Weekly Update ~ December 19, 2016
National Blue Ribbon Celebration
Wednesday morning, December 21st, the faculty, staff, and students will celebrate being named a National Blue Ribbon School. We are hosting an all-school assembly at 9:30 a.m. in the Pat Patt (Elementary) gymnasium. We have invited local community officials, legislators, and former administrators, some whom have agreed to say a few words of congratulations.
We will have a jam-packed gymnasium, but parents are welcome to join us. We will have some limited seating available. If you would like to attend, please send your name in an email to Kelly Pickard at pickard@ogschool.org
It could be standing room only and we would like to plan as best as we can for the event. Thank you!

First Trophy for the Robotic Team
Sunday, December 5th, the Robotic team participated in the Fifth Annual Lego League competition held at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Mundelein. The team consisted of the following students: Desi Nainar, Megan Nordstrom, Kevin Joseph, Michael Weaver, Mark Ekdahl, Katie Stone, Jack Regan, Leenah Ehsan, Jonathan Zhang, and Connor Swatzyna.
The students spent countless hours during lunch-recess and after school engineering pieces for the robot, programming it to accomplish specific missions on the field, and researching possible ways to help animals in our community for the service component. The students developed many areas of need and decided on helping shelter animals and building bluebird houses for the Lake County Forest Preserves. The team presented their service project at the judging session and explained how they raised money by selling popsicles for Placing Paws, collected blankets for the North Chicago Animal Control dogs, and built six bluebird houses from donated lumber. Working as a team, sharing ideas, learning technology skills, and sharpening their programing of the robot, were just a few things this team accomplished.
They also earned the first trophy in the Robotics Club history, the "Judges Award", for persevering through difficult circumstances. Being successful is always a team effort so I want to give a HUGE shout out to Mr. and Mrs. Weaver, for getting the birdhouses built and delivered, and to Ms. Pickard for allowing us to interview her. We couldn’t have done it without all of you. As a fifth year sponsor, I am so proud to have guided them through the struggles of learning robotics, strategizing the competition field, and having a successful competition.
