Soul Matters For Parents Meets this Sunday

We have a new resource for families this year, to explore the themes of the month and how we can bring those themes home. We have a "Soulful Home" packet that shares ideas for how to bring the theme to life in regular moments of your family life. You can get a copy of those packets in the Commons, on the closed Facebook Group for OUUC Families, or by emailing me at dre@ouuc.org


We will also hold a drop-in discussion circle each month on the 4th Sunday. Please join me for the first of these discussion circles this Sunday:


9:30-10:30 for those parenting children 0-10

12:30-1:30 for those parenting children 10+


Note on childcare during the circles: the nursery and RE programs will serve as childcare for the younger circle, there will be no childcare for the older circle unless requested in advance. Children 10+ are welcome to hang out and play board games during the circle.

This Sunday: September 22

This Sunday our children in Preschool through 5th grade will be exploring "Expectations" through learning about our 7 Principles, with the focus question "what is expected of us as Unitarian Universalists?"


In Middle School group we will be beginning our Twilight Zone curriculum, watching "Time Enough At Last" and exploring the themes and questions raised by that show.

Child Dedications

Are you interested in having your child(ren) dedicated at OUUC? Unlike a Christian-style baptism, most UU congregations do a Child Dedication, a ritual crafted by the minister and the parents to dedicate the adults and the congregation to the support of the child.

Trunk or Treat

We're going to have a Trunk or Treat at OUUC on October 31st, Halloween, from 4pm-6:30pm.


Sign up to participate, by bringing a decorated car and handing out candy, by emailing Sara at dre@ouuc.org or on the sign up board in the Commons. We need cars to make this fun!


And then kids are invited to come and trick or treat at the OUUC parking lot. It will be fun! Come see Rev. Mary and myself, along with other OUUC folks, in costume and handing out treats.

Soulful Home, Faithful Parenting

Bring the themes of this year into your home and get support and reflection on how they relate to your parenting!

September 22 the discussion will be about Parenting and Expectations

All Ages Class: Paste Paper

PASTE PAPER ART – FOR ALL AGES!

Date: Saturday, September 28 Time: Noon – 3:00 p.m. Place: OUUC Leader: John Snyder Children 9 and above are welcome with an adult. Class size 4 minimum, 12 maximum. There is a $5 materials charge per person; maximum of $15 per family.


While I think of Paste Paper as more of a craft than an art, it is a way of adding texture, color and line to paper. The result is not usually an end in itself, but it is used for card making, book making, artist trading cards, and other paper crafts. Related to marbling, it was used as the endpaper of books.

You will have the chance to use these techniques: combing, stamping, rolling, and dripping in decorating papers.

Also, you will have a chance to make an Origami Star Book with Paste Paper covers.

You will come away with papers to take home for your own projects.

Youth Led Climate Strike

Young people are leading a Climate Strike for action on the climate crisis, the biggest threat to our future. We, as a global society, are at a crossroads. This strike is an invitation to choose.


Choose the kids, choose humanity, choose a livable future.



There is a strike in Olympia with hopes to engage each other and our representatives to tackle the climate crisis at the scale that science and justice demand.



The strike is on Friday, September 20 from 11AM to 1PM at the Capitol steps. Can you make it?

Coming of Age

Coming of Age is a Mentored Rite of Passage Program. Mentors are adult role-models who accompany the youth on this journey, with a large change this year – a team of mentors will jointly mentor all the youth rather than one-on-one. The whole group meets once a month, with some personal work the youth will do on their own time as well. At the end of the year there is a retreat weekend involving a vigil/quest for the youth, and then all the youth will also deliver their credo speeches in a worship service. All youth who complete Coming of Age are eligible to become members of the congregation, if they choose to do so.


Coming of age is for youth in 8th grade and older, and it begins in October. To learn more

Teen Faith in Action Leadership Council

This year I'm very excited for a new program we are trying for teens ages 13-18: the Teen Faith in Action Leadership Council. Meetings will be held on the 1st Sunday of each month, 12:30-2pm, with a lunch provided. Drop-ins are welcome, no need to commit to the whole year.
