A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
The team effort has been outstanding! Let’s continue to be our students’ greatest cheerleaders, as they complete their Beginning of Year (BOY) Benchmark Assessments. These assessments are essential to informing students’ instructional needs, learning plans and tiered interventions. You can support their efforts by ensuring they have an optimal testing environment, which is quiet and free from interruptions. As positive as your intentions may be, encourage them from a distance. Remember, such assessments should be completed independently.
Thank you for your feedback, as we continue to work with DCPS, in reflecting on and implementing best practices for engagement and grading in all subject areas. In addition to the DCPS guidance we shared around engagement and grading policies, we will be sharing general grading practices with families, to increase clarity. As DCPS continues to roll out guidance, we will share updates with our school community.
We recognize the need for flexibility, during these unprecedented times. In addition to scheduled live instruction, the Inner Core Team (Specials) will continue to provide asynchronous (recorded) lessons, for those who wish to access that tool. If you choose to not access asynchronous Inner Core lessons, students will not be directly penalized for missing that activity. But, please remain mindful that although students may not receive a grade for that particular activity, asynchronous lessons are developed to supplement student learning and are encouraged, as students will earn a grade for inner core courses.
In our efforts to continue to gathering input from families, please submit the virtual learning survey, below. In addition, read the "PTA Announcements" and review the other pertinent information shared in this newsletter. Have a safe weekend and thank you for practicing grace and understanding! We are all in this, together.
Please keep you and your loved ones safe. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com or backtoschool.dc.gov for DCPS virtual learning resources.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

PTA GENERAL MEETING. The first PTA General Meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 5-6 pm by Zoom, with subsequent meetings also held on the fourth Tuesday of each month. For the first half hour, the Executive Board will provide PTA updates for and solicit input from Hyde-Addison families, and then we will break out into smaller groups, most likely by grade, so we can share ideas with our cohorts and get to know each other. The latter half of the meeting will be devoted to Executive Board business, where everyone is welcome to stay and discuss in more detail how the PTA can best support our students, teachers, and staff! Check the calendar on Konstella for the meeting invitation.
