Messages from Dr. Zilliox
Hello Fredonia School Community,
We hope everyone had a great holiday and Happy New Year.
As mentioned in our last update, we continue to work hard within the district to create a sense of belonging amongst all students and adults. Again, the word belonging can be defined as a sense of being part of something larger than yourself or feeling like you are an important member of a group.
Being a part of an accepting community allows us to feel a greater connection to those around us. When we have the support of others and are not alone, we become more resilient, and are able to become our greatest selves.
Within this conversation, it is helpful to have working definitions of terms that are important to this discussion. Some of these words include:
• Diversity: Individual traits and differences which directly impact student experience.
• Equity: The promotion of access, opportunity, and advancement of all individuals to identify and eliminate conditions that prevent the ability of all students to reach their full potential.
• Inclusivity: Providing equal access to opportunities and resources for students who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those having physical or mental disabilities or those who belong to a minority group.
When beginning to open up a dialogue about belonging, most districts start with some basic questions. We are in the process of beginning to assess our current state before moving forward to potential action steps. Some questions we are asking include the following:
• What do we know about our students’ lives outside of school?
• What do we know about the challenges and/or barriers our students experience?
• Does everyone have equal access to the educational programs we offer?
• Which students participate in which programs?
By learning more about where we stand, we hope to enhance our sense of belonging across the district which is crucial to our happiness, mental well-being, physical health, and even longevity. It gives everyone a sense of purpose and meaning. Research has shown that loss of belonging has been associated with stress, illness, and depression.
We look forward to working together in relation to these concepts and welcome the entire school community to be active participants in our culture of belonging at FCSD.
Please watch for additional information in the upcoming updates.
Enjoy the remainder of the week and be well.
Respectfully,
Brad Zilliox
Hello Fredonia Families,
Please see the message below that we shared with our students today. We ask that you reinforce and support this message for all of our athletic events, but especially in relation to rivalry games.
Thanks to all those who will be attending our basketball games this week vs. Dunkirk and Southwestern. We appreciate your support of our teams, but please keep the following in mind:
- Cheer for our team, not against our opponent.
- Keep the language clean with no swearing.
- Be respectful of the officials. Please watch this video for more on this topic.
- Be respectful of their fans and parents.
- Represent our school positively.
- Do not engage in negative social media dialogue with opposing teams and fans.
Best of luck to all players and coaches. Go Billies!
Stay classy Fredonia!

Mr. Bennett Earns National Recognition
For almost 25 years, School Band and Orchestra Magazine’s “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” report shines a light on outstanding music educators from across the United States. Every year one music teacher is selected to represent each state after being nominated by a colleague, student, and/or administrator and being selected by a panel of judges.
Please join us in congratulating our very own Andrew Bennett for being selected as New York State's winner! To read more, please view the article linked below.
Welcome Rudy, the newest member of our therapy dog family!
Meet Rudy, another proud member of our growing therapy dog family!
Rudy was adopted by the Gugino family, and his humans attend our middle school. He is a two year old Labradoodle trained by Kaleigh Bell from Shaylah's Canine Commands in Forestville. Rudy comes from a long line of therapy dogs. His mother is a therapy dog at a middle school in Ohio!
Therapy dogs have been proven to benefit both students and adults on multiple levels, including being helpful in terms of mental health support and reducing anxiety.
When not working in the District, Rudy enjoys meeting new friends, swimming, watching squirrels, and TIMBITS! His most favorite thing to do is watch for his humans to come home on the school bus.
We can’t wait to welcome Rudy who will be joining our third and fourth grade classes for periodic visits. We communicated with our students and families before moving forward with this initiative. We appreciate everyone involved for their support as we continue with our ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and supportive environment within our schools.
Keep your eyes out for more fun features on our newest canine member of the #fredoniafamily!

Well Wishes to Damar
Our Wheelock and Elementary students spent this week creating hand made cards to send to Damar Hamlin wishing him a speedy recovery, and letting him know just how many fans he has out there. Go Bills!
Peaceful Bus Project
This week we began our Peaceful Bus Project, an initiative which welcomes our hard working bus drivers into our elementary classrooms. The drivers work with teachers and students to develop relationships and create a peaceful bus. It was a great event!
