Monthly Counseling Update

In order to best serve students and staff, I am now exclusively at Solon Intermediate on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My previous schedule split my days between both schools, and often led to confusion amongst students and staff regarding my availability. During those times at Solon Intermediate, I will continue to deliver classroom lessons, provide small group opportunities, and also work one on one with students.

During the month of January, students in 4th and 5th grade will be reviewing empathy and learning about kindness. We will also be discussing the difference between bullying and unkind behavior and skills necessary to respond in both situations. Students will also be introduced to a classroom binder that will be available as a resource for students to learn strategies to self regulate daily behaviors. The end of the month will concentrate on skills for learning that are important for their day to day learning such as skills for listening, focussing attention, self-talk and assertiveness.

4th and 5th grade will both have small groups being offered beginning in the next couple of weeks. The first 10 weeks I will be offering a family changes group called Common Ground. Common Ground will be for students that have experienced changes in their family dynamics as a result of divorce, separation, or loss. If your son or daughter has or is experiencing one of these situations and would benefit from some extra support, please contact me at 319-624-3401x1503 or hpentico@solon.k12.ia.us to enroll your son or daughter in Common Ground. Groups will be forming in the next two weeks, so be sure to notify me of your interest in your student participating by January 20th, 2020.

Students at SIS will be participating in a kindness campaign. The kickoff for this campaign will be kicked off at a school wide assembly on Thursday, January 23rd. More details will follow after the assembly. Ask your students how they are spreading kindness throughout their school and community.
