NEW BUSINESS
NWEA Time!
NWEA tests give us information about student learning three times a year in the areas of Math, Science, Language, and Reading. Each test is divided into subtests that are split out the same way our End of Course exams are. Classroom teachers and I meet to look at group and individual scores to make adjustments to instruction. These tests are always important for us as valuable insight into what's going well in the classroom and what needs to shift. This year, we're leaning even more into the test data. We need EVERY STUDENT to try his or her very best so we have accurate information to start from. This is what we discussed in our First Friday meeting. We have work to do, and this data focuses our efforts.
When the third hour bell rings on Tuesday and Wednesday, please report to the same locations you tested in for the NWEA in September. Email me if you don't know or remember where you'll test.

Winter 2022 NWEA Schedule
Tuesday, December 6
3/4 hours: Reading
6/7 hours: Language
Wednesday, December 7
3/4 hours: Science
6/7 hours: Math
We'll ask all HS students to set goals for each test. We're also bringing back our NWEA Incentive system (read on!). As you complete your tests, you'll write down your scores and bring them to your NWEA teacher, who will record them.
SCCC Students - you will report to SCCC. When you get back to Slater, report to your assigned room and start on your test. We will pull you for make up testing as needed to complete your tests. That day is TBD.
We will also resume our incentive system - for each test, your NWEA Teachers will determine whether or not you have met three out of the four following criteria:
- Less than 2% Rapid Guessing
- RIT Growth or no loss from previous score *
- Attendance
- No disruptions or outbursts
Students must meet incentive criteria for ALL FOUR TESTS to participate in the (future) Incentive Event. We're still working out the details of this event and are open to student suggestions. Last Spring, we had several Staff v. Students games and eligible students were able to use their phones at school for the day. For the Fall Incentive Day, we watched a movie in the Gym. I've had a request for Bowling for the Winter Incentive - Email your ideas!
A New Approach
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy Holidays from the music department at Slater Schools! We wanted to inform everyone that our winter program will look a little different this year as we are trying some new ideas. The performances will all be the night of December 14th in the high school gym. We will be starting at 6:00 pm with our kindergarten through fourth grade students who are performing a very sweet program called “The Littlest Christmas Tree.” The story is about a little tree who wants so badly to be the tree picked to be in Santa and Mrs. Claus’ house for the Christmas season but is told it is too small and puny by the other trees. Little do the other trees know that their selfish attitudes and misunderstanding of the true meaning of Christmas are what keep them from being selected. The elementary students will be dismissed to sit with their families after their portion of the program is finished.
Once the kindergarten through fourth grade students are finished with their program we will be transitioning to the band and choir ensembles for the remainder of the evening. The tentative order, as of now, is to have fifth grade band and the fifth grade choir begin after the elementary students followed by sixth grade band and choir, junior high band and choir, and we will end the night with our high school ensembles. We encourage everyone to view the artwork being displayed in the halls created by several of the students you will see performing during the evening.

ATTENDANCE POLICY GRADES 6-12
The Slater Board of Education, school administration, and teachers believe that the responsibility for students attending school lies jointly with the student, the parents, and the school. The following attendance policy is designed to maximize student attendance while allowing for the necessary absences from school throughout the year.
1. Parents are requested to telephone the school at 660-529-2278 by 8:30 a.m. when their child will be absent from school. If no call is received by 8:30 a.m., the office secretary will attempt to make contact with parents.
2. Students are allowed to make up all work missed during an absence unless the absence is the result of an out-of-school suspension. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete missed assignments, which are subject to individual teacher policies.
3. Juniors may request to take 2 college visits. All seniors are allowed 3 college visits. Arrangements must be made in advance through the Counselor’s office. If arrangements are not made in advance they will not be excused.
4. Field trips or any activity sponsored by the school are not considered absences from school. Students are responsible for informing teachers of their absences and obtaining assignments the day before the scheduled event.
5. For credit purposes, any student that is 25 minutes or more late for a class will be considered absent from that class.
6. Students with an attendance rate below 90% will not be allowed open lunch.
7. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours of that school day to participate in or attend any school sponsored event.
8. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours on Friday to participate in or attend any school sponsored weekend activities.
9. Students that fall below 90% attendance rate will appear before the Attendance Review Committee.
Shout Out
Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM.
Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.
Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!

GOOD STANDING
To be considered a student in good standing, a student must not be in violation of the attendance policy, have outstanding discipline referrals OR appear on the current F list.
In order to participate in extracurricular events including (but not limited to): dances, field trips, school-sanctioned sports events; a student must be in good standing.
Students in grades 6-12 that are not in good standing will have closed lunch and be required
to sign in daily in the cafeteria.
Parking Spot Painting
If you earned a reserved parking spot (21-22 Students of the Month, Field Day Winners - see the list below), you're officially able to begin the painting process! See the Contract below. Printed copies are available in the HS Office.
Spoiler alert:
- There's a $25 deposit this year. You'll get it back after repainting your spot at a day and time to be determined. Materials for this will be provided by the school.
Clarification:
You don't have to be on the list to park at school/drive. These are the students who have earned reserved spots that they may choose to personalize by painting. If you don't have a reserved spot, you can park in the Gravel Lot south of the HS Building or North of the ECC, off of Morgan Street.
