You should have already received two seperate communication items from me earlier today regarding a tragedy that has overcome our school, and that is the passing of one our students in a car accident yesterday evening. Our counselors, along with the district crisis team, were here to support both students and staff affected by the loss. Additional support will be available through next week as needed to ensure that our Panthers have the resources to get through this difficult time.

I'd like to acknowledge our staff, students, and crisis team for their resilience and support they offered each other today. This is not an easy time, but it is during times like this that the Panther Family comes together and shows its true support for those we care about. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family in their time of need. Pending permission of the family, we will communicate information regarding services as appropriate.

Testing begins Monday, May 7th per schedule below. These dates are set by College Board and due to test security nationwide, we cannot alter these dates. AP exams are important for our college-bound students due to the fact that they can potentially earn college credit (depending on the score earned and the respective college's/university's AP policy). As with any high-stakes test, please ensure that your student gets plenty of rest the night before and has a healthy breakfast the morning of the exam. Good luck, Panthers! Every year a new high school student is selected to serve on our district's board to represent all CNUSD students. I am proud to announce that next year's student representative will be our very own Panther, Alexis Saldana, who has also been recently voted in as our ASB President. Her tenure will begin on May 7th, the next board meeting.

The Temescal Palms Lodge in Corona celebrates students from all CNUSD high schools, as well as educators such as Teacher of the Year, Counselor of the Year, and other recognitions. This year, Stephanie Pompa (a 4-year AVID student) was selected to represent Corona High School. This award is aimed to recognize students who have overcome adversity and continue to be successful. Stephanie will continue her education at CBU with aspirations of becoming a heart surgeon. Congratulations, Stephanie!

I am proud to announce that our very own Panther, Jennie Barrera, is this year's AVID scholarship recipient! She was recognized at the AVID Scholarship Night in San Bernardino on April 30th. I also recently announced in the Panther Prowl that she has also been selected to deliver a speech in front of thousands of AVID seniors from throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties at UCR on May 11th. Way to go, Jennie!

At this year's annual RCOE Student Academic Awards on April 22nd, our Top 3 academic Panthers were recognized. From left to right below, Matthew Nguyen (salutatorian), Emily Silvis (salutatorian), and Mikayla McMillan (valedictorian) represented Corona High School. At this event, RCOE recognizes the top scholars from all high schools in Riverside County. All principals, superintendents, and select board members associated with each school were in attendance, including County Superintendent Dr. Judy White, to acknowledge and congratulate this amazing accomplishment. I am extremely proud of these three students and am happy to announce that all three will be attending UCLA in the fall. Congratulations, scholars!!!

Every year our district recognizes students from all 50 schools for their successes. Each comprehensive high school submitted nominees from five categories (see below) to be recognized at the Tribute Awards held at Norco High School on April 25th. This year's nominees represented Corona High School and I am impressed and extremely proud of each one!

Every year the Circle City Kiwanis Club recognizes two students from each of our high schools at a student recognition luncheon held at Sizzler in Corona. We are given flexibility in selecting our student recipients. At Corona High School, we have decided to recognize students that have demonstrated resilient behaviors and continue to successfully move forward. This year's recipients are Jennifer Rojas and Jose Suarez. Jennifer is on Prom Court and in AVID, while Jose is part of our first 4-year cohort of our STEM Academy Health Careers Pathway. Both students have proven that drive and determination can overcome challenges outside our control. Congratulations to these two Panthers!

In order for administrators to clear their Administrative Services credential, they must engage in some type of induction program, or study. Our district is fortunate enough to offer its own induction program for our newer administrators rather than having to go through an outside agency. Every week, our district features a staff member to read a book as part of our #CNUSDReads campaign. Six of our very own college-bound senior Panthers were selected to attend UCLA's annual college signing day event that included special guests and this year's keynote speech was delivered by former First Lady, Michelle Obama. This year's event was held on May 1st and is intended to promote pursuing a college education. On May 1st, AVID hosted its annual College Signing Day event in our Performing Arts Center to recognize our AVID students committed to furthering their education beyond high school graduation.

This month's CNUSD AVID update featured our very own program! Read below for more exciting CHS AVID news!

The CHS Auto Shop will be participating in the Cinco de Mayo Parade down Sixth St. on Saturday, May 4th. We will have our 1959 Chevy Apache “Project Mater” in the parade with our School Board President and long-time Corona supporter, Mrs. Mary Ybarra, riding inside! Please come out and support our program, the City of Corona, and Cinco de Mayo!

Corona High School has received so much financial support for our Stem Academy/CTE programs over the years that allows us to provide some amazing learning opportunities for our students. Earlier this week we had members of our district's Business Services division take a tour of our shops/labs including Automotive Technology, Woodworking, Welding, Engineering, and our newest program Aviation. Our guests were extremely impressed with the programs that they have supported.

Our Biomed students explored the idea of bionic humans and its potential implications for the future of healthcare. What a great example of preparing our students with today's 21st century skills to prepare for the future that we cannot predict.

Our STEM Academy hosted our first 4-year cohort banquet on April 26th. Students were recognized for heir academic success, as well as being part of our first graduating cohort! As part of their capstone Project Lead The Way (https://www.pltw.org/) course, students have to research a real-life problem and develop a plan to address it. These presentations will be held on May 8th and May 16th. This will be the first cohort to wear the STEM Biomed stole at graduation.

Whether a senior or freshman, actor or technician, there is a spot for everyone in the Theatre Department. Students in our film photography class have been assigned an exciting project of recreating a popular album cover as part of their culminating project. Our photographers had to apply lighting concepts and other techniques to recreate their selected cover.

Parents can also visit our registrar's office between 7:30 am and 2:00 pm if you need assistance with or access to a computer. As of April 28th, 54.5% of our students have completed the online registration process. To avoid any potential delays in your student starting with us on the first day of school, please complete your registration as soon as possible.

• NJROTC will host our annual Military Ball on May 17th. This event will include awards, senior departure farewells, a change of command ceremony, dinner, and dancing. Invites will be sent out in the next few weeks and we look forward to a spectacular evening with parents, guests, and cadets!

• During the month of May, NJROTC will conduct many honors with our Color Guard detail. Our team will perform at the Civic Center in Corona on May 2nd, our Military Ball on the 17th, Corona High School Senior Awards Night the 20th, Veterans Day Celebration on 22nd, and Graduation on June 4th. If interested in having our honor guard perform at your enxt event, please contact 1st Sgt. Zinn (zinnje@gmail.com). It is always an honor and privilege to supporting our community

• NJROTC has many activities over the summer! This year we will be sending cadets to Leadership Academy held at Camp Pendleton and Sail Academy held at Coronado Island in San Diego. Cadets who have been chosen qualified through a competitive and rigorous process where they will attend these summer programs and learn, perform, and test their skills to bring back next year for the purpose of advancing leadership and disciplines for our program.

Corona High School ASB hosted the monthly IDSC meeting that is a collaboration of ASB leaders from Centennial, Norco, Santiago, Roosevelt, and JFK. The purpose of ISDC is to share ideas and to promote more activities participation throughout our district. Our incoming board of Alexis, Xochitl, Giselle, and Andy, facilitated the meeting.

On May 1st, we held our end of the year ASB banquet with a Harry Potter theme. We recognized students for their involvement and thanked our seniors for their leadership.

Prom was a huge success and I am proud to say that our students looked absolutely amazing and behaved accordingly! They represented Corona High School extremely well to the point where the staff at the venue commented so positively on our students. I would also like to congratulate our king and queen, Naz Nuri and Kaley Attaman! What a great night for our seniors. Our next big senior event is the Senior Dinner Dance on May 17th at Green River Golf Course. Don;t let your senior miss out o this last hurrah before graduation!

Spring Sports

• Baseball: After clinching our 3rd consecutive Big VIII league title, our Panthers suffered a devastating loss in the first round of the CIF playoffs as we hosted Etiwanda High School on Thursday, May 2nd. We had a very young team with little senior experience, which gives us a promising outlook for next season. I am proud of our young team for securing another league title in what is arguably one of the toughest leagues in the entire state.
  

• Track: Our Panthers competed at league finals on April 25th and 8 of our athletes qualified for CIF prelims! Our league is extremely competitive and in order to advance to CIF, competitors have to place top 3 in their respective event. We have 3 league champs, 3 that made 2nd Team All-League, and 3 that are 3rd Team All-League. CIF prelims will be held at Trabuco Hills High School on May 4th. Congratulations to our athletes!

• Boys Golf: Our golfers have qualified for the Big VIII League Tournament at Indian Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, April 30th. A special shout out to our seniors Sagar Nadasia and Gavin Bray enjoying our last league match together at Goose Creek Golf Course.
• Swim: The swimmers below competed in the Big VIII league finals on April 25th at RCC. We had a lot of our swimmers set personal records. Luke Wolfe, Bradley Manzo, David Quezada, and Drew Heaston qualified in the 200 Medley Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay, and 200 Freestyle Relay for CIF. Drew was the league runner up in the 200 IM and the league champion in the 100 butterfly today at league. These boys competed on Friday, May 3rd at CIF finals with some positive results. Drew Heaston qualified in the 100m Fly and will swim in the finals on May 4th. The 200m Freestyle relay team has also moved onto the finals. Good luck, swimmers!

Calling ALL Corona High School graduates! Please join us for the Annual All-Alumni Reunion held every third Sunday of July in our Fieldhouse (just west of Panther Stadium). This year it happens to fall on July 15th from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Given our history, Corona High School is very fortunate to have multiple generations that can call themselves Panthers. At many parent events I often ask for a show of hands of those that have graduated from Corona and sure enough, there are always several hands that go up. Mark your calendars now for our first-ever districtwide College and Career Fair to be held at Santiago High School on October 16, 2019. This will be a collaborative effort of all high schools in CNUSD to promote college and career preparedness.

Vaping has grown in popularity amongst teens and many don't see a danger in it. Please see below regarding the effects of vaping. Please talk to your student about this issue. There is no profile of one who vapes. At our own school we've seen a variety of students who vape: from struggling students all through high achieving AP students and athletes. Parents, please be realistic about this. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to your student's counselor.
