Racebrook Tract
An easy woods walk with lots of trail options
How long is the walk?
I like to do the outside perimeter, taking Red to Purple to White, and then Red back to the parking lot. That loop is 2.75 miles. You can shorten the loop by taking the Green or Black trails.
Some notes from my family's experience:
Racebrook Tract is a go-to for my family when we need to get the kids and dog out of the house but do not have time or motivation for a big adventure. The trail network allows for a walk between about 1 - 3 miles, and trails are wide and mostly flat, with a few gentle ups and downs.
The Purple trail is especially nice, going through a stand of HUGE old pine trees! In warm weather, there are many places along the Red trail that it is fun to go down to the banks of the Brook to splash and wade and enjoy the water.
There is a giant boulder on the Green trail that is a good play and exploring destination. It is not too far off the Red trail (you can see it from the Red trail if you are looking for it), so we often stop there to play and then head back to the Red trail to continue on the perimeter loop.
Also not to be missed is the boardwalk (on the map as Brown trail/Nature trail). From the main parking lot, go left to find this hidden gem. It does not connect to any other trails, so look for this before or after your other trail explorations. The Nature Trail is a raised wooden boardwalk that makes a small loop (less than a half mile). It is small enough that when my boys were preschoolers I could sit on a bench at the beginning and watch them explore the whole thing by themselves, which they thought was very exciting!
Note that there are many more trails than are marked on the official map. Some are blazed and some are not. The map has the major ones, so you can choose to follow any of the smaller interior trails and eventually you'll intersect with one of the main trails.
The parking lot is on Racebrook Road in Orange, and can be found by looking up "Racebrook Tract" in most map apps.
