Google Down & Out
Checking Google Outages
On Monday, December 14, Google experienced outages and their site and applications were unavailable to users. The site was down for about 45 minutes throughout the world. Teachers all over were unable to utilize the Google Platform they rely on for teaching and communicating with students. Some were unsure whether or not it was their issue or a larger one. In the future, you can utilize the Google Workspace Status Dashboard. This page offers performance information on many Google applications. You can check this site to see the current status of 18 Google services listed. This will tell you if there are any Google applications that are not working or are experiencing issues. The table is interactive so you can click on the dots to obtain more information about the problems.
Software Outages
Also you can require registration for your meetings. You do not have to do it for every meeting, but you may want to add this feature in from time to time. This short Google Slide Deck explains how to use the registration feature.
There are many engaging features in Zoom that you can use to keep meetings interactive. The nonverbal signals are always available. You can launch a poll for engagement or for a quick formative assessment. There are also Reactions that include the hands clapping and the thumbs up symbols. In our licensed accounts, we also have access to Breakout Rooms. Zoom can group students automatically or groups can be created manually by the host.
Remember, when using Zoom, make sure you login with Google Sign On at the bottom of the sign in page under the Blue Bar. Also, if you want access to all of the setting features, use the web browser and not the app. You can access Zoom at zoom.us.

Ed Law 2-D Requirements for Software
Remember, we can no longer support software that is not compliant with this law. The law sets out to protect student and teacher PII (Personally Identifiable Information). If you are looking to procure new software, you need to fill out the Software Recommendation Form. To speed up the process, take a look at EducationFramework.com. Login with Google and go to Privacy Quality Scores to evaluate the application's compliance with Ed Law 2-D.
