A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
DCPS has shared a lot of pertinent information regarding the end of the school year and fall. You may find much of that guidance under "News and Updates". Updates include school issued technology devices and materials, in-person and virtual learning for next school year, and health and safety measures. If you need any clarity, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov. Over the coming weeks, we will also be sharing information on opportunities for families to visit the Hyde-Addison ES facility.
Please keep you and your loved ones safe. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov. Please visit dcpsreopenstrong.com or backtoschool.dc.gov for DCPS resources.
Kindest Regards,

NEWS & UPDATES
Full Return to In-Person Learning Next School Year
We expect the overwhelming majority of our students to return to full-time in-person learning in the fall! For SY21-22, here’s what families can expect at school to maintain a safe environment for in-person learning:
- HVAC enhancements allow for well-ventilated spaces at every school, including state-of-the-art HEPA filters in classrooms and air quality sensors throughout the building.
- Practice safe routines: All staff, students, and visitors must wear a mask or face covering, and daily PPE and hygiene supplies will be provided.
- Enhanced cleaning protocols for high-touch surfaces, and a deep cleaning completed after a suspected or reported COVID-19 case.
- Space arrangements: Students should be separated as far as possible, and individual desks and tables are to be facing the same direction to the extent feasible.
- Student meals: Pre-K and Kindergarten students will eat in the classroom and all other grades will eat in the cafeteria. Social distancing should be followed while eating and drinking, to the extent feasible.
- Student cohort interactions will be limited to the extent feasible, but there will be no cap for student or staff cohort interactions in any grade.
- Screen for illness: Students and staff will complete a daily “Ask, Ask, Look” screening, but temperatures will not be taken upon arrival at school.
- COVID-19 reporting protocols: Schools will report positive cases within a school community if a person has been in the building during their infectious period and follow a quarantine protocol. Additional information about asymptomatic testing will be shared over the summer.
Limited Virtual Learning Next Year
DCPS is making a virtual experience possible for students with medical needs. Families that have students with medical needs are encouraged to complete the virtual learning registration process by July 6, 2021. Virtual students will be assigned to a DCPS teacher, but it is not guaranteed to be a teacher from Hyde-Addison. Several FAQ's are shared below:
Are all students eligible for virtual learning?
Yes. All DCPS students in grades PK-12 who provide a medical consent form signed by their doctor/nurse practitioner will be eligible for virtual learning. Students with medical needs unrelated to COVID-19 should follow the guidelines for the Home and Hospital Instruction Program (HHIP).
What if my child does not have a medical need for virtual instruction, but I prefer to keep them in remote learning?
DCPS believes that the best place for a student to learn is in the classroom and that is why we will fully reopen for every student, every day with their teachers and classmates this fall. Virtual learning in SY21-22 is limited to students with medical needs. All other students are expected to attend school in-person.
My child does not have a medical need, but their sibling/parent/caregiver does. Can I still register my child for virtual?
Virtual learning in SY21-22 is limited to individual students with medical needs as documented by their physician or nurse practitioner.
What if I register for virtual learning but then I change my mind?
Registering for virtual learning is a semester commitment. If your child’s health condition changes and you no longer need virtual learning, you are not guaranteed the opportunity to return to in-person learning until the start of the second semester which begins at the end of January 2022.

Be on the LSAT! Nominations Now Open!
We know that Hyde-Addison is only the best that it can be with the support of the entire school community. One way that we ensure our community is working together to support our children is through the Local School Advisory Team (LSAT). The LSAT is a group of elected and appointed members that exists for every DCPS school. The parents, guardians, teachers, non-instructional staff, and community members that serve on the LSAT meet monthly to advise school leaders on school priorities.
We appreciate everyone who dedicated time and energy to serving on the LSAT this year. It is now time for us to recruit new LSAT representatives for School Year 2021-2022 and I hope you will consider serving. We want to ensure that our diverse school community is represented, so please share this opportunity with others in the Hyde-Addison parent community.
Parents/Guardians will nominate and then vote on 4 representatives. You may nominate as many individuals as you would like, as well as self-nominate. Please try to confirm others’ interest in advance of nominating them. Nominations and elections for the teachers and non-instructional staff members are handled by the union representatives. Community members and student representatives are asked to join by consensus once the other LSAT members are determined.
All nominations and voting will be done online this year. Our nomination period will be from June 1 to June 15. Afterward, we will share additional communication detailing how to vote between June 15-June 29.
