Volume 20, Issue 10: June 2023
June 2023
Wow, it is June and the school year is about wrap up.
Congratulations to our students and parents on a successful school year. When you reflect on this past year, spend some time on the accomplishments and growth the children have made. Being a positive energetic middle schooler takes so much more than just being a kid. The balance of home, friends, school, activities, and growing up is a never-ending journey, but flourishes during the early teenage years.
As the year comes to a close, be certain to look at the finals schedule on our website for important, dates, times, bussing, and exam information.
Wishing you good health and happiness,
Timothy P. Martin, Ed.D.

June 2023
First and foremost, thank you for a wonderful year! Our students (your children), our staff, and yourselves are amazing to work with. I am very proud to refer to myself as a member of the IMS community. Also, the PTA deserves a special thank you for their generosity, hard work, and concern. It's hard to believe that the end of the school year is coming upon us. June is time of celebration and reflection of accomplishment, but before we can enjoy the festivities we must keep our eye on ball, be sure that all that hard work, care, concern, and effort you have put in has prepared you for final exams and if appropriate regents exams.
Eight graders you will be missed, but rest assure that you will always have a place to return to call home as well as a special place in our hearts. Be sure to embrace high school, enjoy it, work hard, celebrate the big and small moments. It will go fast. Soon you will be considering colleges & careers. Be sure to have fun and follow your heart as you track down your purpose and set a course that will last a lifetime.
Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to view photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our new Google Site has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail at cjuengereks@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.
Always remember, “The Journey of Ten Thousand Steps begin with a single step.”
Be Sure to Always, Always, Enjoy.
Always enjoy,

June 2023
Greetings Islip Middle School,
Congratulations on entering the final month of the 2022-2023 school year. Each of you should be extremely proud of your accomplishments thus far, however, it’s not over yet! Before you enter vacation mode, you must buckle down and finish the school year off strong. Finals and Regents’ exams are right around the corner, please make sure you are studying and well prepared so you can do your personal best.
Eighth Graders:
Congratulations on your graduation from middle school, it has been a pleasure getting to know and work with you this school year. Next year you will begin the next chapter of your life, high school. I wish each one of you the best of luck on your journeys through young adulthood. If you ever need any advice or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sixth and Seventh Graders:
Next year you will be the leaders of our school. This is a big responsibility, especially since we all want IMS to be a school where every child and adult wants to be excited to come to every day. Get your well needed rest during your summer vacations and let’s all come back next year with a positive mindset and have the best year yet!
I leave you with this quote:
“Although no one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.”

ADVISORY THEME OF THE MONTH
June-Reflection
We can all learn from our past experiences. Think about the many good things you have accomplished and share them with your children. If there are any events you could change, what would they be and how could you or others benefit from that reflective action?
National Junior Honor Society was formed as an organization designed to complement and encourage high standards of student performance in the beginning years of secondary school.
We are proud to announce that on May 15, fifty-eight students in both seventh and eighth grade were inducted into the Arista Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at Islip Middle School. This honor is one they have earned through their excellent grades, academic standing, and leadership. This evening was our opportunity to recognize their achievement. On the momentous night, inductees raised their right hand and took an oath to continue to uphold their qualifications of scholarship, service, character, leadership, and citizenship in their home and school community.
Thank you to the current NJHS Officers that helped to induct our new members, IMS administrators and teachers, our distinguished Board of Education, Central Administrators, family, and friends who came out to support and cheer for these hard working, dedicated students.
On Friday May 19th, sixth graders in the district’s EXCEL program and students from 7th grade FACS program took a historical walking food tour on Islip’s Main Street. Students were accompanied by the EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson, FACS teacher Natalie DeSena, Catherine Romano of the Islip Historical Society, and Melissa Horn from Islip High School’s Functional Academics program.
The participating middle schoolers began their day with an educational visit to Manhattan Sweets Bakery. They learned about baking techniques and observed the machinery used to create beautiful pastries! Lunch at The Pizzeria was next, where students took a tour of the kitchen and got an up-close demonstration of pizza making and dough tossing. The Pizzeria treated the students to a complementary pizza lunch and soda. The tour concluded with a stroll to Coyle’s Ice Cream, where they learned how delicious homemade ice cream is made and got to enjoy some sweet treats!
This year, the Islip Historical Society and students from Islip High School’s Functional Academics program provided the middle schoolers with glimpse into the rich history of Islip’s Main Street. On the walk to the restaurant establishments, stops were made along the many historic markers on Main Street where students were told of significant events that occurred in the town’s past. This field trip provided students with an ideal way to connect with their community and provided a behind the scenes glimpse of business owners pursuing their passions. Thank you to Manhattan Sweets, The Pizzeria, Coyle’s Ice Cream, and the Islip Historical Society for making this field trip a huge success!
June 2023
Counselors spent the greater part of the month of May meeting with students to help ease their anxieties about upcoming transitions.
Middle school counselors visited Commack Road Elementary School and Sherwood Elementary School to discuss the many differences they will encounter at the Middle School in just a few short months. We discussed classes, schedules, and exciting new ventures, such as lockers and the various food choices at lunch! We hope that our upcoming 6th graders are feeling at ease and excited about beginning their middle school journey! Keep an eye out for our walk-through that will occur during the month of August. We can’t wait to see you all next year!
Current 7th graders were also visited by their counselor to discuss the differences between 7th and 8th grade. At Islip Middle School, 8th graders are introduced to high school level courses (Algebra, Foreign Language, and Earth Science), and Regents exams at the end of 8th grade. Students were reminded of the many academic supports that we have in place for them, such as extra help, homework help, and tutors from our very own Islip High School. We hope our 7th graders are feeling excited about their new endeavors!
Upcoming 9th graders were visited by members of Islip High School’s Buccaneer University to participate in their transition day. High school students visited 8th grade advisories, showed a video introducing the high school, and answered questions. At the end of the day, 8th graders went out to the high school football and participated in games and activities with those same high school students. It was a great day of fun!
Also on the topic of transitions, new entrants met with their counselors for a New Entrant Reflection. Here at the middle school, we want every student to feel like they have a voice! New entrants met with their counselors to discuss their transition to the middle school. They were given the opportunity to share things that helped with their transition to the middle school, and what could have been better. Being new to a school can be very intimidating, and we want to do what we can to make it easier! Hearing student perspective helps us to ensure that being a new student at IMS is as seamless as can be! Here is a picture of some of our new entrants!
The end of the year is rapidly winding down, though it feels like just yesterday we were starting the 2022-2023 school year! June will be filled with exciting end-of-year activities, such as grade-level field days, the 8th grade breakfast, yearbook distribution, and the 8th grade dance! 8th graders: don’t forget to purchase your ticket to the 8th grade dance by June 9th!
Schedules for next year’s classes will be released at the end of August on your Infinite Campus Portal. If you have any questions regarding your child’s courses for next year, please feel free to reach out to your child’s counselor. Students, make sure that you are able to log on to your student portal now before schedules are released! Counselors are in the office through the end of June, and will not be available over the summer to reset portal passwords.
As Regents and final exams quickly approach, be sure to take a look at the testing schedule, located on the IMS Google site. For those of you taking a Regents exam, be sure to leave your cell phone at home, as having a phone while taking the exam will invalidate your score! Here are some helpful study tips for your Regents and final exams.
We hope you have a wonderful, and relaxing Summer. We can’t wait to see you back here in September!
