Principal Message
Dear Sequoia Families,
Our Read - A - Thon is in full swing and we have a few more days to go! Students have been doing a great job of logging their reading sessions and getting close to the 18 Million Word Challenge! If you haven't heard, I challenged our entire student body to read 18 million words during our Read - A - Thon. On top of that, there are incentives for classrooms in primary and upper grades who earn the most and read the most! The biggest prize of all (according to the students) for individual students who earn and read the most is to slime me at our last assembly of the year!
As a reminder, our LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan) feedback meeting is February 27th at 8:45 in the library. I will review the goals and strategies for last school year and would like to get feedback from you about what our school and district can improve on. In addition, we would like to get feedback from you on our school performance through a quick parent survey linked here: https://surveys.wested.org/csps/RR993KW. We are asking parents to complete this survey by March 13th. I've included more information from our assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction about the survey below.
Lastly, I wanted to let you know that as the 2019-2020 school year approaches its last few months, planning for next year begins. With this in mind, starting this year, all RVUSD schools will no longer accept teacher requests or learning preference forms from parents/guardians in regards to their children's placement into the next grade level. We are committed to balancing our classrooms and trust that our staff will make the best classroom placement decisions for all students. We appreciate your support in this matter as we encourage fair and equitable practices for all.
There's a lot of exciting things happening right now at Sequoia and in the district, so check out the info below!

Parent Survey Information
The Rincon Valley Union School District is partnering with the California Department of Education and WestEd to administer a school climate survey. We are asking that you complete this survey based on your child’s school.
Please note the following:
Your participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information you provide will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, and improve student achievement.
This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions.
All questions apply to Sequoia Elementary. Answer all questions based on you and your child’s experience at your school.
The results are for the use of Rincon Valley Union School District. The California Department of Education and WestEd will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the district.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE SURVEY
This survey will be open from February 24th - March 13th
If you have more than one child at this school, you will only need to complete one survey for this school. Please fill out just one survey about the school using your oldest child as a reference.
Access the survey using the following URL: Click here for the Sequoia Parent Survey
If the above link doesn’t work, you can type in: surveys.wested.org/csps/RR993KW
Thank you very much for taking the time to provide our district and schools with feedback as we continue to make our schools a safe learning environment for all students, staff, and families.
Thank you,
Mike Herfurth
