In-Person Learning Beginning November 9

An overview of the DCPS plan for in-person learning for elementary grade students during Term 2 can be found below, including a video in both English and Spanish. Details are available on www.DCPSReopenStrong.com.

Please join DCPS leadership tonight, October 6 at 5:30 p.m or October 14 at 6:00 p.m. for our a community informational session. These virtual events will take place on Teams and you can RSVP here.

We recognize returning to school may not be the preference of every family. Learning at home will still be available for all students from Pre-K through 12th Grade. Families will be notified by October 23 should in-person learning be available for their student, and Student CARE seat notification will occur by October 30.

_______________

1. In-Person Learning Classrooms

Across all DCPS elementary schools, one classroom per grade will have a teacher leading in-person instruction for a small class of up to 11 students. The daily schedule will be similar to a typical school day. These in-person classes begin on November 9 and students will attend school five days a week with a half-day on Wednesdays.

Additional teacher-led classrooms will open specifically for students receiving special education services prioritizing seats in self-contained classes.

2. Student CARE Classrooms

CARE stands for “Canvas Academics and Real Engagement.” In these small-group classrooms, students will have supervised care for the school day from a caring adult who is not their teacher. Students will have the benefit of being with their peers at school but will participate in lessons virtually on a computer.

This program begins the week of November 16 for students in PK3 to 1st grade, and the week of November 30 for students in grades 2-5. Students will attend school five days a week with a half-day on Wednesdays.

For both at-school options, we will prioritize classroom seats for our elementary students with the highest need based on current enrollment information through a randomized selection process. These priority groups are:

  • Students experiencing homelessness
  • Students who receive special education services or who are English Language Learners
  • Students who are designated as At-Risk
  • All other enrolled students

Siblings attending the same school will receive a preference in the process to keep them on the same schedule, where possible. We will also guarantee seats for children of teachers and staff who are working in person if their child is enrolled in a DCPS school.
