Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Greetings, Panther Families!
Four weeks of school are in the books and Panther Spirit is riding high! We want our students to have a succesful 2019-20, so we are highly encouraging them to communicate with their teachers and other staff members, and to reach out for help as needed. The sooner we can provide that support, the more likely it is that they will remain successful!
Mark your calendars now for our first Academic Awards Night of the year. We will begin at 5:30 pm in our Performing Arts Center on September 18th. Students will be notified next week of their medal should they qualify based on second semester grades from 2018-19.
Proud Principal,

AVID/DLI
- This past week our assistant principals had the opportunity to share their life's journey (with lessons learned), including college and career, with our 10th-12-th grade AVID classes. This provides our students with the understanding that everyone's journey is different and has a unique set of challenges that must be overcome in order to achieve a level of success one seeks.
- Our AVID and DLI team hosted our annual AVID Parent Night concurrently with our DLI Parent Night. This gave parents an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of each program. Because DLI is a new program to Corona High School, we were able to share the future outlook for our students.
NJROTC
- NJROTC is preparing for many exciting and challenging field trips to make 2019-20 another memorable year for our cadets! Our first trip will be Neptune Olympics on the beautiful beach at Coronado Island where competition includes boat races in the bay, physical fitness on the beach, Search and Rescue, water survival, and sandcastle building. Our finest cadets will compete against various other ROTC units throughout Southern California, having fun and making friends who share a common interest.
- Our Drill Teams are prepared for their first Drill Meet competition at Santiago High School on November 2nd. Other scheduled meets include the Pacifica meet on November 16th and Murrieta Mesa on December 7th.
- Sports days are always competitive and fun and our first one will be held at Troy High School in Fullerton on September 28th, followed by another great sports day at La Sierra High School on November 2nd.
- NJROTC is always looking for individuals who desire a challenge, have an interest in building leadership skills, want to be part of a family structure and organization filled with pride, respect and fun while receiving PE credit. You may contact 1st Sgt Zinn USMC/Ret (jzinn@cnusd.k12.ca.us) or Capt. Dale USN/Ret (jdale@cnusd.k12.ca.us) for more information regarding this amazing opportunity for your student.

Jess Hill Stadium
"Fans if I could please direct your attention to the 50 yard line for a special presentation…
Tonight we would like to recognize Corona Alumnus Jess Hill from the class of 1925. While at Corona HS Jess earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball, track and tennis. He was a member of CSF for 4 years, was ASB vice-president, senior class president and was class Salutatorian. After high school Jess attended Riverside Community College and later the University of Southern California. While at USC Jess played baseball, ran track and played football where he won a Rose Bowl. Jess was also the first person from Corona to play Major League baseball playing on the Yankees, Senators and Athletics.
Jess would later teach at and Coach and Corona HS before fighting in WW II in the Navy. When he returned home he went back to USC as the Track coach where his teams went undefeated winning 2 National Championships. Jess would later become the head football coach at USC going 45-17-1 and winning the 1953 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin. He became the first person at USC to win a Rose Bowl as both a player and a coach. Jess then became the Athletic Director at USC where over a 14 year span his teams won 45 Conference Titles and 29 NCAA Championships. After his years at USC Jess became the first commissioner of the PAC 12, was a member of the NCAA executive committee and was on the United States Track and Field Board of Directors.
Jess was also a Champion of civil rights during his time. As the head football coach at USC he took his team to play the Texas Longhorns. The hotel would not allow his black players to stay. Jess told his team to get back on the bus and head home refusing to play if they did not allow all his players to stay in the team hotel. Management gave in allowing them to stay and the next night for only the second time in history, black players took the field against white players in a college football game in Texas. USC won the game!
Representing Jess Hill tonight is his son Jess Hill Jr and his wife Barbara. Grandson Bob Carter. Granddaughter Jennie Hill and her 3 sons Nicolas, Jonathan and Samuel. Grandson Doug Hill and his fiancée Rachel. Let’s please give them a round of applause. The Corona Norco Unified School District Board of Education, along with the Corona High School Administration and the Corona History Association would like to immortalize the immense contributions Jess Hill has bestowed on the city of Corona. In Honor of this remarkable man “Panther Stadium” will forever be known as Jess Hill Stadium!
Panther Nation, for the first time in the history of Corona High School I would like to make this announcement, 'Welcome to the campus of Corona High School and Jess Hill Stadium.'"

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
- National Suicide Prevention Week: September 8-14, 2019
- World Suicide Prevention Day: Working Together to Prevent Suicide (September 10th): A time to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness, and to connect with those who are having suicidal ideation to treatment services. It’s important to make sure individuals who have been affected by a suicide loss have access to the resources they need. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month which assists in sharing resources and awareness around the issues of suicide prevention. Although it is extremely important to address this year-round, this month highlights these issues and provides a time for mental health advocates, prevention organizers, survivors, allies, and community members to come together and unite to promote suicide awareness. According to the Jason Foundation, which is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth, shared that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for our youth ages 10-24 (2016, CDC WISQARS) http://jasonfoundation.com/
- Counselors, teachers, administration, clerks, custodians, parents, adults, and friends are in a key position to notice signs and to reach out to get help. Awareness and education are the first steps to prevention. Suicide is preventable.
- Threats or comments about killing themselves, also known as suicidal ideation, can begin with seemingly harmless thoughts like “I wish I wasn’t here” but can become more overt and dangerous
- Increased alcohol and drug use
- Aggressive behavior
- Social withdrawal from friends, family and the community
- Dramatic mood swings
- Talking, writing or thinking about death
- Impulsive or reckless behavior
- Giving away important possessions
- Feeling unbearable pain (emotional pain or physical pain)
- Talk about being a burden to others
