Buddy Class Gifts
Buddies are so important at our school! Since their pairing on our first day of school, the first graders have a 6th grade buddy looking out for them, offering warm hugs and sage advice on the playground. For our 6th graders, they have someone looking up to them and they, their behavior, and their attitude really matter!
One of the fun parts of having a buddy is getting to share with them. Our 6th grade handwork program includes creating a hand-stitched felt and wool ball with hand-embroidered lettering. On Monday, the Blue Heron class presented each first grader with their ball in a lovely morning meeting. Thank you, 6th grade!

Safety Drills on Campus
Dear Siskiyou School Parents,
Per the Parent Handbook and in accordance with Jackson County regulations and our Emergency Preparedness Plan, we perform all-school monthly fire drills. Additionally, and to always meet requirements, we conduct earth quake drills a few times a year as well as Safety Command & Act drills.
Our Safety Committee, (Jenny James, Margie Glatte, Christy Bartow & Aurilia McNamara), meet regularly, go over requirements, update documents and tools, bring information to the faculty and to the children as needed and if appropriate, and read up on policies and regulations to ensure we are up to date and complying with the law.
In a few weeks, we will conduct a “Safety Command and Act" drill. Although these are used to be fully trained for the instance of an intruder coming to campus, they are also used for MANY different instances, where we need our students to be trained to simply listen to WHATEVER the command of their teacher might be. It is always the teacher's discretion in any of these emergency instances to either evacuate as quickly as possible, or to take shelter in place.
A few years ago, when the faculty and administration participated in the ALICE training, the police said that evacuation was preferred but if the trespasser/intruder or danger was too close to be able to evacuate safely, then shelter in place would be the command of the teacher. We always make sure to practice both so that our students learn to follow any and all commands of their teachers.
We also ask each class to walk to our evacuation sites; one is in the Takelma neighborhood, the other is the Ashland Fire Station on Ashland Street.
We have been in touch with Kelly Burns, the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Ashland, about changes to our evacuation procedures due to the new safety gates we've put into place, and the reunification process should an evacuation occur. These final procedures are being codified in our own emergency manual by our Safety Committee for next year.
Your students might come home with responses to our monthly drills and if you have any questions, please contact Jenny James at jenny.james@siskiyouschool.org.
8th Grade Project Presentations
We're excited to see 8th grade projects coming up on our school calendar. Next month, the Dragonfly Class will present their 8th grade capstone projects to the Siskiyou School Community. They are asked to describe what topic they chose to study for their project, what they learned over their apprenticeship, and to respond to questions from the live audience. Please note the dates above and plan to join us in Pine Hall.
We’re happy to be able to share our 8th grade project presentations with our wider community over Zoom. A link to join us online will be sent to all currently enrolled parents on Monday, March 11th. You are welcome to tune in and check out the work done by the Dragonfly Class this year, but please, for the safety of our students, do NOT post this link over social media.
8th Grade Project Presentations will also be recorded and available to view through a YouTube link.
Traffic Updates: Turn Signals and Jumping the Line
From your traffic team:
Please DO use your turn signals/blinkers on Clay Street! The more information we have about what your car is doing, the easier it is for us to direct traffic in a way that keeps it flowing. We might not recognize your car or see you, so your turn signal really matters.
Please DO NOT jump the line and scoot around traffic turning into the lot if you are heading up Clay Street! It is very unsafe even if it looks all clear. Our neighbors have car cameras and are recording this traffic jumping. The safety of everyone around your car is more important than a few extra moments to get up the street. Thank you!
Supporting the Middle School Child - Tuesday, February 20th, 6:30 p.m.
Paul Arredondo and Kelly Tisdel partner to bring you an evening related to teenagers and their development. Being a teen and parenting in these times is intense to say the least. Old models we were parented with and attempt to recreate don’t work for teenagers of this age. Paul and Kelly will discuss how to clarify expectations and boundaries with your preteen/teen, the importance of noticing your projections on your preteen/teen and self-care and understanding parental roles in relationship to the development of your preteen/teen. Q&A session at the end of the talk.
Starfish Class - 3rd Grade
The Starfish class had an exciting day sharing their wonderful balance scales last week. We had time for each child to speak to the class about their building and creating process. It's so exciting to see how confident the children are in front of their peers and how interesting each project was. I think the best part of the project was when the 8th grade came to admire and try out all the inventions. Praise from an 8th grader is priceless and the children are so precious when they are all together.

Dear Community,
My name is Anya Moore, and I am a proud alum of the Siskiyou School (shoutout to the River Class of 2019!). I'm excited to share a meaningful initiative I'm currently involved in in Peru with the fantastic NGO Imfundo Kahle. We're on a mission to provide back-to-school kits for children in Iquitos, Peru, ensuring they have the tools they need for a successful academic year.
After my time at the Siskiyou School, I have a deep appreciation for education, and it has been eye-opening for me to see what education looks like for the majority of people in the world. What a privilege it was to attend the Siskiyou School, and I feel that it is now my responsibility, and the responsibility of our community, to give back and do what we can to support education for those with far fewer resources.
These kids are not just kind but incredibly intelligent, and they deserve the world. With just $20, we can fund an entire back-to-school kit for one child. Every contribution will make a huge impact!
Please consider making a donation to our PayPal account (@imfundokahle) or give us a call at +972 54-596-0691 to make a donation over the phone. The campaign lasts until February 10th. Thank you for your kindness and generosity! Much love to my community 💜
Best wishes,
~ Anya
