Black History Month Video! Historic Takoma: They Called Him “Mr. Lee”
This video looks at the life and legend of Lee A. Jordan— the school custodian who became a community leader and coach and mentor to many of Takoma Park’s youth, both Black and White, during an era of social change and upheaval. While working at Takoma Park Junior High and Montgomery Blair High School, Jordan used organized sports to inspire and motivate local young people. A local baseball star, Jordan founded the city’s Boys and Girls clubs, breaking racial barriers by organizing the first integrated recreational sports teams in Montgomery County. Called the “unofficial mayor" of Takoma Park, he represented the city's African American community before the city council and its official mayor, campaigning for services that would improve the streets, neighborhoods, and lives of the town's Black residents.

MCPS is partnering with the Anti-Defamation League to provide two additional sessions of the January 24, 2023 professional learning session. All staff members are invited to attend the virtual session that will focus on understanding and responding to antisemitism in our current time.
