Engage 21st Century Career Skills: Communication-Collaboration-Creativity-Critical Thinking
November 16 and 17, 2015
November 16 presenters and panelists will encourage participants to imagine the future workplace, and consider how integration of gaming and related project-based learning can prepare students for future success.
Those who attend on November 16 are invited to a “game design experience” on the morning of November 17, where they will learn how gaming can support the power of project-based learning in helping student develop the Four Cs of 21st Century Learning.
These two days are brought to you by two major collaborators that have worked together to design and produce this conference:
Southeastern Regional Education Service Center ( SERESC), a non-profit educational collaborative, and
Zulama , a company of innovative professionals with extensive backgrounds in education who care deeply about improving schools and preparing students for exciting futures.

Morning Session, PART 1: Moderated “Fireside Chat” Presenters and panelists will encourage participants to imagine the future workplace, and consider how integration of gaming and related project based learning can prepare students for future success.
· What do we mean when we say the “left side-right side" brain and how does this relate to the knowledge economy?
· What are the key skills required for employment in the game design industry?
· Why is collaboration and communications so important?
· Why is teamwork essential?
· How do the following get employed in game design?
· science, technology, engineering, math
· Screenwriting ( creative writing, storytelling)
· Game design- incorporating critical thinking and creativity
· Principles of project management and iteration
· How transferable are game design skills to other industries?

What Any Game Designer Needs to Know. This session will focus on stages and components of game design, effectively using games in various subject areas, and adapting game design to groups and individuals. Plan to experience the 4C's of 21st Century Career Skills .

Educators who:
- Are interested in the concepts, development and use of game design as part of curriculum and instruction.
- Are interested in knowing: why educational gaming is being used in curriculum and instruction; what is involved in game design; how educators can design games for their lessons every day; and how others have addressed the challenges and benefits of game design.

Dan Roy, Presenter, Morning Session
Dan is the founder of Skylight Games, a social enterprise helping people of all ages fall in love with learning through games. He has designed games for learning for 13 years, and his work has been supported by the Gates, Hewlett, and Verizon foundations and the US Department of Education. His newest game, “Lyriko: Learn Languages with Music” is available on iOS and Android this Fall (lyriko.com). Dan has also made games to teach math, science, and history. He holds a BS in computer Science from UMass Amherst and a SM in Comparative Media Studies from MIT.
Masako Roy, Morning Session Featured Panelist
Masako is a Producer at Skylight Games, coordinating translation, art, quality assurance, usability testing, video production, and Asian marketing. Before joining Skylight Games, she worked in Tokyo for five years making textbooks, games, toys and websites to teach math, science and morals. She has a passion for improving education for kids who don't have many learning opportunities, leading her to create learning tools for kids in developing countries throughout Asia. She holds BAs in International Political Science and Economics and Japanese Language Education from Waseda University in Japan.
Afternoon Session: Early Adopter Experience
Day 1 Afternoon Session Details
Early Adopters of Educational Gaming Technology from the Northeast, New England and Nearby will talk about bringing Educational Gaming to curriculum and instruction in their schools, districts or member regions.
Prominent among the presenters are members of the Cattaraugus-Allegheny, NY Board of Cooperative Educational Services (CA-BOCES). CA-BOCES representatives will provide an overview of their work in introducing an Entertainment Technology Curriculum to schools in New York State. They will share the vision the BOCES have in committing to a blended and project-based learning model based on Game Design. They will include incorporation of the Four Cs, and support for the intense interest of students desiring careers in the game industry.
The CA-BOCES representatives will be joined by Norma-Jean Audet, Technology Director of RSU 4 , ME, who will share the ME RSU 4 experience in early adoption of educational gaming, including observations of students' learning and engagement at both Oak Hill Middle and Oak Hill High School.

About Day Two
Day Two is an invitation for Day 1 attendees to further explore and experience the world of game design and programming.
Zulama, collaborative partner in bringing you this two day event, will provide the design and resources for the gaming experience.
Early Adopters from the afternoon of Day 1 will be available to facilitate.
Who Should Attend? Day 2
Educators who
- Would like to experience the development and use of games, with a platform highlighting the "4 C's" provided by Zulama, and facilitated by BOCES educators who are experienced in using educational gaming in their schools. Two rotating sessions, 75 minutes each.
Would like to hear more about Zulama Modern Learning. Representatives will provide a 60-Minute in-depth review of the Zulama Entertainment Technology Curriculum and Learning Management System.

Cost: $215.00 for the Day 1 Conference which includes an invitation to attend the Day 2 gaming experience. Early registration discount: $195.00 if registration is confirmed by November 9, 2015.
Attended the Day 1 Conference, but can't attend the Day 2 gaming experience? You are welcome to send a substitute.
