Board Update
A recap of the work session held December 2, 2020
The Reading Community City Schools Board of Education met for a regularly scheduled work session on December 2. Below are the highlights of the meeting along with the Superintendent report provided for the Board. All Board meetings are streamed and archived here.
Baseball/Softball Complex: The Board approved the Phase 1 plan for the existing Hilltop Elementary site by a 5-0 vote, moving forward with the development of the baseball/softball complex.
Second Semester Learning Model: Reading Community City School District will be continuing in a blended learning model for the second semester, with the addition of in-person instruction on Wednesdays. Families also have the option of their students learning remotely. A survey must be completed for each student by December 8 to select in-person or remote learning. The survey can be found here. Please complete it promptly so planning can begin.
District COVID-19 Updates: COVID-19 cases remain a concern and we encourage all students to practice social distancing, wear masks, wash hands, and stay safe. The district’s latest COVID-19 data was shared, which can be found here. These numbers reflect updated cases in just the three days since returning from the Thanksgiving holiday.
Winter Athletics Suspended: The Board approved the suspension of winter athletics through January 4. While these activities are an important part of the educational experience to keep students connected and involved, the action is being taken because of the increased spread of COVID-19 in our community and the risk in-person activities present to our athletes and coaches. Individual training can continue, and coaches are able to meet virtually with students, but in-person activities are on pause. All school-sponsored club activities can meet virtually, or in-person, provided they follow all distancing and masking guidelines, and limit gatherings to 10 or fewer people.
RCCSD Strategic Planning: Superintendent Jason Enix discussed the work that’s on-going in drafting the district mission and vision statements as part of the strategic planning process. The next phase of this process is scheduled for December 17th with a draft of the final product expected in January.
Board Development: The Board also reviewed the drafts of a Board mission, vision statements, and code of conduct created at the work session on November 19. Final drafts are expected to be ready for Board action on December 16.
District Financial Planning: Mr. Enix and Mrs. Lewis also discussed election dates and timelines for necessary Board action should a decision be made to consider placing an operating levy on the ballot in 2021. This was the beginning discussion of district financial planning following the approval and submission of the most recent Five Year Forecast in November.
Community Chat: Superintendent Jason Enix and Treasurer Colette Lewis will hold a virtual Community Chat on December 9 at 4:30. This will be the final community chat of this calendar year. Those community members interested in attending can sign up here.
PK-12 Campus Construction Update: A final 11-month walkthrough was completed on Wednesday, December 2. A final punch-out list was generated and a plan to complete the project is underway.
