Hatherly Happenings

On Monday we had our March All School Meeting which introduced our theme of ‘Relationships’. The meeting focused on the special relationships that exist between kids and adults within the community. We also discussed why these relationships are so meaningful and important to both kids and adults! We viewed a video that dove into the different types of relationships that exist, and the elements that build a strong relationship. Next, students viewed a video with some cameos from adults within the Scituate community, sharing their own thoughts and experiences about relationships with kids in this community. We ended our meeting by introducing the all school activity - a reflective writing prompt in which students are asked to describe a meaningful relationship they have with a caring adult.

This week's story highlights important relationships we have with adults. Thank you, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco, is about a little girl who overcomes her reading disability; dyslexia, through a trusting relationship that a teacher builds with her.

We are looking for donations of materials to provide students with a variety of options for recess. At Hatherly School, we aim to make recess a time where students increase their level of physical activity, while also engaging them in activities that help to improve their memory and concentration. Ultimately, regardless of the activity, students will learn how to play and share with others further developing their social and emotional development. To this end, we are hoping the Hatherly community can assist us in this endeavor to provide students with more choice at recess. Some examples are: cornhole, Spike Ball, Kan Jam, Legos, art supplies (markers, coloring books, wiki sticks, sidewalk chalk), Ladder Toss, Giant Connect 4, Tic- Tac- Toe, frisbees, jump ropes, or other fun activities that your children love to play.

Students in several of our 3rd Grade WIN groups have been working hard doing research about volcanoes. After reading an article about Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii, the students conducted some research about their own volcano related topic. They created Google Slides presentations that contained informational paragraphs about their topics. They culminated their research by presenting to their WIN group and will eventually share out with a larger audience. We are so proud of our researchers!

Parent-teacher conferences will be held this Thursday, March 17th. You will once again use the electronic registration system, School Appointments Online. Registration is open until Tuesday, March 15th, 2022 at 10 pm.

We are excited to welcome a new instructional paraprofessional to our building, Ms. Granatino. Ms. Granatino started last week and will be working mostly with second grade.

Ms. Granatino wanted to share a little bit about herself with you all, please see below!

I have lived in Scituate my entire life and attended Hatherly Elementary school a while back. Although it feels very odd to be working in a place I used to attend school, it has been a pleasure seeing former teachers and staff members. I have many different hobbies but some of my favorites include skiing in the wintertime, as well as surfing in the summertime. Being able to walk to the beach is one of my favorite things about living in Scituate! I love being able to take my dog Nala for long walks along the beach or through the many different walking trails Scituate has to offer. One of my favorite restaurants in Scituate Harbor is Salt Society. I look forward to creating life-long relationships with each student and staff member here at Hatherly School!
