Week 25 Update (2/25)
This is our 25th week of school as we remain committed to providing you with a regular update for the 2020-2021 school year.
This past week our students had their first asynchronous snow day; this allows us to make some progress with content and learning while also balancing the difference between the demands/expectations of our synchronous remote learning days with the potential joys of a snow day.
This week, we will start tomorrow, Friday, February 26th, and continue through Monday, March 1st, and Tuesday, March 2nd, a series of asynchronous learning days as our staff is getting their 2nd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Our vaccine clinic for our 170+ employees was spread out over several days, and the potential known side-effects would have likely made it impossible to staff each day adequately.
Our Huskie Pack has done an amazing job fighting back against COVID-19, with daily health screeners, wearing masks, social distancing, and washing/sanitizing hands. Also, our staff and custodians have done their part to disinfect and sanitize our buildings. After six months of school, we understand that a handful of students/parents have issues with fading of clothing material that might come in contact with seating areas that have been cleaned. Please know that we are sorry if you are experiencing this; however, we have not changed our proven cleaning products or procedures since August. If things are looking differently coming out of the wash at home, we would recommend talking with your child and advising them not to sit in chairs or desks that are still damp from cleaning supplies but rather wait for them to dry or add a layer to avoid the staining of clothing material by requesting a paper towel ensuring the space is dry before sitting down.
Yesterday one of our staff shared a post about how woman drivers (driving robots) were actually good, this post cause some frustration, as it should and ultimately was removed. In 2021 there is no room for comments that may appear to slight someone based on their gender or other factors, for that matter. Although this post was presented and received poorly, the underline message was intended to be inspirational. All too often, young ladies have been either turned away or turned off by STEM-related activities. Still, here at Hemlock Public School District, we are pleased by the level and depth of our female students' participation in STEM-based activities, including things like being part of the drive team for robotics. We champion women to be leaders in the classroom, in competition, in the work world, and every facet of life.
The amount of support and positive energy from all stakeholders for our school system is outstanding. Hemlock Public School District's mission and vision are to innovate, collaborate, and educate our community of learners.
It continues to be exciting to report that we have not had any new school-related cases of COVID-19 or school-related quarantines since our return to school after the holiday break. All the best,

MHSAA Spring Sports Update
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Feb. 22 – The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association approved today an adjustment to the Spring 2021 schedule delaying the start of practices in those sports one week to March 22 and competition to March 26 to accommodate a later end to Winter sports this season. The calendar change should alleviate pressures on indoor facility usage and athletes changing seasons with Winter sports concluding up to two weeks later this school year after a delayed start due to COVID-19.
The Council based its decision in part on feedback from a survey of MHSAA member high schools, which saw 74 percent favoring a delay in Spring sports activity of at least one week. State coaches associations for Spring sports also were consulted. Generally, the great majority of Michigan schools are unable to begin consistent Spring sports outdoor activity and competition until early April.
All Spring sports tournament dates remain as originally scheduled, with MHSAA Finals in baseball, softball and girls soccer concluding the 2020-21 postseason June 19.
The entire Spring sports season was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. However, the Council approved an allowance for Spring teams to meet for voluntary practices over 16 contact days this past September and October. General conditioning with an unlimited number of students is currently allowed, with other out-of-season training (four-player workouts, open gyms/facilities) allowed to continue through March 21, with Council having eliminated the preseason downtime restriction for Spring sports this year.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by more than 1,500 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract more than 1.4 million spectators each year.

Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Program
The United States Fish & Wildlife Service is accepting Michigan Junior Duck Stamp entries. All entries must be postmarked by Sunday, March 15th.
Each year thousands of students across the nation enter the contest. In 2020, 170+ students in grades K through 12 participated in Michigan. Public schools, private schools and students from home schools were represented. At each state, territory or district competition, 100 winners are chosen with one top winner, called the "Best of Show." The Best of Show's then compete in the national competition. One image is selected to become the Federal Junior Duck Stamp.
Entries for the Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest are due by March 15 of every year. Artwork must be of a North American duck, goose or swan. Registration information can be found on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge's Junior Duck Stamp Program webpage. You may also visit the Federal Junior Duck Stamp webpage for more information on the contest.
