Coralville Central Newsletter
April 20 - 24, 2020
Message from Principal Gahan
Dear Coralville Central Families,
Last week’s announcement that school will be closed for the remainder of the year really hit home with me. My deepest well wishes go out to all of you during this difficult time. I truly hope that you are able to find positives every day as we learn what our new normal looks and feels like. With that said, please lean on the Coralville Central teachers, staff, and myself if you need any guidance. I cannot wait for our paths to cross again someday soon.
There will be further announcements on when and how students are able to gather their materials from school. There is a lot that the District has to juggle right now when thinking about being able to access the buildings. We will let you know the plan when it becomes available.
There are communications coming from many different directions right now. If you have any questions whatsoever do not hesitate to reach out to any teacher/staff member or me. Gahan.andy@iowacityschools.org
Have a positive and productive week! Hang in there the best you can and reach out for help if you need it.

The Iowa City Community School District has established drive-through or walk-up meal pick-up locations at a number of sites while schools are closed.
The following sites will provide both lunch for the day and breakfast for the following day. Based on newly-released USDA guidance, parents/guardians/caregivers may pick up meals for children at Grab & Go meal sites unaccompanied by the child. This means that children do not need to come to the Grab & Go location in order for a guardian to pick-up a meal for the child. Children are welcome to come to the sites; however, this new guidance assists the District in providing even more meals to children throughout the community. Meals are free and available to children age 1 – 18. Free Grab & Go meals are available at each site from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, unless otherwise noted.
Meal Pick-up Sites:
City High School
Hills Elementary School (12:10 – 1:00 pm)
Mann Elementary School
North Central Junior High
Northwest Junior High
South East Junior High
Twain Elementary School
West High School
Wood Elementary School
Breckenridge Mobile Park (12:10 – 1:00 pm)
Cole’s Communities Mobile Park (11:00 – 11:50 am)
Forest View Mobile Park (12:10 – 1:00 pm)
Hilltop Mobile Park (11:00 – 11:50 am)
Holiday Lodge Mobile Park (11:00 – 11:50 am)
Lakeridge Mobile Park (11:00 – 11:50 am)
Regency Mobile Park (12:10 – 1:00 pm)
This program will be solely for pick-up of meals and meals will not be consumed on-site. The District encourages families to continue to be proactive in reducing the risk of COVID-19 by not congregating at the school site once meals have been distributed. Meals are intended for immediate consumption and should be stored/refrigerated as needed. Additional resources for food assistance can be found through the United Way of Johnson County.

Two Art Activities from Ms. Wade
Hi Coralville Central Cougar 6th Graders!
Here are a couple of recipes for art supplies you may want to try out at home! I hope you are all well & happy.
Make your own paint:
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
1 cup water
Food coloring
Then paint your favorite outdoor activity to do in Spring, your pet, your friends or whatever you like!
Make your own Moon dough (non-sticky):
1 cup corn starch
1/2 cup hair conditoner
Food coloring
Glitter (optional)
Lesson in color mixing - make red, blue and yellow moon dough (primary colors). Mix some of the yellow and red dough to get orange, mix some yellow and blue dough to get green and mix red and blue dough to get purple (secondary colors). Make a sculpture using all six of your primary and secondary colors. Have fun!!
Art Room News from Mrs. Lasansky
Hello Cougars! I have added a few projects for the week of 4.27-5.1.2020. These are optional and only require materials you already have in your home.
We celebrated Earth Day on 4.22.20 but why not contribute all year long. One way we can be problem solvers, waste less and reuse is to use supplies we already have. Both art projects I am sharing this week create zero waste.
I have created a Google Classroom to share lessons. It can also be used by students to post photos of their artwork and provide positive feedback to their classmates.

Some Great Tips from Mrs. Mandernach (Pick a Better Snack!)
Here are some resources to help families make healthy choices:
- https://www.choosemyplate.gov: Go to browse by audience: under browse by audience choose children or families. These resources can help children and their families make healthier choices. ChooseMyPlate.gov offers science-based advice to help kids and their parents build healthy habits.
- Move your body: Go on a hike and find a rock that your family can write on. Write grateful on it and then each person say something your grateful for.
For example: Things I’m grateful for: sunshine, food that fuels, flowers blooming.

Thoughts from Mr. Easley
As we all know kids have had more home time than normal. While Lexia and Dreambox are very important ways to continue learning sometimes a kid just needs something physical to do. How about some chores around your home? They will be moving around and will feel a sense of accomplishment when they are done while also doing something that will benefit other members of the household. What a great life lesson!!!!
Here is a link to an article that lists some chores that children of various ages acan complete.
