What Can Parents Do???
- Read! Read! Read!
Have your student read to you 5-15 minutes daily. Have them read to you and then
discuss with you what they read.
Have a parent/child book study. Pick something you both like. Read a chapter a
week and then hang out over ice cream or a slice of pizza and discuss your book.
They get one-on-one time with you, while you are reinforcing their comprehension
skills.
Have your older students read to their younger siblings. The little ones will eat the attention up and this will likely reinforce their willingness to read on their own as they grow. It's a Win-Win!
- Attendance
Ensure your child has good attendance at school.
- Communication
Maintain on-going communication with your child's teachers. Inquire about academic readiness during your PEPs. Ask for input on things they think might be helpful for their specific grade-level and/or subject outside of school.
- Help with Homework
Work with your child on homework. This gives you an opportunity to see areas where extra practice may be needed.
- Develop Good Study Habits
Set aside a time each night for homework/studying. Reinforce positive attitudes towards education.
- Honest Discussion
The STAAR is a test designed to measure grade level academic progress and readiness. Remind your child that this is information they have been working on all year. Have them see it as a positive challenge, not a negative obstacle.
- Finally.... Breathe
Stay calm and model relaxtion. Stomp out the anxiety monster before he appears!
