Week At A Glance

Cold and flu season is still upon us. As a friendly reminder, please encourage good hygienic practices at home so we can all remain healthy!

Wednesday 2/1

  • 100th day of school! We have a fun day of activities planned. Wear 100 things, the number 100, or even dress like you're 100 years old!

Byrd Spring Bazaar

Is your child interested in becoming an entrepreneur? We have an opportunity for them to show off their ideas! Our school will be having a Bazaar to help others in our community and students right here at school! All of the money from the Spring Bazaar will be divided up between two great causes. Money will be donated to the Byrd Elementary Connie Brice Scholarship and the Goochland County Animal Shelter. We are encouraging EVERYONE to participate! Students, families and classes can all set up a booth in the gym at the Bazaar! You choose what you would like to sell. Ideas to think about include: vegetables, jams, muffins, jewelry, crafts, photographs, canned goods, lemonade, etc. There will be some special surprises at the Bazaar as well!


Students may advertise their goods on the BES Bazaar bulletin board on the fifth-grade hall at Byrd!


Start planning your booth for the Spring Bazaar on March 28th! Applications can be found HERE and are also coming home with students on Monday.

Important Information for Rising 6th Graders

Please join Goochland Middle School staff on January 31st for the GMS Virtual Curriculum Fair! This virtual event will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. School admin and counselors will review the course selection process and new options for the 2023-2024 year, followed by breakout rooms to learn more information about our core and elective class offerings.


Will your child be in 6th grade next year? If so, don't miss out on the information session specifically for parents of rising 6th graders!

Are you a BES Dad, Stepdad, Granddad, or Uncle? Do you want to spend time with your student at school? Come be a BES Watch Dog! Our Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) serve as positive male role models while spending time in their students classrooms! Counseling Lessons With Mrs. Jackson

Our Fantastic Elastic Brains and Growth Mindset

Hello Byrd Families! We wrapped up another set of lessons this week on different parts of our brain and how they function as well as understanding a growth mindset. Pre-K through 1st heard the story ‘Jabari Jumps’ by Gaia Cornwall about working up the courage to try something new or maybe something we might be scared to try. We then practiced making growth mindset statements and understanding the ‘The Power of Yet.’ Linked below is a song from Sesame Street explaining the ‘Power of Yet.’ 3rd through 5th grade learned about five different parts of the brain, the cerebrum, the amygdala, the cerebellum, the prefrontal cortex, and the hippocampus, and how they all function to make us who we are! We also heard how our brain grows and learns when we make mistakes or try new things. We finished off our lesson with a friendly round of ‘Brain Games’ testing our memory and knowledge on the parts of the brain. - Mrs. Jackson

Reminders

  • If you wish to volunteer, eat lunch with your child, or enter the school building in any capacity, you must check in at the front office with your driver's license! We cannot let anyone in the building without checking their driver's license. This is to keep our students and staff safe. Thank you for understanding!

  • If you need to pick up your student in the office, please do so before 2pm! Pickup after 2pm should be done through the car rider line.
