The Violin

Basic Information
Development of the Violin
The earliest violin used features from the rebec, the Renaissance fiddle, and the lira da braccio. It adopted the tuning system (tuned in fifths) from the Rebec. The shape came from the Renaissance Fiddle and the Lira Da Braccio because it gave a bigger sound and made bowing easier.
Purpose and Changes
The fingerboard of the violin was made longer, and it was also set at more of an angle to support the tension of the strings being increased. The increased tension of the strings, coupled with the change in the fingerboard, resulted in the violin having an increased range and sound projection. The violin was initially used for vocal and dance accompaniment. By the seventeenth century, composers like Monteverdi began to incorporate violins into instrumental ensembles, where they eventually replaced the viola da gamba.
