of life on our planet. This talk will be in the auditorium during flex.

The program has been re-envisioned for Summer 2023 in order to offer a more tailored experience in the exciting STEM-focused career disciplines at BETA Technologies. They will be accepting 12-16 high school students for 4 immersion days this summer. Students will explore careers, select interests, shadow, and present back to the Team during a culminating event at the end of the program.

UVM Extension’s 4-H Program invites rising 8th-12th graders to apply for one of three, free, residential summer academies held on the UVM campus June 25-30. AgroTek Innovation, now in its second year, exposes students to agriscience innovation skills by diving deep into one of three topics; Culturing Cells for Healthier Soils, Shifting the Waste to Value Paradigm (converting agricultural waste into value added products), and Using Virtual Reality for More Precise Agriculture. In addition to learning content, participants will build important relationships with undergraduate student mentors along with faculty and staff.
