Message from the Principal
Dear Woodside HS Community:
Cal Hi Sports Special Feature - U.S. Bank Inspirational Athlete
For senior Cameron O'Connor, the sport of water polo and the supportive Woodside High School community have been a positive source of energy for him throughout his four years. Last week, his story and his family's unconditional love and support, along with his shoutout to his teammates, Coach Bruno and our Wildcat community were featured in an inspiring video on Cal Hi Sports. Click here for Cameron's story.
The month of October is one of the most action-filled months of the school year: students and teachers have established their routines and the fall sports seasons are fully underway, and on Thursday evening, the Talent Show highlights some of our known and not so known hidden talents. We have our first overnight College Bus Tour leaving this week for Southern California universities and colleges with many of our AVID juniors and some seniors. We are gearing up for Spirit Week and Homecoming festivities at the end of the month. Next week, on October 12th, all students will be involved in a variety of grade-level focused College and Career Day activities:
9th Grade: Every freshman will go on a bus trip to one of our local 4-year college campuses.
10th Grade: Sophomores were surveyed and given the chance to "opt in" to take the PSAT; those not taking the PSAT will go on a local college bus trip.
11th Grade: Juniors will participate in the PSAT - excellent preparation and practice for the SAT or ACT that many juniors will elect to take for college admissions.
12th Grade: Seniors have the most variety in what they will participate in and have started to indicate their choices during their senior meetings in September:
- SAT - the final opportunity for seniors
- College Essay Writing Workshop - ObiCoach - Sign up - WHS FREE Workshop
- Career Speaker Sessions
- FAFSA / Financial Aid Information
- Community College Presentations
We are still looking for career speakers who would like to share about their jobs, industries, paths toward a career. Click on this Google Form if you are interested in sharing on Wednesday, October 12th about your unique work with our Woodside Seniors. Deadline to let us know is Tuesday, October 4th! Please share with your neighbors/colleagues. Most companies and supervisors encourage this type of community outreach to local schools and will offer flexible release time...please ask your supervisor or HR department. The following industry sectors are at the top of our seniors' interests:
- Business/Finance/Marketing
- Engineering/Computer Science
- Medicine/Healthcare
- Psychology/Counseling/Social Work
- Visual and Performing Arts
- Education
- Trades (Construction, HVAC, Electrician, Culinary)
- Other - For instance, a parent reached out and noted that "Designer" was not on our list and design is found in so many different aspects of our lives, so if you do not see your job title / industry listed, please come and share your story!

Our Annual Campaign Has Begun!
We hope you had the chance to read the Woodside High School Foundation Annual Report delivered to your mailboxes last week. The report explains how, due to the funds The Foundation raised from parent donations last year, all students this year will continue to have access to a rich array of academic classes, a broad set of electives, and small class sizes. These funds from our Woodside families are so crucial to making Woodside the thriving hub of teaching and learning it is today. You can also see parent donations at work through this video.
The Annual Campaign to raise funds for next year is in full swing now. Every gift makes a difference. To make a gift, visit https://www.whsfoundation.org/donate.

Mentoring for WHS's Green and Graphics & Tech Academies
Consider Mentoring
Want to make a difference in a teenager's life? Had a mentor yourself or wish you did? Easy communication in person as well as through email, phone, and zoom.
Mentoring Program: WHS Green and Graphics & Tech Academies are looking for career mentors. The mentor program will pair students with professionals to discuss both academic and career goals. The student's career interests are wide-ranging from technology and design to environmental policy and sustainable careers. I'm hoping that you, or someone that you know, might be able to participate in this program as a mentor.
Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per month from October 2022 to May 2023, with a set curriculum that is focused on career exploration and developing the students' business communication goals. Key deliverables include an elevator pitch, SMART goals, resumes, mock interviews, and a job shadow.
The First Introductory meeting is planned for November 3 or 4th, depending on your student's class.
Signup: Please email whsmentor@seq.org or click here to sign up.
